From School Library Journal

K-Gr 2-Ostensibly based on a Sufi legend, this story concerns a boy whose parents are instructed not to name him when he is born. A wise man tells them, "This is a very, very important boy-and I am going to give him something marvelous one day, but I will have to give him his name first." After some years, the youngster goes with his friend Anwar to see the wise man, with the hope that he can exchange an unwanted dream for a name. The wise man selects the name Husni out of a magic box and gives it to the boy, who then puts his unwanted dream in another box. Then the two friends each take a turn choosing from a third box, which is full of wonderful dreams. "And after that, forever and ever, Husni had a name-and the two boys-always had wonderful dreams." End of story. The point of this narrative is, at best, elusive. What is so important about the nameless boy? What are readers to make of the boxes of names and dreams? The lively and colorful artwork evokes the Middle Eastern setting, but doesn't help to answer these questions. Perhaps an extensive study of Sufism would enhance readers' understanding, but it is doubtful that this book on its own will make much sense to children or the adults who read it to them.-Miriam Lang Budin, Chappaqua Public Library, NY

From Booklist Ages 4-7. Nameless has grown up, well . . . nameless, owing to a wise man's visit on the day of his birth. He asks his friend Anwar for a name, but Anwar only has one name, and he can't afford to give it away. When the boys visit the wise man, he opens a magic box full of names, and one, "Husni," creeps into the nameless boy's ears. Anwar gets a gift, too: the wise man opens a box full of dreams, which enter both boys' ears giving them sweet dreams. The book is based on a great Islamic mystic's birth story, but the religious significance is set aside in favor of a broader message of peace and happiness. Unfortunately, the story fails to inform children why Husni remained Nameless for so long, and the illustrations lack the energy of Shah's telling. Even so, this is a satisfying bedtime story that will encourage pleasant dreams to drift into little ears. John GreenCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

This is the book she asks for it every night - which makes her dad and me happy because we love reading it. Who knows why, but I do know that the books and stories I loved most as a kid were just like this one - they invoked a sense of magic and fulfillment just beyond my everyday world that I knew in my heart of hearts I could aspire to. What more could we ask for in a book for our kids?

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. Childrens books by Idries Shah build mental agility By A Customer Tragedies like Columbine are a wake-up call. It's clear that we need to provide our kids - especially boys - with tools to counter the violence and knee-jerk aggression ubiquitous in popular culture. These children's stories by Idries Shah are just this kind of tool. They're not preachy. They don't offer simplistic lessons or moral platitudes. They're more like exercises for "mental muscle groups" grossly underdeveloped in this culture: A strong sense of one's own value. Empathy. Flexibility in thinking and responding. Appreciating that not everyone is the same, not every outcome is predictable. Seeing that there are more than two sides to a situation. A sense that patience and perseverance can pay off, sometimes in unexpected ways. Not demanding easy answers. A sense that things are not always as they seem, that the viewpoint of "experts" - or even the whole community - is not always right. The experience of seeing something that even adults don't see, of creating clever solutions. The sense that taking positive action is possible and rewarding-even when one has to buck the tide. That help can come from where and when we least expect it. The sense that life has interesting "loose ends" for us to reflect on. And so much more. At least one of these books should be on every child's book shelf.

By Midwest Book Review In The Boy Without A Name, a young boy seeks and eventually finds his own name and is able to discard an old dream for a new and wonderful one. Highly recommended for personal, school and community library picturebook collections, The Boy Without A Name is an entertaining and thoughtful Sufi folktale which is wonderfully recounted by Idries Shah and marvelously illustrated with watercolor paintings by Mona Caron.

I can’t tell you what a difference it made. It’s really straightforward, well-organized and light, so I could slip it in my purse and carry it with me. At the front is a section of “Best” experiences, which really helped me figure out what would fit best with my interests. This was followed by a really helpful section of suggested itineraries which I ended up building my vacation around. The book itineraries made seeing lots of things actually doable—and fun, instead of stressful. They divided the city up by area, so I wasn’t running around to see things, I was able to do what I wanted in a much more logical fashion and I even had time to relax. Speaking of relaxing: I enjoyed the fact that the nightlife section gave great advice for people who want to go out and explore the city after dark but aren’t, well, kids anymore. There were great suggestions for sophisticated jazz bars, tips on how to get inexpensive seats to Broadway shows and even a really friendly bar right near our hotel, that I never would have found on my own (it was a speakeasy, so a bit hidden and mysterious) where we had a nightcap most every night. I can’t recommend this guide highly enough.

