1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Can love tame a wild wolf that eats animals and villagers? Neat story. By Rob Natiuk The writing and illustrations capture the feel of the world St. Francis lived in. They are simple but rich in color and subject matter. The author positions this story well, helping youngsters go way back in time, tying modern times to olden times. But to do this well is tricky. For a few pages, we are jarred back and forth between today and "back then." For instance, the author mentions "small pigs in brick houses." That distracts from the flow of the story. But then we get into the story of the lone wolf who ate the village's animals and even a few people. What's the solution? How can St. Francis reconcile wolf and people? Ah, that's the story of a miracle! I believe, as I did, you'll enjoy discovering that wondrous event.

It's more a chapter than a book. While I 'bought' it for free, and I'm not out any money, had I known it would have had such a cliffhanger ending, I probably would not have downloaded it.The writing seemed forced and didn't flow well. I understand wanting to be descriptive to give the reader the best possible setting in the mind's eye, but 75% of this 'book' was nothing more than a description of the heroine missing the rock star. It was also inconsistent, as the book opens with Karen looking out her apartment window at night, to logging off her workstation and going downstairs for lunch.I don't see myself purchasing/reading any more of this series,, unless the others are also free.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. but this is a good and entertaining beginning to a new and continued series By Brenda I generally prefer a start to finish short story, but this is a good and entertaining beginning to a new and continued series. Good writing. I enjoyed all the details and thoughts of the character.

The start is true to forum for anyone who has gone through something like this. But, I would see this more as an intro to a bigger book. Maybe a sneak peek?

Ginger must save her high-tech hometown from robots gone rogue in this hilariously quirky science fiction novel from National Book Award–winning author Pete Hautman.Welcome to Flinkwater, Iowa, home of the largest manufacturer of Articulated Computerized Peripheral Devices in the world. If you own a robot, it probably came from Flinkwater. Meet Ginger Crump, the plucky, precocious (and somewhat sarcastic) genius who finds herself in the middle of a national emergency when Flinkwater’s computers start turning people into vegetables. Mental vegetables, that is. In Ginger’s words, they’ve been “bonked.” When Ginger’s father is bonked, she recruits her self-declared future husband, boy genius Billy George, to help her find the source of the bonkings. Soon they’re up against a talking dog, a sasquatch, and a zombie, while Flinkwater is invaded by an army of black SUVs led by the witless-but-dangerous Agent Ffelps from Homeland Security. Can Ginger get to the bottom of the bonkings, or will computer chaos reign forever?

The Flinkwater Factor (The Flinkwater Chronicles), by Pete Hautman

From School Library Journal Gr 3–6—Ginger Crump lives in Flinkwater, IA. That may sound dull and boring, except for the fact that a screen saver or "screenie" is turning people into drooling zombies. Most people in town work for ACPOD, a Silicon Valley-like technology company. This means that most residents are of high intelligence. Ginger quickly figures out how to avoid getting "bonked" by the hidden code. She and her crush, Billy George, have to solve the problem while dodging the authorities who think they are terrorists. Hautman creates fun, smart characters with brilliant minds. Just when they think they have solved the "bonking" problem, a talking dog enters the scene, which takes the story in another hilarious direction, and readers meet even more colorful characters. While all of this is going on, Ginger is also concerned with the simple things such as, when will she finally get to kiss someone? Hautman includes a guide at the back of the book explaining which scientific details mentioned in the chapters are real or science fiction. Is the poop-net real? Readers will likely want to find out. VERDICT Middle grade fans of Carl Hiassen's mysteries will enjoy Hautman's inventive characters and plot.—Kris Hickey, Columbus Metropolitan Library, OH

Review "Middle grade fans of Carl Hiassen’s mysteries will enjoy Hautman’s inventive characters and plot." (School Library Journal)"Fast, funny episodes featuring creative takes on close-to-reality science." (Kirkus Reviews)"Hautman, a National Book Award winner, makes his first foray into middle grade with this quirky, dryly funny offering of a maybe-future." (Booklist)"Fast-paced action, quirky characters, and amusing dialog make this a quick, fun read with a satisfying conclusion." (School Library Connection)

