This trio of humorous holiday tales will delight Frog and Friends fans By Deb Frog and his friends were preparing for Thanksgiving, one of their favorite holidays. “It’s a time of love. And sharing,” Frog explained to all of them. They were using a stump as a table and they even “thanked the tree’s roots for letting them use it.” They began to place food on the stump as everyone began to gather ‘round. There’s was a squirrel sitting on a stone, a pair of robins, peered down from a branch, a possum leaned forward to offer up her share, and even crickets came to the celebration. Very hungry, extra-super-hungry Hippo showed up late with a napkin already tucked under his chin. “I had Thanksgiving dinner at Little Zoo,” he explained, but was ready for more! There was plenty more, even for hungry Hippo, and the table was set with many different foods. There were “flies, mealworms, caterpillars, ants,” and even “kale and wild mushroom salad with watercress dressing.” Mmmmmmm! There was something for everyone and everyone was welcome, even little Hedgie the hedgehog. All was well until Hedgie spotted Hippo. Frog’s eyes grew wide and those quills went high and Hedgie curled up into “a spiky ball.” Everyone noticed Hedgie and soon there would be trouble, or so they thought. “Little Possums,” Possum cried out, “Come to Mama. Do not go near the hedgehog!” This was supposed to be the best Thanksgiving ever, but what could frog do with everyone running away? This trio of humorous holiday tales will delight Frog and Friends fans. Naturally Frog had to reassure everyone that Hedgie was quite harmless while all the while reassuring Hedgie that no one would hurt him. These short tales are a great addition to holiday books, especially with the addition of a New Year’s Eve tale. There are an abundance of Thanksgiving and Christmas tales, but not as many to start off a new year. Newly independent and confident readers can tackle this book alone or with a minimum of assistance with more difficult words such as “somersaults.” The artwork, combined with the exciting, humorous tales with Frog and his friends, has high appeal that young readers are definitely drawn to.Grades 1 to 2FROG AND FRIENDS (I Am A Reader):Frog and FriendsFrog and Friends: Party at the PondFrog and Friends: The Best Summer EverFrog and Friends: Frog’s Flying AdventureFrog and Friends: Outdoor SurprisesFrog and Friends: Frog Saves the DayFrog and Friends: Frog’s Lucky DayFrog and Friends: Celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s EveGrades 1 - 2This book courtesy of the publisher.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good for Legoland Florida Info By Jonathan P Drews One of the few, maybe the only Florida guide book with anything on Legoland Florida, which is why we bought it. There were only 2 1/2 pages on Legoland, but it was just enough to help us narrow down our ride choices and make sure we didn't miss the "signature" Granny Fries there. The book could use an index, though.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. The Best By Amazon Customer Most of the guidebooks out there are way too big and full of overhwelming information that will make you panic as you start planning your trip. This book was the perfect size and had just enough information to make planning a breeze. It's the only book to trust when starting your Orlando plans!

Hollander's Version By The Perpetual Student I know there are countless versions of Dante's epic, however, Hollander does the best job in not only translation, but also in immersing the reader into Dante's world.Hollander gives the reader the original Italian novel on one side, with a well developed English translation on the right. Hollander also has a passionate and thorough introduction with helpful notes all over the text.Hollander's version is also the best version I've come across, since it not only has the original Italian printed right next to it, and not only do the notes help the reader follow the story, but he also sets the type so that it mirror's Dante's.Now I know that this edition might be a bit pricey, but if you can afford it, buy it. I own four versions of Dante's Devine Comedy and I can't tell you how I wish I would have had someone point me to Hollanders translation in the beginning. I've also asked other professors who are in the field of English Literature and Italian and they all seem to agree that Hollander is the best so far.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. italian dante, english dante, academic dante, in beautiful print By drollere the third installment of the hollander/hollander translation of dante was published last fall (2008), and it represents the single edition of this great poem to have in english.for decades i have been a dante enthusiast who felt inconvenienced by the choice between the bilingual but unaligned sinclair or singleton prose editions on one hand and the many ambitious and admirable but not entirely trustworthy english poetic editions on the other. i have never felt satisfied with either solution and wearied of trying to match prose to verse or wondering which brilliancies in the english verses were also in the italian.the hollanders' edition resolves every complaint. the english and italian march side by side and a glance from one to the other can answer any doubts about the english or any difficulty with the italian. the poem can be read straight through, or consulted with the notes for a deeper understanding.the "critical apparatus" -- in the form of outlines (really cribs) and endnotes to each canto, a name index, a character/topic index and bibliography in each of the three volumes -- is thoughtful, ample and up to date, providing both an anatomization of the poetic content and connections and a thorough introduction to academic opinion and exegesis. (i should mention that the printed version is complementary to the princeton dante project web site, where maps, images, audio recordings in both english and italian and a searchable library of dante's works are available.)some reservations about the accuracy of the translation have been expressed in other reviews, but my judgment is that this is a superior text by the standards of any bilingual edition of any text available in comparative literature. the translation is not rigorous verse but more accurately broken prose, apparently with an ear to singleton's important 20th century edition. within the decision to keep the translation as compact as practicable by striving for word for word equivalences, points where the word choices seem awkward are often informed by an interpretive subtext, or simple english sense, that a literal translation would obscure. english cannot easily imitate both the languorous vowel music and alternately compacted, looping or crystalline italian syntax, much less the twists of late medieval idiom and turns of allusion and symbol, but in my judgment the translation provides a praiseworthy level of fidelity. where it fails, it fails clearly.finally, in the hardbound editions at least, these are splendidly sturdy, handsome volumes; the printing is crisp, the paper is warm and substantial, the binding and boards are rock solid; the layout is airy, with plenty of room for notes and mark ups. this is a study edition better than any i have seen, a high minded publisher investment in a three volume set that is unlikely to become a bestseller, but is a book the translators and editors can see as a high point of their careers.a must have for every literate and scholarly home library.