This is a book basically of advise from a knowledgeable New York City insider friend -- with recommendations and whats new and warnings on what to avoid. It's light enough to carry with you, which is always a bonus. and it also has news on redone attractions that you might not have heard about -- the expanded Cooper Dewitt, the One World Observatory for example. Nice tips on getting affordable theater tickets Without Waiting Online, as well as great maps (some pull-outs which I love) and subway directions to every place you might go. Excellent value from the best guide around.

While it doesn't have all the pretty pictures of other guides, it does give information needed to make your stops worth the time and wait. It tells you what to see, what to skip, when to arrive early or better times to be there. Lots of helpful information and sometimes even a bit of history is given about places so you know more going in before you get there. Very well done guide and very helpful to us on our trip.

As a former CMO of a Fortune 500 company and a current Marketing consultant I have worked hard to triangulate the challenges of all this “big data”, the attitudinal research, the social media data streams, and the distracted and overloaded consumer. What Zain Raj does in this book is to perfectly articulate these challenges faced by today’s companies and then reframes the problem to drive toward the solution. I was struck by his observation of the angst we all feel at the rapidly evolving and expanding universe of options clamoring for our limited time and media dollars. As he articulates, in his easy to read style, all of these new channels and ways of reaching out to consumers are important and worth your attention only if you clearly understand, in personal detail, your best customers.Starting with the simple idea that we all need to take a breath and get back to the most fundamental and basic job of Marketing…. Know your best customers intimately, know what they want, need, and expect from your company, and then talk to them clearly, consistently, and honestly about how you understand them and will meet their needs. From this powerful starting point, Zain then reveals the proven approach on how to effectively leverage big data, research, and make decisions on the thousands of channel choices to engage with your customer. What I also found incredibly useful is to be reminded we are all suffering from a proliferation of information but lacking in insights. To borrow from the Ancient Mariner, “Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink.” Zain reminds us that the real secret to success is to find the true insights that will satisfy our customers. Because, it is insights that drive sales to the cash register and it is insights that enable you to create more customers.Unfortunately, most of us get lost following data down the rabbit hole and finding more and more data at every twist and turn…and yet never really finding a true business building insight. I have seen this happen too many times to count----companies invest into all this data and research and then declare they have answers. Only to find those answers are generic and don't actually deliver significant sales. There is a profound difference between insights and knowledge. Importantly, Zain also discusses the intersection of behavioral data and attitudinal data (what we do versus what we say). His discussion on how to manage this dichotomy to drive insights is brilliant and, for me, was eye opening and incredibly useful. As pointed out in this wonderful book, the problem isn’t the data, the problem, instead, is not starting out with the right question. Only by starting with the right question can we then focus on the data to deliver the answer to that question. Finally, I was struck by the concept unveiled in this book about the type of Marketer that is required in today's world. I agree wholeheartedly with Zain's argument that today's Marketing challenges requires a totally different type of Marketer than the kind of Marketer that was successful in the past. The Marketing Decathlete concept outlined in this book is the best description I've ever heard on what is needed to be successful in today's challenging and multi-faceted world.Whether you are a CMO, just starting your career, or simply are looking for a powerful roadmap on how to help your company create more customers, you should read this book.

And this is important to note - this is also incredible information for established companies and brands to learn as well.Zain Raj has written a clear guide on how to thrive in this new age of marketing, and how to stand out in an overcrowded market. Real solid tips and advice, easy to digest.