About the Author Pete Hautman is the author of Godless, which won the National Book Award, and many other critically acclaimed books for teens and adults, including Blank Confession, All-In, Rash, No Limit, Invisible, and Mr. Was, which was nominated for an Edgar Award by the Mystery Writers of America. 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The Funny, Action, Science Book You've Been Looking For By Pop Bop This is a smart and sophisticated, very crisp and funny, science based high-tech action story that is perfectly aimed at and accessible to an alert middle grade reader. The burg of Flinkwater, Iowa is home to a super advanced computing/research/science facility and everybody in town is associated, one way or the other, with the weird and unpredictable projects being conducted there. Sometimes that stuff gets out of hand and the chaos spreads through the town. In many ways the underlying feel of Flinkwater, the interlocked stories that make up the book, and the quirky characters, are similar to what was done in the television show "Eureka", which had a similar premise. Here, though, our narrator is precocious thirteen year old Ginger, a wise, observant, funny, slightly sarcastic, authentic and goodhearted self proclaimed science nerd. Ginger, who is one of the most engaging and refreshing middle grade heroines I've read lately, is the science/geek/tech girl that every cultural commentator has been looking for. She knows her science, is comfortable with computing and engineering, offers a lot of witty commentary on science nerd culture, and totally holds her own as the manic action unfolds. As her sidekick, Ginger has Billy, the super genius guy on whom she crushes, and who has no idea that he is her boyfriend. That sounds cute or icky, but it's actually a pretty funny and rather charming twist on those old-fashioned romantic conventions about a girl setting her sights on a guy. This isn't a huge part of the book, but it adds a sweet bit of variety and humor to the narrative. More important are the secondary characters. You can't have an exotic and quirky town without exotic and quirky characters, and this book is loaded with mad scientists, nutty professors, sweetly befuddled scientists, villainous conspirators and a wide range of attractively odd sorts. Sort of like having lunch at the Engineering Quad cafeteria.Interestingly, Ginger's parents, and many other helpful adults, are described and treated affectionately. They, in turn, can be rational, resourceful and patient. For example, every now and then Ginger calls her paranoid, ex-CIA Uncle Ashton for advice, and those conversations are a hoot. Or another example, Ginger's conversations with her mother are insightful and even touching, and reflect their mutual regard and conflict. The author never goes for the cheap, easy sarcastic out, but tries to do new and fresh things with such relationships. And of course Redge, the dog with a collar that broadcasts his thoughts, adds more gentle humor. While there is an overarching plot of sorts, that mainly serves to string together a number of episodes and sub-plots so that this feels a little bit like an anthology with recurring characters. That's a pretty clever strategy for a middle grade book, because there are natural breaks and the plotting doesn't get too convoluted or tedious. This almost-episodic what-will-happen-next? approach suits the material and the narrator very well. So, if you've been wondering where all of the funny high tech girl heroine action books for middle graders have gone, here's a really good one. (Two other things: 1) an engaging brief addendum addresses what in the book is real science, what's fiction, and what's in-between; 2) don't be mislead, the book's cover is younger, cuter, and simpler than is the book itself.)Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

The Science of Getting Rich, by Wallace D. Wattles

Review "...His is a gentle philosophy which excludes competition and cheating, and encourages cooperation." -- Publishers Weekly

From the Publisher This classic Wallace D. Wattles title has often been compared to Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, and many believe they act as excellent companion titles. Individuals who have read books by Robert Allen, Suze Orman or David Bach will find often find this title to as well be of interest.

From the Author The man who owns all he wants for the living of all the life he is capable of living is rich; and no man who has not plenty of money can have all he wants. Life has advanced so far, and become so complex, that even the most ordinary man or woman requires a great amount of wealth in order to live in a manner that even approaches completeness. Every person naturally wants to become all that they are capable of becoming; this desire to realize innate possibilities is inherent in human nature; we cannot help wanting to be all that we can be. Success in life is becoming what you want to be; you can become what you want to be only by making use of things, and you can have the free use of things only as you become rich enough to buy them. To understand the science of getting rich is therefore the most essential of all knowledge.

In writing this book I have sacrificed all other considerations to plainness and simplicity of style, so that all might understand. The plan of action laid down herein was deduced from the conclusions of philosophy; it has been thoroughly tested, and bears the supreme test of practical experiment; it works. If you wish to know how the conclusions were arrived at, read the writings of the authors mentioned above; and if you wish to reap the fruits of their philosophies in actual practice, read this book and do exactly as it tells you to do.

THIS BOOK WILL TRANSFORM YOUR MIND & YOUR LIFE By Happy Bunny Ladies and Gentlemen, this book will without any doubt change your life, by changing your mind about the concept of "money". So many of us were brought up with the idea of money as a finite resource, which you had to compete for. This book is desgined to release every preconcieved idea that is holding us all back from wealth. The basic premise of this book is that becoming wealthy is a science, that once understood, and replicated will create wealth in everyone's life. Wealth is as infinite as the creative mind. Create ideas, take action and abundance will flow.I have read over 200 books on success and wealth, before I read this book. Nothing I had read upto this point had such an incrediblely profound effect on my wealth, because it changed my misconceptions on what it took to become wealthy. Within ten months of applying these principles and concepts, I had expedentially increased my income to levels that would had been unthinkable 12 months earlier.I would reccomend that every student of this book, also read, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, Money is Easy by Larry Winget, The Einstien Factor Wenger & Poe, Psyco Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz & Born Rich by Bob Proctor. All these books will enhance your understanding of this incredible book. The ideas and concepts, once studied and applied will transform your mental approach to money. This is a book that will take you a day to read, but a life-time to understand fully. Give it serious study, and I guarantee you success

