Ever since the financial crisis of 2008, doubts have been raised about the future of capitalism. In this broad-ranging survey of financial capitalism from antiquity to the present, Larry Neal reveals the ways in which the financial innovations throughout history have increased trade and prosperity as well as improving standards of living. These innovations have, however, all too often led to financial crises as a result of the failure of effective coordination among banks, capital markets, and governments. The book examines this key interrelationship between financial innovation, government regulation and financial crises across three thousand years, showing through past successes and failures the key factors that underpin any successful recovery and sustain economic growth. The result is both an essential introduction to financial capitalism and also a series of workable solutions that will help both to preserve the gains we have already achieved and to mitigate the dangers of future crises.

A Concise History of International Finance: From Babylon to Bernanke (New Approaches to Economic and Social History), by Larry Neal

Review "This is the most impressive, most comprehensive, and most up-to-date single volume history of finance there is. Its central argument about the beneficial effects of financial innovation - along with the many cautionary tales of how and why things go sour, of the consequences of adequate mechanisms for ensuring commitment and responsibility - make it at once a classic, whose influence will endure a long time." Harold James, author of The End of Globalization: Lessons from the Great Depression"This is an outstanding concise history of international finance. It documents the path of finance from the personal to the impersonal, from ancient to modern times. This is not merely a summary of what others have done, but soundly based on Larry Neal's own careful research. As Neal writes in chapter one, he wants to look historically at where there were effective solutions to financial difficulties and how these 'solutions' played out through time. The book is a splendid introduction to the history of international finance." Mira Wilkins, co-author of Global Electrification: Multinational Enterprise and International Finance in the History of Light and Power, 1878-2007"A rich mix of wide-ranging, keenly known historical specifics, conceptual constructions, broad long-term horizons, and narrative unfolding. An erudite and thoughtful gem, reflecting a lifetime of scholarship and reflection." Richard Roberts, author of Saving the City: The Great Financial Crisis of 1914"Did you know that modern international finance had its origin in financing the Crusades? Larry Neal reveals interconnections between international finance and wars, trade, governments and even religion in his concise history. [He] vividly chronicles a thousand years of financial innovations, demonstrating that financial crises gradually emerged as more potent stimuli to financial innovation than religion." Peter Temin, co-author of Keynes: Useful Economics for the World Economy"As economists and policy makers are drawn to history for a deeper understanding of the wonders and dangers of financial innovation, Neal's outstanding scholarship provides the much-needed introduction to financial development from the Assyrian times to the present. It will remain the standard reference for years to come." Gianni Toniolo, co-author of The World Economy Between the Wars

About the Author Larry Neal is Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and was Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science from 2006 to 2014. Many passive sentences, which confuse or omit the subjects / focus of the story. Also, topics arise without explanation only to arise later in passing detail. Still, I learned much about the evolution of financial markets and assets. Worth the read overall.

Something is amiss in the capital. Callifax has always been a bastion for Inquisitor Simon Whitlock—the walled city a barrier against the chaos of the magical world. After the physical and emotional pain of his last few mission, safety is all he desires. But a monster is stalking the streets, an abomination far more violent than even the mystical denizens he's thus far encountered. The monster has slain women in Solomon's Way, the nightlife district of the modern capital. Solomon's Way, a part of town Simon and Luthor have frequented all too often. Solomon's Way, where the woman he loves lives and works. Now Inquisitor Whitlock must face a new breed of monster, one that will force the Inquisitor to face his very shortcomings as a friend and a man. Simon has killed a demon, werewolves, and vampires, but some of the most dangerous demons live inside us all. Demons that can't be killed by swords and guns.

Each book has been drastically different and completely unpredictable. He doesn't follow a set template at all; these are not cookie cutter books!Instead of the masterful duo (which now seems to be a trio) leaving on an adventure, they stay in Fairfax and are thrust in the midst of a murder mystery that hits way too close. There was one point in the story where I was about to hurl my kindle across the room in disbelief, but quickly realized that this would just waste precious reading time. Jon looks like a nice guy in his author photo, but don't let this fool you! He has no problem ripping your heart out and destroying your emotions in this book! In fact, you may want to keep a box of tissues nearby for this one. A mix between Frankenstein and Jack the Riper, this story goes where I never thought it would. (Can you tell that I'm still very hung up on the huge curve-ball that he threw?!) This is the first book in the series to end with on a cliffhanger, but I guess the story had to take a break somewhere or he just wanted to prolong the suspenseful agony he left us in. Book four better be getting very close to publication because I can't wait much longer to see if my guess for the mysterious villain is correct and to see justice served.