Although I expected it to be a continuation of Brand Sense, this book looks into the future and is filled with Raj’s signature wry humor. What’s Raj is arguing is an overhaul of a system that needs that focuses on doubling down on what works, paying attention to the 80-20 rules, and cultivating an environment for insights.Raj’s argument is so simple it’s almost problematic: Find out what the customer’s want and give it to them. The problem that companies seem to be having is they don’t *know* what they want. They want to know what actions bring results. They want to know what their customers really want … something that isn’t so simple as just digging through data.I’m reminded of the story of Swiffer in “Imagine: How Creativity Works.” The team in that story faced the problem of how to change mopping and dusting … and they’re incite came after looking at the same data, same boring videos for months on end -- and they realized what the customer really wanted. And they acted on it. It’s those insights that bring a new product or sales pitch to life. And like Zain who focuses on interdisciplinary responses, he encourages marketers to be a “Marketing Decathlete,”marrying the best of the old marketing concepts with the future of the brand.Recommended if you’ve enjoyed: From Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...and Others Don't; Imagine: How Creativity Works; and Material Change: Design Thinking in the Social Entrepreneurship Movement; Solving Problems with Design Thinking: 10 Stories of What Worked

IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS 'DIVERGENT' BUT EVEN BETTER IN MANY WAYS By Robert Steven Thomas I strongly urge potential readers to NOT "start off" with this excellent novel unless you have first read the three books in what formed the "original" trilogy (Aurora Rising) of this continuing series. While the original trilogy began a bit slow in Volume -1 ... taking several chapters to establish the main characters and extensive main plot, it steadily and unerringly picked up the pace through the conclusion of Volume -3. This the 4th volume in the series also contains solid action, original thinking and excellent creativity - plus some GREAT philosophy involving 'the concept of god, consciousness and sentience.' My main reason for not rating this 4th book 5-Star is that it ended very abruptly, giving fresh meaning to the expression "cliff-hanger" and leaving we readers almost mid-sentence, where we will all remain until the 5th book in the series is in print. Unfortunately Volume 5 isn't even available yet to pre-order at the date of this review ... OR I WOULD HAVE ORDERED IT !!!

Builds perfectly off the first trilogy By T Hernandez Sidespace was a thrilling and engaging story that introduces us to the new trilogy in the Aurora Rhapsody saga. I enjoyed the first trilogy, but this is easily my favorite of the four books so far and I am eager to see where the rest of the Aurora Renegades trilogy will take us. The story introduces us to new conflicts that arise naturally from the events of the Aurora Rising trilogy. Alex and Caleb set off to explore the pocket universes beyond the alien Metigen portal. Meanwhile, the merging of humans and artificial intelligence to create prevos leads to some complicated challenges for the other characters. I appreciated how well the story flowed from events in the previous books while still remaining new and interesting and unpredictable.Another thing I loved about Sidepsace was that it seemed to have to a more narrowed focus on the most important characters in the story without shifting unnecessarily to characters who seemed unimportant, which has been one of my qualms about earlier books. It made the story much more enjoyable for me and kept things moving right along. The pacing was excellent. It's a pretty long book but it definitely doesn't feel that way because the story moves from one event to another without getting bogged down in unnecessary detail or backstory. I loved how creative the author was with all of the different worlds and alien races Alex and Caleb encounter. It is also immensely rewarding to watch their relationship continue to develop. Characterization, character relationships, and emotions are some of the things G. S. Jennsen excels at, and for me, those are easily the most important aspects of any story. At one point I even found myself tearing up a little, which is pretty rare for me when reading. I appreciate her dedication to creating believable and interesting characters who continue to grow and change with the story.I loved this book and I am so excited to see what's in store for all of these characters in the next installment.