Practical, Hands-on Assistance; and Many Original Ideas By A Customer This new release is a reprint of the original 1910 edition of Wallace Wattles' guide to financial success and personal growth. Make sure that you get the new 2002 Iceni Books edition, and not some of the other versions that are around, which have been made unusable by editing. Wattles' book is a true classic in the genre, and it has been mentioned along with such other classics like George Clason's "The Richest Man In Babylon" and Napoleon Hill's "Think and Grow Rich." It was always a surprise to me, that this book, in full original title "The Science of Getting Rich or Financial Success Through Creative Thought," is less well-known than the titles mentioned above. While Clason's book, in the essence, is a tale about the workings of exponential growth, and Hill's book is little more than the repetition of the formula, "whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve," in Wattles' book there is much more to be found.Wattles, like Hill, also emphasizes the importance of using one's power of thought, and one's willpower, as an indispensable ingredient on the way to get rich. But Wattles with his suggestions is way ahead of Hill, because he does not think exclusively along egoistical lines, as does Hill. Throughout the book he warns the reader of acquiring riches in a competitive way, and strongly advises to do any business in a creative way instead. He asserts that the reader should never compete for what is already there, but should instead create something of value, be it a product, or a service. This thought alone is a revelation. Wattles makes unmistakably clear that only in that way it is possible for everyone to get rich. Instead of keeping others down by competition, if you strive to get rich in a creative way, you inspire other people to do so as well, and open up a way for others to follow.Besides this thought, which is original in how to get rich, and self-help literature, Wattles has much other original, yet always practical, advice for his readers, like how to best get into the right business, how to direct thoughts and actions purposefully, how to convey the impression of personal growth, and much more. I am issuing here, however, some kind of a warning to you: Wattles grounds his science on the ideas of oriental philosophies, which state that there exists one original substance in the universe, where all things originate from. To back up that notion, he mentions that this idea was also held by many western philosophers, like Hegel, and Emerson, and requires the reader to accept the truth of this notion by faith. I cannot say that I am a believer in the one substance, and still, I have learned some of my most important lessons from Wattles. So do not be put off by that esoteric concept, but concentrate instead on the solid foundations of financial and personal success that Wattles hands over to you. I am convinced that Wattles in this book says all that you need for success.

Yep -- The Best Ever By Bible Belt Unbuckler I watched the first twenty minutes of the DVD of "The Secret" (it's offered free on their website), and thought it was really hokey. It felt like they were trying to make a "Da Vinci Code" production out of it. To my knowledge, no "authorities throughout history" have ever tried to keep "the Secret" (i.e., the Law of Attraction) from humanity. But I was curious about the book that inspired "The Secret's" creator, so I checked out Wallace Wattles' "The Science of Getting Rich."Wow! And Super-Wow! Wattles has nailed all the self-help books (all the great ones anyway) that I've ever read and put it all in one slim volume. And I can state confidently, "This is the foundational book for fulfilling your life. You'll never need to read another one about 'getting the life you want.'"For those of you who doubt, or just plain ridicule, the idea that you can get what you want by simply focusing on it and ceasing to focus on what you DON'T want, I recommend this experiment:For one week, carry two little notepads with you, everywhere you go. Each notepad should have a different colored cover so they're easily identifiable. Label one "Positive" and the other "Negative."As you go through your week, every time you hear, see or feel something positive in your surroundings, put a check mark in the "Positive" notepad. Every time you hear, see or feel something negative in your surroundings, put a checkmark in the "Negative" notepad. Do this for EVERYTHING you take in, whether it involves you personally or not--chats with friends, news reports, conversations you overhear on the bus, etc. If you're taking it in, put a checkmark in the appropriate notepad.Be sure, especially, to include all the entertainment you see or hear. Be conscious of the story, the lyrics, etc. Is the message negative about life no matter how hilarious or thought-provoking it is? (A great example would be "Borat.") If so, put a checkmark in the "Negative" notepad. At the end of the week, total the checkmarks in each notepad. If you have more negative checkmarks than positive ones (and I suspect you'll have many more), ask yourself how you can possibly get ANYTHING you want from life when you're taking in all that negativity, day after day? The answer is, you can't--because you don't have the Life Energy for it. All that negativity is draining it out of you.By focusing only on what your heart desires, and believing unconditionally that those things are yours to have, you connect to the Universe which gave you those desires in the first place, and intends for you to fulfill them, in the name of Creation. As Wattles says again and again, the Universe wants you to have these things even more than you do. But you can't connect to the Universe as long as you're filling your head with the noise and negativity of the outside world."The Science of Getting Rich" will show you exactly how to "tune out and tune in," so you can have the wonderful life you were created for.Give it a try. The only thing you've got to lose is a life you never wanted in the first place.
