1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A classic travel adventure for young girls By F. Orion Pozo With the fabulous success of his Wizard of Oz books, L. Frank Baum finally found himself financially well off. He and his wife Maud used their new wealth to take a trip overseas. On 7 April 1906 they were witnesses to a major eruption of Vesuvius. This experience becomes the background for Aunt Jane's Nieces Abroad which takes the characters to this same event and makes the novel interesting reading. Baum portrays the three young girls and their Uncle John as nationalistic Americans, extremely proud of their culture and values, who are always making comparisons with how much worse Europeans are in all they say and do. This adds humor to the story which is basically an adventure tale that centers around the mysterious men they meet in their travels. Filled with detail from Baum's own travels, the book ends up being a cautionary tale for Americans traveling abroad.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. a pleasant mystery/detective book with a happy ending By F. Orion Pozo Aunt Jane's Nieces at Millville by L. Frank Baum writing as Edith Van Dyne is the third book in a series written for young girls. It was originally published in 1908. The three nieces are Louise Merrick, Elizabeth De Graf, and Patsy Doyle and in this book they go to a fictional upstate New York town called Millville for the summer with their rich uncle John who has gotten a farmhouse there as payment for a bad debt. Much of the novel deals with the vast cultural differences between the small town farmers of the town and the rich "nabobs" living in the summer house. Soon after moving in the three young women sense a mystery in the sudden death of the previous owner of the house, a seaman named Captain Wegg, and the disappearance of his fortune. Suspecting murder and theft, each of the nieces has her own theory as to what happened and who may be guilty. The plot develops nicely providing a pleasant mystery/detective book with a happy ending.

Excerpt from Croatian Tales of Long AgoOnce upon a time very long ago there lived an old man in a glade in the midst of an ancient forest. His name was Witting, and he lived there with his three grandsons. Now this old man was all alone in the world save for these three grandsons, and he had been father and mother to them from the time when they were quite little. But now they were full-grown lads, so tall that they came up to their grandfather's shoulder, and even taller. Their names were Bluster, Careful and Quest.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. An acclaimed journalist examines how games can help us learn, create, and innovate in any kind of business. If you’ve ever found yourself engrossed in Angry Birds, Call of Duty, or a plain old crossword puzzle when you should have been doing something more productive, you know how easily games hold our attention. Hardcore gamers have spent the equivalent of 5.93 million years playing World of Warcraft while the world collectively devotes about 5 million hours per day to Angry Birds. A colossal waste of time? Perhaps. But what if we could tap into all the energy, engagement, and brainpower that people are already expending and use it for more creative and valuable pursuits?Harnessing the power of games sounds like a New-Age fantasy, or at least a fad that’s only for hip start-ups run by millennials in Silicon Valley. But according to Adam L. Penenberg, the use of smart game design in the workplace and beyond is taking hold in every sector of the economy, and the companies that apply it are witnessing unprecedented results. “Gamification” isn’t just for consumers chasing reward points anymore. It’s transforming, well, just about everything.Penenberg explores how, by understanding the way successful games are designed, we can apply them to become more efficient, come up with new ideas, and achieve even the most daunting goals. He shows how game mechanics are being applied to make employees happier and more motivated, improve worker safety, create better products, and improve customer service. For example, Microsoft has transformed an essential but mind-numbing task—debugging software—into a game by having employees compete and collaborate to find more glitches in less time. Meanwhile, Local Motors, an independent automaker based in Arizona, crowdsources designs from car enthusiasts all over the world by having them compete for money and recognition within the community. As a result, the company was able to bring a cutting-edge vehicle to market in less time and at far less cost than the Big Three automakers. These are just two examples of companies that have tapped the characteristics that make games so addictive and satisfying. Penenberg also takes us inside organizations that have introduced play at work to train surgeons, aid in physical therapy, translate the Internet, solve vexing scientific riddles, and digitize books from the nineteenth century. Drawing on the latest brain science as well as his firsthand reporting from these cutting-edge companies, Penenberg offers a powerful solution for businesses and organizations of all stripes and sizes.

Play at Work: How Games Inspire Breakthrough Thinking, by Adam L. Penenberg

From Booklist Games and game design are all around us, from crossword puzzles to computer games to Wii and Xbox. But games permeate our lives in more subtle forms, too, like Powerball lotteries, eBay, social media sites, and even the mileage and rewards points that we win. Games provide feedback loops that stimulate dopamine, rewarding the brain’s pleasure center, but playing games can also improve our reaction time, ability to multitask, and creativity levels. Investigative journalist Penenberg examines how games can be used to modify behavior, train surgeons and military personnel, aid physical rehabilitation, transform boring repetitive tasks into fun, and even harness the computing power of human intelligence across the globe to digitize old books and translate the entire Internet into other languages. Learn how cutting-edge companies are embracing game integration to make workers more satisfied, better trained, and focused on their jobs. Penenberg’s work has appeared in the New York Times, Forbes, Wired, Playboy, and Mother Jones. He may be best known for unmasking Stephen Glass of the New Republic for journalism fabrication in 1998 and is currently a journalism professor at New York University. --David Siegfried

Review “Adam Penenberg’s excellent new book persuasively demonstrates the power of gaming to motivate work. Filled with great stories of companies who have made the leap into playful productivity, it should be useful and inspirational for anyone looking at how to leverage the spirit of competition.”—DOUGLAS RUSHKOFF, AUTHOR OF PRESENT SHOCK

“In this great and often funny book Penenberg shows how everyone from entrepreneurs to scientists is using gamification to create the future today. Don’t be left behind. Read this book to learn how the rules of business and life are changing.”—GABE ZICHERMANN, CEO OF GAMIFICATION CO.