By Catherine Mackay Sidespace: Aurora Renegades was a thoroughly absorbing read that had me from the start. I loved the first trilogy, Aurora Rising and I'm already loving the continuation of the Aurora universe with this new and latest offering in the series. G.S. Jennsen has envisioned a future where humanity is connected to the computer network and I mean literally. Jennsen has extrapolated our increasing 21st century reliance on our smartphones and the like to a world where people can up-grade and enhance there own bodies through new 'ware' - legal or illegal and where children are given their first implants relatively young. Previous readers of the first trilogy will know that Jennsen has taken computer connectiveness to a dazzling new level with the creation of the 'Prevos' - human and AI connectiveness at the quantum level. Just as there are people in the 21st century who express concern over our reliance on technology, so too do some humans in the far-flung future that Jennsen has created. In Sidespace the Prevos are targeted by a terrorist organisation that fears the human mind linking with an artificial one. They make a play at grabbing Devon who is linked to the Annie AI. However, the terrorist organisation are not the only ones targeting the Prevos - the Oversight commitee for military projects in the Alliance are seeking to control the technology and on the colony world of New Babel - home to a number of criminal cartels - Olivia, head of one of the cartels is trying to become a Prevos. All is not looking good for the tenuous relationship between the Alliance and Senecan governments either as political intrigue and greed get the better of some in highly placed government positions.Meanwhile, Caleb and Alex are exploring the Portal Worlds - a series of pockect universes accessed through the portal network. They come across some astounding worlds and alien species and come to some disturbing conclusions about the Metigens (they are the aliens from the previous series who nearly destroyed humanity) influence over the pocket universe.Overall, Jennsen has written a novel that both dazzles and astounds the mind of the reader and I really, really loved the book as much as I did the first trilogy. It is exciting, well written, has well developed characters, has a great plot and is set in a unique future where all things seem possible, yet very dangerous. Sidespace can be read without reading the first trilogy - the author includes a synopsis of what went down in the previous books - though I do recommend new readers begin with the first trilogy. Highly recommended series.

Discover the magical capacities of oneness that built the first pyramid of ancient Egypt. Born a slave in Pharaoh's Land, Bilal had little hope or prospects to improve his life. Indeed his own father has worked mercilessly with their own slave master to mold him into a fighter; the best fighter Pharaoh’s Land has ever seen. They went so far as to put him in death matches. Two men enter and only one leaves alive. He was fifteen when they put him to his first match. His foreign blood line that made him massively larger gave him the advantage; and up to now he had never lost. Losing would truly be the end of him. Only in the darkest recesses of his mind did he contemplate the freedom losing would give him. Bilal contemplates his next step. Will he choose to plummet to his death? Standing on the cliffs edge the warm and gentle breeze of days end touches him, caressing his body with gentle presence. As he takes in the breath taking beauty of the land and setting sunlight spreading out before him he is renewed. The beauty begins to return him to himself and gives him the will to carry on. It is this transformation from utter despair to hope and possibility that gives him a power far beyond his own comprehension. But there are others who watch him, others who know; he embodies the capacities of oneness that are about to change the world as the first pyramid has begun to be built. The Pharaoh’s Builders weaves together an engaging story revealing the magic and beauty hidden in all things and the unlikely choices for kindness in a world most often ugly with the cruelty of those willing to kill for a position of power. This is the first novel from #1 bestselling author Heather Perrywinkle Smith.

The Pharaoh's Builders: The Pharaoh's Land Series, Book One, by Heather Perrywinkle Smith

From the Author When there is no such thing as impossible, what do you choose?  I wrote this book from a very different space than anything I have written before. From the first moment of inspiration it was an exploration of energy. This book has a life of it's own, and I have simply been putting it on paper. It is very loud energetically and through the energy of it, it reveals itself and what would like to be said. Who the characters are, what their relationships are, what they are about as a person and how they function in life. The characters are alive before they have been brought into existence by words. Weird. Fun. Interesting. They tell me who they are.  Most characters came to life in a fully developed flash of inspiration, like the first moment of inspiration in which this book was born. By the question, "I wonder what will happen next?" the story unfolds. Sometimes in order of events, sometimes bits and pieces out of order. At least three more books have revealed themselves in segments of the continuation of this story.  Creating from the joy of it, the curiosity of what will show up and what the story will become; no pre-planning, no outlining, no working to come up with it, simply the question. What will happen next? Who are you? What would you like to say? What are you doing?  I can ask the individual character, the entire book, the chapter, the situation, the future...it is a rich adventure of creating, unlike anything I have done before.  I truly do wonder, what will reveal itself next?...."The Pharaoh's Movers. Book two of the Pharaoh's Land Series" - I know that much! It is already 30% written. The characters from this first book certainly have a lot to say and a lot going on, so the adventure continues for them and for me!...happy reading! I know I am having such a good time writting this!!!

From the Back Cover Ten thousand years ago in Egypt, Pharaoh-Ra surrounded himself with those few who could alter reality by the communion and oneness they are willing to be.Meet Bilal, born a slave, yet somehow unbroken, he reaches for the beauty of oneness even in the darkness that is his everyday life. In an unlikely turn of events Bilal finds himself invited into a world of magic he did not know existed. A world that whispered of the greater possibilities he had dreamed of and seen no way to create, until now...

