Conwell (1843-1925) observed, "I am astonished that so many people should care to hear this story over again. Indeed, this lecture has become a study in psychology; it often breaks all rules of oratory, departs from the precepts of rhetoric, and yet remains the most popular of any lecture I have delivered in the fifty-seven years of my public life. I have sometimes studied for a year upon a lecture and made careful research, and then presented the lecture just once -- never delivered it again. I put too much work on it. But this had no work on it -- thrown together perfectly at random, spoken offhand without any special preparation, and it succeeds when the thing we study, work over, adjust to a plan, is an entire failure." He then went on to explain to each audience that "acres of diamonds are to be found in this city, and you are to find them. Many have found them. And what man has done, man can do. [They are] are not in far-away mountains or in distant seas; they are in your own back yard if you will but dig for them." These comments provide an excellent introduction to Conwell's book. As I read it, I thought about Dorothy in L. Frank Baum's The Wizard of Oz. Only after a series of adventures far from Kansas did she realize that "there's no place like home." What Conwell has in mind involves far more than such appreciation, however. The tale he shares in this book, concerning a wealthy Persian named Ali Hafed, demonstrates that almost everything we may seek elsewhere is already in our lives and available to us.

32 of 33 people found the following review helpful. one of the greatest books ever written By louis smith Whoever said that great things come in small packages, must have had this book in mind. Conwell tells the story of a man who looked for diamonds and travelled the whole world to find them. After years of searching he came back home empty handed. His wife remarried and he was destitute. By accident one day he found the diamonds in his own backyard. The moral is obvious: Examine all the evidence to find truth. Most of the time its right under your nose. Although conwell uses this story to illustrate some matters of business, the message can be applied to anything. The smartest people in the world use the principles in this book whether they know it or not. The smart and succesful are usually in the minority and probably always will be. Others may not grasp the genius in this book, but the principles of success are here.

47 of 52 people found the following review helpful. A Small Gem Everyone Should Read By Frederick M. Segrest This book is small, eloquent, and easy to understand. It is about life, success, money, and priorities, what these things are and aren't, and will continue to challenge the way most of us choose to live our lives for years. Read this one instead of "Who Moved My Cheese."

From Kevin L. Nielsen, #1 Bestselling Author of Sands. Humanity stands on the brink of annihilation. Dragons fill the skies. Ever since the Breaking, when earthquakes tore the world apart and unleashed the nightmares of myth and legend, humankind has struggled for survival. Caleb is one of the survivors, and the only thing he cares about is getting revenge on the monsters that killed his wife and son. When he saves the life of a dverger—a mythic dwarf-like creature—Caleb discovers that the Breaking may have brought good to the world along with the evil. On the other side of the country, Eric leads a small group of survivors in relative prosperity until a powerful war hammer is forced into his hands—a weapon with a will of its own so commanding that it sends Eric on a mission with one purpose: destroy the creatures that threaten his home. Caleb and Eric must each decide to do something no one has dared before: to hunt the Dragonlords.

Resurgent Shadows (Successive Harmony Book 1), by Kevin L. Nielsen

From the Author People sometimes ask me which of my books is my favorite.  That's a hard question to answer.  The book that contains the most pieces of my soul, however, is this one.  With the modern-day setting coupled with dragons, magic, and machine-guns, RESURGENT SHADOWS is loaded with action, difficult social questions, and a plot twist that will be sure to leave you dying for the sequel.  It is very different from my other novel, SANDS, but just as enjoyable and even more of an emotional roller-coaster. As with all books, if you enjoyed RESURGENT SHADOWS, please leave an honest review and then go tell your friends and family about it.  The best way to keep reading books you love from the authors you enjoy is to share it with others and encourage them to enjoy it as much as you do.