“It’s happening all around us, but if you’re not paying attention you may miss it. Adam Penenberg provides an insightful guide into how gamification is infiltrating the marketplace and, more important, how it can be leveraged to make experiences more immersive and addictive. Read it, and prepare to see your everyday experiences through new eyes.”—TODD HENRY, AUTHOR OF DIE EMPTY AND THE ACCIDENTAL CREATIVE

“From Tom Sawyer’s fence-painting scheme to Angry Birds, games have a unique knack for tapping the heart of engagement. Adam Penenberg takes you well beyond Zynga and through the countless, inventive ways games can be designed to bring out our best thinking. This is a fascinating and entertaining exploration of that most basic of human proclivities: play.”—DANIEL H. PINK, AUTHOR OF TO SELL IS HUMAN AND DRIVE

“Gamification is a hot topic but few truly understand it. Engaging and filled with incredible stories, Play at Work explains how games can make us more efficient and creative. Drawing on copious research and interviews with an array of game designers, scientists, mathematicians, entrepreneurs, inventors, and government officials, Penenberg offers a new perspective on how to make play work for you.”—ERIC RIES, AUTHOR OF THE LEAN STARTUP

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Brilliant and Enjoyable By Becky Jewell This book contributes a solid argument to the vision of games as positive forces. The writing style is excellent. When Penenberg asks 'what is a game', he spares us pages of rumination by quipping 'This reminds me of college dorm room debates about how you define art.' When I read this sentence I was so happy. Finally, an author on games who can cut through the fogs of definition and bring on the real research, real facts, and real effects on real people. This book has a vision. No time wasted. The other core value of this book is that Penenberg works to cover all industries. One chapter investigates how games or simulations aid surgeons in their training. Another chapter details a successful game initiative from DARPA. One interesting note that Penenberg unpacks is that games as a form of learning have been around forever, but only lately have scientists begun to study these processes and prove them as effective, and only lately have smart businesses deployed game models as task platforms for their workers. The book avoids and even actively critiques the 'put a badge on it' mechanics of the gamification fad, and it seeks an answer behind the process of having fun. Why does time fly when we have fun? Why is Angry Birds so addicting? The title is doubly fitting, as Penenberg discusses how play can affect the workplace, and how 'play' itself works and operates.

I would avoid at all costs By Tim The author is a journalist and this book is about him, and his experiences with gamification. I got this book to hopefully use for research for a paper i'm writing, but this book contains virtually no useful information. I would avoid at all costs. Not only does it contain no useful information, it is difficult to read because of the tone. If you want to learn about Adam L Penenberg's feelings, attitudes, and observations get this book, if you want to learn about gamification avoid.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Inspired to try this in my workplace ... By Christopher Gordon In doing research on gamification, this book provided a unique perspective from an expert who has put ideas into action. Adam provides several fascinating stories from a variety of industries that reinforce it can be done across any business model if you make the effort and design a gamified system that is well designed to keep others engaged and enthused, so that it is challenging and fun. I now feel challenged to figure out a gaming model that can be applied in my area of expertise to where I can disrupt the IT world using gamification. Although this was a fun read, I was hoping to get advice on how to create your own gamification model and what are some useful techniques to try...hopefully that will be covered in a part 2 book!

Review "This rhyming super-stinker just cries out to be read aloud... Ada Grey's scatological scenes induced howls of delighted laughter from my audience of 5s to 10s, several of whom wanted to paw over the pages for themselves." - Jill R Bennett "This brilliantly anarchic picture story really romps along with its lively illustrations... and pages of rollicking rhyme and rib-tickling escapades. The ideal book to read aloud and get the kids laughing... and joining in the fun." - Lancashire Evening Post "Packed with humour, romping rhyme and deliciously cheeky wordplay, Poo in the Zoo is a joy to read aloud to children." - Babyworld "Poo in the Zoo is hilariously funny, and with a rhyming text, you will enjoy reading this out loud to little ones with its cheeky word play. Ada Grey's illustrations are bold, with cute fun characters and she has managed to illustrate all of the different types of poo rather tastefully!" - Bookworm Baby "A marvellous story which will have young ones in fits of laughter all the way. Ada Grey's hilarious illustrations are the perfect match." - Parents in Touch "It's very funny, and utterly delightful for giggly toddlers who love a good poo story ... This is just the sort of fun picture book that goes down a treat at playgroups and nurseries, and is wonderful for a rainy afternoon's story time." The Book Bag Blog's Top 10 Picture Books of 2015 "Rhyming text, detailed illustrations and plenty of toilet humour combine to create a silly tale which is sure to appeal to young children, and could be particularly useful when potty training." - Booktrust

When he's not working, Steve enjoys films, television, gardening and walking in the countryside. Ada spent several years working for design companies before deciding that she preferred doodling. She lives in Brighton with her daughter and cat, Ming the Merciless. She collects picture books, draws in her studio (which is very messy) and loves cheese and spaghetti, especially together.