About the Author Heather Perrywinkle Smith was born and raised in the hills outside of Garberville, California. Her unconventional upbringing fostered a closeness with nature, a joy for exploring the magic of living and wondering what else is possible beyond what is being presented as normal and real.Married since 2005.This story started in a flash of inspiration. I was on my way home from a life changing and uplifting trip to New Zealand. It was in the first few hours of the long flight home that I suddenly had a scenario run through my head. Vivid, clear and embodying more than just the images. It was a visceral, energetic scene unfolding in my minds eye. I thought to myself, "This would be a great story" and instead of letting it go at that, I actually wrote it all down. This became the opening scene to this book "The Pharaoh's Builders!"Just as the first scene unfolded with a life of its own, so too did the rest of the book. I would write when it was easy, when it was fun and when it had that energy of the first moment of conception.  The charactors or relationship between charactors and the events that were to unfold sometimes only in a few words, sometimes the entire scene, sometimes without words, just a sense of an energy not yet actualized. I played with it, I asked it to reveal what it would like to be.  Having never written a novel before and having no pre-conceived notion of the right or wrong way to procede I continued to follow whatever showed up, as the joy of it for me. I would write a few sentences on my iPhone, I would write for hours on my laptop, I would scribble notes on a napkin...this has been a playful creation that I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing!

I started reading it during Thanksgiving, and immediately I started to love the magic in the world that exists in this novel. This book feels like an invitation to a new, amazing world. Almost as if the magic in the book is an actually possibility on earth! Personally I sometimes feel like the world is caving in on my head, and this book also invited me to know that what occasionally looks like a tunnel to me does have a light at the end if I'm willing to go in that direction.I'm so grateful for the book for coming to me in a time where every day it felt like a burden to get up out of bed and even leave the room. Thank you Heather Smith. Thank you so much for an joyful and wonderful read that brought magic into what once felt like a dull life.

And I continued to be captivated by every scene following! I both devoured and savored every page.Heather has created a remarkable story that is both deeply inspiring and through-provoking. She opens the reader to other possibilities and perspectives - all through the lens of a great adventure story. There are surprising developments and depths to this story that continue to have an impact on me after reading it. I can't WAIT to read the 2nd (and 3rd and 4th) books in this series! Thank you, Heather!

By K.M.L Exciting story full of insights and points of view that seem "magical & unreal" but could actually apply to your life as well. I hardly ever read every word of a story, in fact before this book I can't remember the last time I read the whole thing, didn't get bored and skip forward.Still loving this book. I'm going to read it a 2nd time as there are all kinds of hidden secrets you can apply to your life to make it better. I wonder what I missed the first time! I know the author is working on Book 2 - I cannot wait for that!!!!!

This was a very sweet story, that in a lot of ways brought me back to my early twenties, and those feelings you get when you meet your first real love – and especially appreciate it when you’ve spent way too much time on someone that shows the exact opposite of love, which is exactly what Kerri did in this story. However, when Kerri got to Woodland Creek, I liked that the author didn’t make her instantly fall head over heels literally the second she entered Woodland Creek and met Warren. It wasn’t instant break up, leave town, fall in love. Although she ‘accidentally’ met Warren right away, and they were instantly attracted to each other, there was still a very sweet time frame where he just sat back and waited for her previous douche bag to completely leave her life and her heart. And by the way, I think the author did use ‘douche bag’ and several other hilarious descriptions for her ex, and descriptions that Warren and his cousin used on each other. It added to the fun of the book, how the two of them and Kerri’s instant BFF/roommate at college (who also knew Warren and his cousin since they were kids) joked around with each other -- and definitely helped Kerri a bunch more when things got real about Woodland Creek.Although there were some tense moments, this wasn’t meant to be an action-packed book. It was about early twenty-somethings going to college, one in a whole new town, finding themselves and each other. There were definitely some heart-racing in a sexy way scenes, but well placed, and I loved them. I really enjoyed this book and getting to know these characters.