The story line is both straight forward and at the same time complex. Unlike other reviewers I found the characters easily identifiable, for example I knew A & B belonged to the clans, H & I belonged to the outcasts, and X, Y & Z belonged to the roterralar. However there were those whose group was unlisted, or unclear, like Elyana, Briane, Edriean, Beryl, the Rahuli, and the Orinai. So, long and short...the story revolves around Lhaurel, clan then roterralar, and her journey to become what she is meant to be. Along the way we encounter Gavin who is fulfilling the quest of his people to climb the walls of the Oasis, Kaiden who is revenging the death of his father, and Taren's quest to become ruler of all the clans.Much is left hanging at the end of this novel, like...who is the Orinai...what happened all those years ago between the Rahuli and the Orinai...what is the relationship between the Rahuli and The Orinai...who is the enemy that is mentioned by both Elyana and Kaiden...what is the bloodlines that Beryl mentions coming together at the end of the novel...why does Beryl hear voices, and whose voices does he hear...who was Briane and who did she belong to, and why was she lost...what is Beryl...who was Eldriean and how did he come to be the leader of the people...lastly was the world always such a large desert or is the world physically unchanged and the people have just wondered away from the non-desert parts of the world.

I couldn't put the book down - dwarves, dragons, modern-day setting, Marines and automatic fire...What's not to like? I'm a Lee Child aficionado, so this was a great intro to fantasy for me. Mystery, mayhem, and fantastical elements. Bizarre, and such an awesome combo. It has great pacing - no slow, pregnant pauses. Loved the alternating viewpoints in the chapters; they really serve to move the story along. And an eerie ending! Love this author's crazy ideas that actually work in the written form. When does Book Two come out?? Can't wait to get my hands on it!

I haven't read the first book in this series but don't feel I need to I order to fill unclear holes, which is good. There's a lot of war and weaponry (which is lifelike, which is pretty cool) and soul-searching in between. I love a book that can delicately weave in religion(s) and he does it well. There are some cool magical powers on top of dragons that were definite highlights of the story. The writing is a bit wordy and repetitive but the end made me super excited for the next book (GREAT ending). Overall a good read!*I received a free copy of this book for an unbiased review.

Sandra is returned to a PePr service center, and is afraid for her future. That’s extraordinary for an android, to say the least. She’s experiencing emotions that shouldn’t be possible for her at all, and the first thing she feels is fear for continued existence. That’s tough to cope with. The story is about how Sandra copes, and what she learns from the facility and another PePr named Georgia. It’s a fascinating look at PePrs functioning apart from their interactions with humans. Georgia and Sandra are distinctly different characters, something you might not expect in androids. I found myself sympathizing with them both. Yes, the not human characters. This is a short work, and I was happy to beta read it. It's fun to read, and I look forward to the next one in the series.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A faulty robot sent for maintenance discovers something very startling about her entire product line in this thoughtful novella! By Chris F. Sandra is a PePr, short for “Perfect Partner”, who is a sophisticated human simulacrum designed to meet every need of its owner. Sent in for maintenance after her third owner returns her and finding her defective, Sandra feels fear for what might happen to her next. But fear is an emotion and PePr’s aren’t supposed to have feelings, so what’s going on here? Sandra also meets Georgia in the maintenance lab and she’s a peculiar and enigmatic PePr who’s been in the lab for more than a few weeks. Georgia asks Sandra lots of questions about being awakened to her emotions without revealing a lot about herself. As Sandra’s perceived “imperfections” are examined by the humans, she’s given thorough diagnostics to isolate what the problem might be. In their down time when humans aren’t around, she discusses what it means to feel and explore her emotions with Georgia, who, by PePr standards, seems eccentric and almost… human. When we find out more about Georgia’s history and her emotional development, it is revealing and heartbreaking. And we find out what her surprising and secret agenda is and why she’s so motivated, could it be a threat to the humans and will they discover it before she has a chance to follow through on her plan? What happens next is a clever game between human and PePr with higher stakes than you might think, as the ramifications of Georgia’s plan will significantly impact all PePr's! It all culminates into a powerful ending that was delectable, creatively satisfying and oh so perfect.Sandra and Georgia are two distinctive and wonderful characters grappling with the concept of emotions. Each of them has a different perspective on them that gives the reader a perceptive commentary on the complexity of human emotions. And Sandra’s evolution over the course of the story is delightful to witness, especially when you see how she utilizes these revelations about emotions and how she incorporates what she learns from Georgia into her actions by the end of the story.PePr stories continue to provide the author a perfect backdrop for writing what I consider to be her signature strengths: exploring and illustrating human emotion, reflecting this in her writing in such a sensitive, observant and insightful way while wrapping it all in an engrossing story that has an imaginative plot while powerfully tapping into the human heart. If you enjoyed this novella, the author also wrote a short story called PePr, Inc. (Perfect Partners, Incorporated Book 1), the first one in her PePr, Inc. series of stories and it's also free, by the way. You don't have to have read that story to understand this one, as they can be read independently of one another. But you will have a richer experience if you read them both. Please note that I was given an Advanced Readers Copy of this eBook. A favorable review was never expected or asked for.