Fun for readers of all ages By Nayu This is an absolutely hilarious read which will appeal to younger readers because there is poo everywhere in the brightly coloured pages. Literally. I liked how the zoo keeper, who I expected would be older looks rather young, making it easier for the readership the book is aimed at to pretend they are taking care of the zoo.The twist at the end was unexpected and made me smile (although I did wonder how long it would be before the solution to cleaning all the poo would go wrong). Readers are introduced to a variety of animals, and on the inside pages there's different types of poo in jars (various shapes and sizes) which is interesting to see and teaches readers animals are not all the same. There are some extinct animals' poo thrown into the mix too.I received a copy from the publisher for an honest review on my blog Nayu's Reading Corner http://nayusreadingcorner.blogspot.co.uk/2015/08/poo-in-zoo-by-steve-smallman-and-ada.html

By Delphina I am a huge Dannika dark fan and love the world she has created, so when I saw this novella, I knew I had to read it. Of the many things I love about this story, one of the things I love the most is that it is a story in and of itself and you do not need to have reads her Impulse series to enjoy it. Why do I love that? Because it gives people an opportunity to dive into her world without the feeling that they are committing to a series. Mind you, you will probably want to read the series after reading this novella. There is some slight overlap in that one of the characters has a sibling in the Mageri series, but that will not cause any confusion when reading this story.I do not know how to say what I want to say without giving too much away, so pardon my vagueness with this next bit. I think the way they initially communicate and get to know each other is what makes the story as powerful as it it. The situation is all kinds of messed up and yet these two people find each other and the possibility of happiness. Something each had given up on in the past. The ending is brilliant. Not because it solves some big mystery, but because it is more realistic than I was afraid it would be and it leaves many doors open for the characters while at the same time being a very satisfying ending. I will admit that I hope we see these characters entering into the Impulse universe, but if they do not, I feel like I know enough. This is not a YA read. It is for the 18 plus crowd. It is not graphic, but the content, especially how they meet, is not for younger readers. If you love this novella, please give her Mageri series a go. You will not be disappointed.I was given a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

It's not very long and doesn't involve any of our usual characters, except in a round about way.Kane is the older brother to Sunny whom we've seen in the other books. Sunny is human but Kane was not born into that family and he's a Sensor. A Sensor is another type of Breed that can manipulate emotion, not always in a negative way, in many different ways. He's highly sensitive though and because he never knew what he was until later in life, he never learned how to desensitize himself. Hence he's spent most of his life staying as far away as possible from touch. In a bizarre turn of events he meets Caroline. She is also a Sensor but according to the Breed she's "defective" because she can receive emotions but can't transmit them back. This is a sweet and fun story filled with a lot of laughter and love!

‘Has everyone already told you we’re doomed?’ ‘I haven’t spoken to everyone.’ The Law says that every officer cadet has an equal chance to become an officer. That’s the Law. Everyone else says the Law doesn’t apply in intergalactic space. The graduation rate is one in six. Failed officer cadets are trapped in a star drive forever, or worse, executed. The fastest star drives blur the boundary between the living and the dead and give the Emperor power over the afterlife of his subjects. When the Empire executes a failed officer cadet, death is only the beginning. The cruelty of the Empire is surpassed only by the cruelty of its enemies, and training missions are always against real enemies. ____________________________________________________________________ If you want to read a story about their enemies, The Moons of Nano is written from their perspective. ____________________________________________________________________ I realize ‘greatest coming-of-age space adventure’ is a bold claim. To me, a person comes of age when she makes her own decision independent of what anyone else has advised. Making her own decision doesn’t necessarily mean making the right one. This is an eyewitness account of actual events that occurred during the intergalactic war between the Old Empire and the Royal Empire almost five million years ago and seven billion light years away. The cover photo is a picture of nearby stars reflected upon the surface of the Southern Ocean of Thæose located near the center of Galaxy Xedex.

The Officer Cadet: The Greatest Coming- of-Age Space Adventure Ever Told By DareAT After reading for just a few minutes, I had to get up and get a quilt. The description of Dess being cold was so authentic I was chilled. I enjoyed the ups and downs of the mental maturing of Dess. Really excellent battle scenes: fear, death, rebirth. Had to remind myself that this was a child fighting for her life! Did get lost sometimes due to this being a "new" universe and philosophy. Now I want a wristband!! The Epilogue: Wow...next book please.

Female protagonists, space battles, coming of age By Claire P Strong young female protagonists involved in space battles, planetary adventures, first love... I'm no longer young but found myself swept up in the story. This is apparently a first novel. I will be watching for the next ones and seeing how the author matures in writing.