She had a boyfriend that used her as a house cleaner, babysitter of his son and a door mat. He didn't love her, he was just a user.So when your not happy with your life you change it and off to a college and teaching job in another cityHer move to Woodland Creek (a town full if shifter the humans know nothing about) was not as smooth as she hoped. She got into a car wreck and had to be saves landing in the arms of the sweetest shifter around . It was the first of many amazing changes to her life.I am a first time reader for M. C. Cerny. I got to say I love her writing. The storyline is great, the characters are fantastic and there is action and drama what more could you want.ThevBook is written in the first person if that's helps any. I really enjoyed this storyBook gifted for an honest review and I honestly loved it.

The hero is so dang lovable and sweet and honest--even if he is hiding a few things from his heroine. :) I recommend this wonderful novella to anyone who likes paranormal. It's a very sweet story of two people finding their way through life and toward each other, with all the twist that being a shifter can bring.Well done!

Nocturne: Book Two (The Celtic Vampyre Saga) After Nathaniel and Faelynn find more than an invaluable confidant in one another, together they begin to boldly journey deeper into the odyssey of their own destinies. Vowing to aid Nathaniel in his quest for salvation, only if he takes her to see the one she believes is responsible for all the heartache in her life so she can savour the sweet taste of vengeance, Faelynn finds herself making the long trek to the isle of Newfoundland, the dominion of Cormack de Crüel. Unknown to Nathaniel, Cormack and the vampyre elites are secretly meeting at the secluded Castle de Crüel in order to put the final pieces in place for the creation of a North American Vampyre Union—an insidious organisation that has only a dark and twisted agenda in store not just for humanity, but also vampyrekind. Has Faelynn unwittingly placed herself in harm’s way by putting her trust in Nathaniel? Or has Nathaniel foolishly placed himself in the line of fire by choosing to help someone other than himself for the first time in over two centuries? This intriguing and passionate saga would be attractive to the habitual readers of Gothic literary works, paranormal romance, and horror. *Warning: Some scenes within Nocturne: Book Two (The Celtic Vampyre Saga) contain graphic language and explicit sex.* Reviews: “After the stunning opening to The Celtic Vampyre Saga, ‘Nocturne’ picks up where ‘Disenchanted’ left off. Once again, C.K. Farrell draws you in from the get-go with his unique and engaging style, which at times leaves you breathless. This saga is as unpredictable as it is riveting.” – Ruairi O’Hagan, Cork's RedFM. "Nocturne (The Celtic Vampyre Saga) is a hybrid genre of a read that has a bite to match its bark. It is written with an eloquent voice and the narrative has an honesty to it that can be identified by all who have loved and by all who have lost. It's simply a deliciously, depraved read." - Veronica Salva, New Hampshire Gothic Horror Review. "The Celtic Vampyre Saga is an enchanting and terrifying account of lost souls who seek redemption. It is a lot more than a simple, lustful vampire tale. Instead, it is a mature, artistic, and thought-provoking piece with substance in abundance. Read it, you will not find yourself disappointed, only inspired and enlightened.” – D’arcy Ondine, Artist, Poet, and Author.

13 of 13 people found the following review helpful. brilliant By Roar I'm enthralled by this story. I absolutely love it. I can't wait to see where it all goes and what twists and turns await us readers. Farrell has written a tremendously exciting story. Read this saga, you will NOT be disappointed!

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. The satisfying main course. By Linda Ahhh, book 2. If book 1 was the soup and salad, book 2 is the juicy prime rib dinner. The story line deepens. The characters of Faaelynn and Nathaniel are even more entwined with each other. There is some steamy romantic sensual scenes written in and oooowweee what a bonus! Also, like the first book in this series, the writing style harkens back to a time long gone which lends itself beautifully with the elegance and complexity of the characters. I am more impressed with this, the second installment of Celtic Vampyre Saga than I am of the first book. Well worth the price, and an absolutely wonderful way to spend a long and lazy afternoon.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Better than Disenchanted. By Gregory Smith I loved Disenchanted (book 1 in the series) but this was even better. I love the changes in how FaeLynn and Nathaniel get along, I also liked learning about Nathaniel's past as another reader mentioned. If you enjoy books like The Vampire Lestat, you'll like this. It has just the right amount of darkness but not so much that the vampires become base animals with no morality whatsoever.