Austin, Lost in America: A Geography Adventure, by Jef Czekaj

From School Library Journal K-Gr 3—Austin, a small brown-and-white dog, breaks out of the pet store and begins a journey across the U.S., determined to find a real home. He starts in the Northeast and travels across three more broad regions (South, West, and Midwest) before arriving home. Along the way, smart readers will recognize clues predicting his final destination. In addition to the narration of Austin's journey, facts are presented for each of the 50 states. Czekaj's picture book is full of colorful, energetic images produced in his typical witty style, with laugh-out-loud graphic novel-style scenes from start to finish. A map of the states and capitals is color-coded by region, showing the hero's tangled route across the country. This tour of America provides a fresh and funny view, offering less details than Dan Yaccarino's Go, Go America (Scholastic, 2008), but more than Robert Neubecker's Wow! America (Hyperion, 2006). VERDICT Austin's regional U.S. geography adventure will entertain and inform early readers. A recommended purchase.—Gaye Hinchliff, King County Library System, WA

Having recently completed the Flat Stanley Project they really enjoyed learning a little more about the states that make up our country. It's funny and well illustrated. May be better suited for Kindergarden and 1st grade, but still educational for all.

With a dinnertime mystery and 5 hungry suspects, Charlie Piechart makes fractions fun.

Charlie Piechart has a piechart for a belly, and it’s a belly that’s perfect for showing fractions. In his first mystery, perfect for little math enthusiasts, it’s pizza night at the Piecharts’ house.

How about veggies on top? “NO VEGGIES!” yell 4/6 of the pizza eaters. No one wants anchovies, either. They like Charlie’s idea best: pepperoni.

But with 6 pizza eaters, 3 sizes of pizza on the delivery menu, and 2 slices allotted for each person, it is no surprise when there’s a mystery! A scream from Charlie’s sisters reveals the issue: 1 out of 12 slices has gone missing. So who did it? Charlie counts the suspects and questions each one (except Mom!). But could he be forgetting someone?

This colorful, hysterical mystery adventure is perfect for both reluctant and enthusiastic math learners. Great for fans of G Is for Googol, Sir Cumference and the First Round Table, and Math Curse.

Charlie Piechart and the Case of the Missing Pizza Slice, by Marilyn Sadler, Eric Comstock

From School Library Journal K-Gr 2—There are worse ways to ingest the study of fractions than by reading a book about pizza, which must have been the thinking behind this extremely slight mystery. Fractions are interjected into the text at every opportunity, as when Charlie invites ¼ of his friends for dinner, which must be shared with his five family members. The small crisis when 1/12 of the pie goes missing is resolved when Charlie's improbably magnanimous parents content themselves with 1 ½ slices apiece. The retro-spectrum digital illustrations are serviceable, just like the math lesson. VERDICT Less peppy than pepperoni.—Miriam Lang Budin, Chappaqua Library, NY

Review A lighthearted tone and newcomer Comstock’s playful graphics, which have a weathered, retro quality, make the lesson go down as easy as pie. (Publishers Weekly)Debut illustrator Comstock’s digital artwork is a retro-modern throwback. Kids will have fun following Charlie as he solves the mystery and reinforce their fraction skills along the way. (Kirkus Reviews)

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fun with fractions By D. Jennings Cute, clever story which shows children how to identify fractions...Charlie and his family and his friend ("Charlie had 4 friends: Lewis, Henry, Scotty and Barry. Lewis was 1/4 of Charlie's friends...") are having pizza for dinner. ("Yuck, no veggies," yelled 4/6 of the pizza eaters.) But one slice goes missing and Charlie tries to solve the mystery. ("Dad was 1/5 of his suspects.") A good way for gradeschoolers to gain an understanding of how one might use fractions, and enough story here so that the little ones who don't quite get fractions will still like the book.Humorous little interjections from the author tip a wink to the parents and the older kids: "Author's note: Anchovies are tiny little fish, and why anyone would want them on their pizza is a mystery that may never be solved." And of course, there is ****SPOILER ALERT*****stop reading if you don't want to know the ending.....it's the giveaway, the tell, the final clue.......the all-important fart joke which is vital to the plot. Farts are funny for all ages.I'm not wild abut the retro-1950s illustrations, partly because it's a bandwagon everyone seems to be jumping on lately. Remember a few years back when suddenly there were scores of illustrations in the style of The Wild Thornberrys, all noodly limbs and tiny eyes and grommet lips with too many teeth? Now it's everyone creating characters that look like Tom Terrific. We've come across a dozen just in this week's trip to the library. In the back of the book are a couple of pages showing a few more examples of fractions and a pizza "pie chart" with the fractions used shown all on one page. Handy, especially if you're using this book in a classroom.Check out the video clip above to get a good sense of what the book is like.

Such a fun and creative way to think about fractions and absolutely full of personality (the illustrations are fabulous and the quirky little details like the tiny bugs in the couch are adorable) Our child is three months old, so doesn't quite get the fractions...or words, but he can't get enough of the pictures. Charlie was actually the first image our little boy really loved to look at. We regularly read the book to him and just watch our boy's eyes scan Charlie's face and smile. When we planned our nursery, we just had to fill it with the things we love, because we obviously hadn't met this little person yet to be born. It's been so much fun to watch our boy's eyes light up to Eric's work just like ours do.