Smith-Pena I picked up the first volume in this series while searching for an entertaining free read. I was completely hooked after "Wolves of the Northern Rift" and purchased Book 2, "The Blood Thief", soon after. I couldn't wait for Book 3 to come out and I treated myself for Christmas. I was not disappointed! While there are obvious comparisons to Sherlock Holmes and Watson, we find that all of the main characters are contradictory and complex, and yet they fit together seamlessly. The plot moved quickly and somewhat predictably yet held enough surprises, twists and turns that I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book and read it over the course of two nights. Either I have to read more slowly or Jon Messenger needs to write faster! LOLBrief synopsis: Simon, Luthor and Mattie find themselves in the midst of an investigation into a series of odd murders in Solomon's Way, the seedier side of town where Simon's fiance lives and works. Their investigation brings them into political conflict with the local constabulary where they find an unlikely ally and a possible suspect. In the background, Simon is offered a promotion by the King. As the story unfolds we find ourselves wondering where the politics and mayhem will bring the Inquisitor, Luthor and Mattie -- all of whom have secrets to keep. This latest installment brings more depth to the characters and fleshes out a bit more of the world of Callifax and its politics. And now we will have to wait until Book 4 to see how the author will weave all of these threads into concluding this story line. Looking forward to it!

I was happy that it was yet another fantastic book in the Magic and Machinery series, but now I'm anxious for book four. It does end with some unresolved plot lines, (a sort of cliff hanger, if you will) but that just makes me want to read the next book even more. Over 2015, I've read books one through three in this series, and each one is great in its own way.Once more, I'll say I think one of the strongest points in this series is the characters. The first book, The Wolves of the Northern Rift established Simon Whitlock and Luthor Strong as a great team, and this latest installment, The Golem of Solomon's Way is no exception. What I took away from this book is the fact that Luthor is emerging as the voice of reason between him and Simon. That's evident from the way he handled certain developments in the plot, and I find myself liking him more and more in each book that has come out. And Mattie the werewolf? She's a great secondary character, and it's interesting to see her character development. As far as the plot, instead of finding themselves traveling to some remote corner of the kingdom, this book finds the three remaining in the capital city of Callifax, investigating a series of murders in the titular Solomon's Way. In this regard, I found myself thinking of Sherlock Holmes, a comparison I made after reading book one.Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and my rating is 5/5 platypires.

Adam Scott leads an ordinary life, in an ordinary house, on an ordinary street, in an ordinary neighborhood where – much to his disappointment – nothing happens that’s out of the ordinary. At least not until the day he runs into a mysterious hooded figure in a white cloak who tries to kill him. As Adam flees the assassin, he finds help from strangers who whisk him away to an extraordinary place – the world of the Unseen. A place where objects behave like people. A place where people behave like superhumans. A place where plants eat meat, pets aim to kill, and rugs can fly. In this hidden world, Adam finds a new home (that isn’t so ordinary) and an unexpected adventure that takes him from never-ending palaces to beast-ridden jungles to treasure-filled caves. All the while, Adam tries to figure out why anyone would want him dead, and what it's got to do with an ancient prophecy that nobody knows much about – except for one thing: It's about Adam.

The author's wry sense of humor is evident in this fun enjoyable entertainment. This is the story of the Starship Magellan. It is still adrift in space ten years after an alien attack. In the first book we are introduced to the survivors that were trapped in Cargo Bay 37.They were fortunate to have supplies to set up hydroponic gardening and chickens for eggs. They want to expand beyond their fortress, but danger lurks on the ship in the form ofthe alien attackers as well as other survivors known as scavengers. Each of the three books continues the story, with the style being a little different in each book. The second book, Asin's Hope was my favorite. The third book, Red Swarm was "can't put it down until I finish reading it" exciting!.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. fun to get to know these characters and the wild world they are trying to live in By egwolfe A surprisingly enjoyable read. The story followed the journey of likable protagonists that realize redemption as they pursue vision of restoration. They pursued an overwhelmingly difficult mission that only grows more insurmountable as the unique an vast setting reveals its mysteries to our unlikely heroes. I was compelled by the themes of friendship, reconciliation, and authentic leadership and service fueled by values like hope and respect. I was expecting nothing more than some mindless sifi and found myself caring about the plight of the characters and inspired by the arc of their story.

Hints of Battlestar Galactica but BIGGER. Is about a group of friends managing to survive in an interstellar colonization ship of incredible size. Lots of ship to explore and many hair-raising adventures doing it. I could definitely see this being turned into a mini-series.

With humor and sensitivity, a debut novelist explores the coming of age of a girl caught between two cultures as she finds the courage to forge a new destiny."Miss, will you be my Amiga?" Amiga means "friend" in Spanish, but at the youth center, it meant a lady to take you places. I never asked myself if two people as different as Miss and me could ever really be amigas. When Jacinta Juarez is paired with a rich, famous mentor, she is swept away from the diapers and dishes of her own daily life into a world of new experiences. But crossing la linea into Miss’s world is scary. Half of Jacinta aches for the comfort of Mamá and the familiar safety of the barrio, while the other half longs to embrace a future that offers more than cleaning stuff for white people. When her family is torn apart, Jacinta needs to bring the two halves of herself together to win back everything she's lost. Can she channel the power she’s gained from her mentor and the strength she’s inherited from Mamá to save her shattered home life?