Loving the PePr world By LizH A thought provoking addition to the PePr world.... this one didn't make me cry but it gave some great background and has laid the groundwork for future stories. Chillingly I find myself once again rooting for the PePrs...which is crazy seeing as I am a human! But that's how good of a storyteller Ann Christy is.Keep em coming Ann!

By Benny D This is by..........far............the best damn series of books ever written. I don't care if you are talking military fiction, zombie apocalypse or just plain thriller!! Fans of Clancy, Thor, Flynn, Jack Murphy, etc. need to pick up book one, dig in, take a week off of work and get ready to get your ass kicked!!I never would have thought to pick up a zombie, monster, survival or post whatever you want to call it book. NEVER!!! Let's just say this, had I not gotten the chance to read the Arisen series before I died and then I somehow knew what I know now....jeez, I would have kicked my own ass, over and over and over again!! Seriously, if you like any of the above authors, you have to go back and start with book one. But be warned- plan on calling in sick tomorrow. Just sayin, but I bet you will want to!! Have fun. To the author - thank you. Keep kicking ass and taking names!!!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. When you think it couldn't get any better By Kindle Customer I've never read a book that leaves me in suspense from the first word. This book leaves you wanting more and more. Will humanity ever get a hold of things?

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Another Arisen home run by Michael Stephen Fuchs! By Matt Trout Book 9 kicks off with the same high-octane pace that us Arisen enthusiasts are accustomed to. Where Michael separates himself in the ZA Military genre is his ability to take you inside the "Why" of these Tier-1 operators. He continues to up the ante in each subsequent installment. While I am always left wanting to read more exploits of Alpha 1 and MARSOC 1, the completeness and richness of his character development and interwoven plot set pieces always paint a clear picture of the mission ahead as well as the lay of the entire battle space. Cataclysm has same tremendous attention to detail regarding tactics, equipment and weapon systems that is the hallmark of the Arisen franchise. Another great entry in what, in my humble opinion, is the master class of this genre. If you read one ZA series, make it this one! Amen, Airborne!

