From the Inside Flap "Wake up," he growled, gripping the chin of the closest man and shaking him. The slaver came to at once and grunted as he tried to yell through the cloth gag in his mouth. The sound was pitifully muffled, and he struggled with the bindings on his wrists and ankles. "Shout all you want. No one can hear you through that," Raz spat, standing up. The man stilled and grew silent, eyes wide, taking in Raz's towering outline against the lantern light from the road. "If I'd wanted you dead, you'd be dead, so stop worrying. I have a message. On the other hand, if it's not delivered--well, your friends will be happy to explain the consequences to you." He gestured to the other figures laying in the dark past the bound man, who turned to look. His muted scream was oddly satisfying, and Raz smirked humorlessly. The slaver fell over in his haste to scoot away. Blood pooled on the cobbled stone, forming black puddles where each of the rest of the patrol had had their throats slit. Every horrified gaze was wide and staring, some fixed upon the night sky above, some on the walls around them. Raz had made sure each and every one knew they were going to die. "Are you listening?" he asked. The man nodded hurriedly, seeming unable to look away from the bodies of his comrades. "Good. Then tell your employers that Raz i'Syul is coming for them next. Tell them the Monster says they'd best start running, and that they'd best start running now."
About the Author Bryce O'Connor learned the importance of a well-crafted story at an early age. Raised on the tall tales of Brian Jacques' Redwall and J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, he fell in love with reading when he realized that one's imagination is the only place where dragons might actually fly free. Graduating from Ithaca College with his Bachelors in Creative Writing and Doctorate of Physical Therapy, O'Connor currently resides in Rochester, NY. Child of the Daystar is his debut novel.

22 of 22 people found the following review helpful. surprisingly good: enter a new world and be amazed By Kangaroo The writer is able to create a new world that slowly unfolds in front of the reader’s eyes. Different cultures, races, and characters are beautifully created as well as a backstory of a world and civilization that is very old and at the brink of destruction from within and without. Two characters, who are both very different from the societies they live in, each for very different reasons, are not just trying to survive but moreover are trying to change the world around them. How will their different goals and methods collide and intersect? Will they cooperate?A nomadic desert tribe adopts a baby that was left in the desert for dead. He had been a slave but had fought his way to freedom with a high price. But - he is not human, he is an atherian (which is kinda like a dragon) and one of his kind because unlike most of his lizard relations he has wings. Even though he looks like an animal (and many characters in the book use that derogatory), he is as smart as any one else. Yet, after he recovers, he is soon faster, stronger and bigger than his human family. A prophecy was spoken over his life and the questions remains what that fate will actually look like. When his family meets a terrible tragedy, Raz sets out on a course of revenge. But can he truly change the crumbling world around him?The idea for the main character is interesting and intriguing. He is so very different from the main civilized society that rejects him. The desert culture he becomes a part of is more accepting because they can see his humanity. That is the point where Raz creates an interesting dichotomy between his alien animal like appearance and his very human, compassionate heart for the beggars, outcasts, and slaves. While the civilized humans have become animalistic at heart and treat each other without dignity and respect. He has an interesting, only partially revealed backstory and it can be expected that further books in the series will establish his family and background more thoroughly and one can only hope that the story will come back to his mother and her reasons for sending him away from his family.Raz’s counter character and destiny (as foretold in the prophecy) Syrah balances the violence and brutality of Raz’s actions with a very different life style determined by the Faith. Their one unbreakable rule to never kill or cause someone to die, yet their mastery of martial arts and other fighting techniques, their ministry of healing and diplomacy presents this other possible way of life that could be an escape route for Raz as well as the possibility of mending his broken heart. Her albinism sets her apart from everyone else as well but she still thrives in that society and her difference is no hinderance for her success as a diplomat and helper. Their brief, intense encounter changes both their lives forever even though the implications of that event are more complex than anyone imagined.
14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. I Can't Help Sharing This Amazing Story By Wesley Perry I really enjoyed this novel, more than I thought I would. The story's pace did not drag, nor was it rushed, it simply flowed at a close to perfect pace. The character development was astounding, especially Raz, the Atherian lizard species protagonist whom the author was able to truly make human in all sense of the word. This was the first and only time I have fallen in love with and cared for a reptile. I never would have thought it would be possible for me, but I did. The other characters were the same in the sense that I grew to love those who were kind and good, felt conflicted with some who lost their ways, and hated the despicable ones. There were a few moments or scenes that were so powerful, they were able to touch and trigger very strong emotions. The story drew me in, fully engaged my attention, and left me hungry for more. This is an absolutely spectacular debut novel from a very talented author. I cannot wait to see the story continue throughout the rest of the series. I've already recommended it to others and hope that they enjoy it as much as I did. This is definitely a rising author to watch out for!

By Ruthie Child of the Daystar is the beginning of a new and exciting series called The Wings of War. The development of the characters and settings is neither rushed nor superficial. O’Connor presents an original world full of intrigue and promise.The two main plots that follow Raz i’Syul and Syrah switch back and forth seamlessly, and their crossing paths provide the catalyst for the story's explosive movement forward and outward. Even though Raz and Syrah are completely opposite in every sense of the word, their similarities are astounding. Keep that thought in mind as you read, and you will see they are two sides of the same coin. Brilliant!Raz is fiercely adorable, especially in the beginning when he is so young, and his hero status is quickly and heart wrenchingly established early on. As the protagonist, Raz is loyal to a fault, often blind with vengeance, flawed, vulnerable, cunning, compelling, and oh so unique. The story has two scenes involving Raz (one toward the beginning and one toward the end) that left me breathless and wanting more of this fabulous hero and his adventures. Both Raz and Syrah are still young at the end of Child of the Daystar, and as the series develops, we can look forward to watching them grow and mature in this wondrous bildungsroman that is like no other.