Look Both Ways in the Barrio Blanco, by Judith Robbins Rose

From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—Jacinta may not know much about the world outside the barrio, but she knows how to grab a chance with both hands and make it work for her. When a well-known news anchorwoman comes to report on her youth center, Jacinta uses a combination of luck, cunning, and raw emotion to guilt "Miss" into becoming her amiga and mentor. As she and and Miss get closer and come to know each other's families over the next year, they frustrate and learn from one another, and ultimately precipitate a crisis in Jacinta's already fraught life. Miss is also far from perfect, and she struggles openly with professional, personal, and financial issues, but Jacinta's dangers tend to be more immediate—her parents are both undocumented, and her family faces eviction, deportation, and the violence and uncertainty of re-entry. The story is narrated from Jacinta's point of view after the fact, with both additional exposition and regretful foreshadowing. This allows the author a greater range of perspective, but makes Jacinta's experiences less immediate, more told than shown. The plotting is rough and choppy but the characters burn through the page. Jacinta with her fierce neediness, Miss with her irritability, fear, condescension/confusion, and basic decency. It's as pleasurable to watch these characters take one another by surprise as it is horribly anxiety-producing to see them hurt, stumble, insult, and misunderstand nearly every situation requiring contextual awareness. Rose doesn't sugarcoat the hypocrisies and tough realities of the relationship, and of the very real reasons that they mistrust one another. Nearly everyone in the book makes some some pretty serious and unforgivable mistakes, but as flawed humans they are allowed to wear their flaws, to make mature decisions and stupid childish ones. Rather than writing an "issue book," Rose presents characters in crisis, whose stories are personal, rather than broadly representative, and the book is better for it. Ultimately, this is a story about code switching, and about the different skill sets and assumptions required for complex cross-cultural and cross-class situations. VERDICT An interesting first novel that treats its complex characters with unusual dignity.—Katya Schapiro, Brooklyn Public Library

Ultimately, this is a story about code switching, and about the different skill sets and assumptions required for complex cross-cultural and cross-class situations. An interesting first novel that treats its complex characters with unusual dignity.—School Library JournalRose convincingly depicts Jacinta’s struggles as she explores aspects of upper-middle-class culture—French and gymnastics lessons, theater and ballet performances—while coping with the instability and grimness of barrio life and desperately missing her mother...A moving portrayal of a girl’s effort to embrace both her Mexican roots and the possibilities of American life, as well as an affecting look at an important contemporary issue.—Publishers WeeklyThis smart debut is a poignant exploration of cultural variations and family ties through the eyes of a lovable and funny narrator. Timely in its look at the plight of undocumented immigrants and their American-born children, it is a story of empowerment against the shadows of life in the barrio.—BooklistJacinta’s story gives readers insight into the world of immigrant families and their difficult lives: the fear of discovery, the poverty, distrust of anyone who is not Mexican.—VOYAI loved "Look Both Ways in the Barrio Blanco" for its passionate story telling and unflagging integrity. My Parents Won't Let Me Go To Bed by Peter Raber was purchased as a stocking stuffer for my nephew. He loves it, and perhaps more importantly, his parents and and his aunt and uncle thought it was great. Mr. Raber's humorous story of a little bear who's parents are pretty relatable to a night owl like myself is matched by adorable illustrations that Raber inked himself. I have seen Raber's/Heartdrive Media's other work via their iOS app Pete's Robot. Mr. Raber obviously understands children and has a knack for telling a story - I'd recommend My Parents Won't Let Me Go To Bed to anyone and everyone.

We received this book as a gift and we're so excited to read it simply because the title is hilarious and such a funny concept! Our son is 9 months old and we read books with him every night. He LOVED this book. Not because he could understand it (we parents loved it because of how fun-loving and silly it is), but because of the fun illustration. He was literally bouncing up and down and waving his hands around while we read it to him. I would HIGHLY recommend this cute children's book. It's different than anything else out there and such a fun read.

Are you ready for a good escape and enjoy a hot and steamy romance story?

Curtis has to fulfill his destiny. It's impossible to escape his past and what he's supposed to be - the alpha wolf. Curtis is expected to find a pure bred mate to advance the lineage. It's too bad all Curtis can think of is the curvy minx who’s supposed to be finding him that mate. If he can't control his feelings then he'll disgrace his pack and be forced out of his alpha title. Will he rise to power as the alpha of his pack or deny it all to mate with a half-bred who has his passion? Christy knows she will find love one day, but as a half breed she knows it won't be with one of the alphas she matches. Her job is to meet them and find them a purebred mate. Curtis is one of those shirtless cowboys that it hurts to look at because they're so beautiful. Certain death waits for a half breed that loves an alpha, but his pull is strong. How will she resist the pull of an alpha who desperately wants to mate with her despite the blood in her veins? WARNING: This book includes tasteful and hot adult scenes. Adults Only.