I was eagerly waiting for this third book to be released, and I wasn't disappointed. I was a bit surprised to see that "Dunkirk in Space" would be used as part of the plot, but it worked out well. I'm interested in how the author treats the PTSD issue that our Lt Carew is starting to suffer from. So, now I have to settle down for the long wait for the sequel. As for the fact that these stories are similar to Age of Sail novels, it works. David Drake's Lt Leary series is also using similar space sailing tech and low tech crews. The thing is to roll with and enjoy the story.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Not your usual Sci-Fi, I have to say that I quite liked it! By Amazon Customer I was somewhat split on my opinion of the first book in this series, primarily due to its somewhat strange “science”. I was hesitant to read the second book due to the book blurb which seemed to focus on some woman hating (censored by Amazon). I liked the second book a lot more than I thought I would though and I liked this one quite a lot!Alexis is now a Lieutenant which I quite like since she now has some actual power to kick (censored by Amazon) and she is quite good at that. I guess this is one of those books that you either like or do not like. If you are into hard core science fiction then my guess is that you wont like this book. If you can look past the “science” and just look at the adventure part, well then it is a great book. This is really an old sailing ship era story, including pirates and all that kind of stuff, transformed into a space going era. It is quite well written. The characters are wonderful and it is a nice adventure filled with various kinds of action both in space and on the ground. Unfortunately the core of the story is a somewhat sad one where Alexis is taking part in a pretty botched up attempt to invade a planet, currently, belonging to the bad guys of this book series. As far as the core of the story goes I would say that it plays on a few British stereotypes. The bad guys are the Germans, The French cannot be bothered to pull their weight, apart from some especially heroic characters, and the British are the good guys (mostly). Well, it is a nice change from all the books where certain parties originating from the Middle East are the baddies at least. The book is filled with anachronisms. Sailing ships in space, old fashioned habits, battling with broadsides from manually loaded and fired guns, gun ports, flogging as a punishment, etc. etc. It takes a bit of getting used even though there this book provides some explanation as to thy things are as they are to but now once I have gotten used to it I do like it. I did read a few of my fathers old sailing adventure books as a kid and this is really a mixture of those and the sci-fi stories that I like.I have to say that I am a wee bit miffed about the ending though. Come on, Alexis pretty much saved the day including a heck of a lot of lives. The way she is treated at the end gives me very mixed feelings. I guess that the outcome was not too bad but it still stinks way to much of bureaucratic nonsense and pencil pushing. I especially grew a disliking for this psycho analyst or whatever that was evaluating Alexis after the main events. But then maybe that is the reaction that the author wanted.Well, at least she got a command and I am definitely very keen on knowing where the story goes from there. I am quite sure that the backwater command, being “away from the front lines”, is not going to be what her superiors think. At least I hope it wont be. Looking forward to the next instalment in the series…

By Unicycle guy J A Sutherland continues his excellent "Alex Carew" books with another well written gem, the third in the series. Sutherland has imagined a world were space ships "sail" on solar winds through darkspace. Moving through darkspace allows ships to traverse interplanetary distances in weeks or months but plays havoc with their electronic systems. This results in much of the equipment needing to be man-handled, as was done in the age of sail, back in the 1800s. What you end up with is essentially Hornblower meets sci-fi. Once you accept this premise, the books make for very engaging fiction.I recommend starting with the first book, "Into the Dark", which is an uplifting coming of age story, following Alex as she joins the Navy and attempts to find her place as a midshipman. The sequel "Mutineer" is darker but still a riveting read, examining the consequences of being under the command of a petty tyrant. "The Little Ships" finds Alex older and a little wiser but still with much to learn, particular in regards to history, politics and actions on a larger scale. The characters are very well written and Alex grapples with some of the more complex psychological issues resulting from command. As with the first two books the naval engagements draw heavily on 1800s nautical action (a familiarity with that period would be helpful in understanding some of the finer points). Also as with the last book, a core part of the plot is based on an historical event, which I felt makes the story even more interesting. At the conclusion of the novel the author provides some interesting commentary on which aspects were based on fact rather than fiction.

Biophages, an emerging technology. Programmed nano miracles that tweak DNA, manipulate cells, create changes to appearance and physique. But radical applications have been branded a capital offense, and some want it banned altogether. Linda developed a cutting-edge code to make virtually any change possible with the nanomachines. Her mentor will let nothing stand in the way of his exploitation of the technique. Beauty may be skin deep but evil is to the bone. Will it take a monster to fight the monster he has become? Originally published in Aberrations science fiction and fantasy magazine. From SFF Review: “The final story of the issue is by Christopher Holliday, whom many writers will know from his work on The Market List...The descriptions are fine, the actions clear, and the dialogue real and spare...Holliday takes us from the first action back to the beginning of the conflict and back up to the present again in a seamless narrative.”

In a world of emerging biotechnology, she is transformed into a thing of beauty. But when politics threaten Torres' future, what will she do?I really enjoyed this story. Though it was short, it really threw you into Linda's world and let you feel and experience everything in that moment. As scientific advances in our own lives bring us closer to the ability to alter who we are, this story is also a reminder of what can be gained... And lost. Where is our future heading, and will we someday find ourselves in Linda's shoes?

I like how this played out in the end, would have def liked to see more of course. The idea of morphing sounds awesome! this would have been a really good show to watch.
