2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. COVENANT (I was given a free copy by the author to read and review) By SHEILA R BEITLER COVENANT wasted no time picking up where THE RIFT left off. With just enough back story to get the reader up to speed, the likable characters take you right into the struggles they experience in the battle of what they thought was right and a different view of wrong. So much has been turned on a dime for these young people. This second of 3 in the RIFT saga series is a non-stop, hard-to-put-down story that is a satisfying read. I think you'll like it as much as I did.

Great story development, Strong editing, and a few Twists By World Traveler I was allowed to download this book for free in exchange for my review.This is the second book in the Rift Saga and it picks up seamlessly where the previous book left off. There is further development of the characters from the first book as well as introduction of new characters. There is quite a bit of back-story behind how the people of Earth found themselves in their present situation. I enjoyed learning the history of the Moon people and how they came to power. This book has less action and excitement than the previous book, though it does have some twists and turns that, while unexpected, made perfect sense in the story.The author uses his signature style of telling the story from the point of view of several characters, jumping from one to another along roughly the same timeline to advance the story. This helps tell the story in greater detail than having just one point of view from one character, and this is one of the many aspects of the author’s writing that I admire.This author’s writing usually grabs my attention and refuses to let it go until I have finished the story. I gave this book 4 stars because there were times that I found my attention wandering. I stuck with the story through the slower bits, and was rewarded with the twists and turns previously mentioned. Now I am finished with the book and am eagerly awaiting the next book to continue to the story.For those that are bothered by the terrible editing that is often found in e-books these days, fear not! The editing is much higher quality than I have seen in many books recently, with only occasional minor errors scattered throughout, but nothing that ruins the flow of the story or makes it frustrating to read.Although enjoyment of this book does not necessitate having read the previous book in the Rift Saga, I would encourage the reader to do so because it was another excellent book. I also recommend the Exodus trilogy by this same author. You really can’t go wrong with anything this author has written.

Disclaimer: I was given a free copy by the author to read and review.I've been reading Christensen since I discovered the Exodus series. I really enjoy his clean prose and well-edited work. He's created his own alternate universe à la Foundation and Dune. With a sweeping scope for his stories, the author has built a strong base for many more interesting tales.Covenant is book two in the Rift series taking place several hundred years after the Earth was decimated by an asteroid. Read the short story Alive to get an idea of what the moment of impact was like. Covenant tells the story of political intrigue, societal challenges from the disaster, and the solutions people came up with to survive. In Book Two we follow several characters as they navigate through these challenges.The science is believable and not overdone while leaving plenty of room for character development and story-telling. This is the kind of science fiction I enjoy. If there is one negative at all in the Rift series, it would be that there is so much opportunity to dwell in each period and location developing the characters that I find the reader is jumped ahead too frequently to the next scenario or timeframe. It would make the story longer, but I think I would enjoy spending more time in each scene exploring the character interactions, conflicts, and solutions. However, with a canvas as large as the galaxy and centuries of time, I can understand the need to move along and not dwell too long in each location and time.All-in-all, a great read, and now I'm chomping at the bit for Book Three!

By Avonna The Pocket Essential Agatha Christie by Mark Campbell is a useful short book for an introduction to Agatha Christie’s life and all of her works. For those of us who love Agatha Christie and want to check to see if we have read everything about Hercule Poirot, Miss Marple or one of her plays, this book is a great reference. It also includes her romances written under her Mary Westmacott pseudonym.This book is what it says it is, a pocket essential, short and to the point. I find it useful to remind me of a favorite story or to chronologically read her works. Fostering mutual understanding by viewing religion from an outsider perspective

Depending on how one defines religion, there are at least thousands of religions in the world. Given such religious diversity, how can any one religion claim to know the truth? Nothing proposed so far has helped us settle which of these religions, if any, are true - until now.

Author John W. Loftus, a former minister turned atheist, argues we would all be better off if we viewed any religion - including our own - from the informed skepticism of an outsider, a nonbeliever. For this reason, he has devised "the outsider test for faith". He describes it as a variation on the Golden Rule: "Do unto your own faith what you do to other faiths." Essentially, this means applying the same skepticism to our own beliefs as we do to the beliefs of other faiths. Loftus notes that research from psychology, anthropology, sociology, and neuroscience goes a long way toward explaining why the human race has produced so many belief systems, why religion is culturally dependent, and how religion evolved in the first place. It's important that people understand these findings to escape the dangerous delusion that any one religion represents the only truth.

At a time when the vast diversity of human belief systems is accessible to all, the outsider test for faith offers a rational means for fostering mutual understanding.

Extremely Well Done By Book Fanatic I had high hopes for this book based upon the reviews and blurbs, but I can't say my expectations were all that high. I had read Loftus' previous writings on the OTF and I wasn't sure a book length treatment would be all that valuable. I was wrong. This is an excellent book and its thesis is presented and defended very well.My own ideas about religious faith were formed decades ago based upon my own thoughts and what I read from others. It was the rather simple and obvious idea that where evidence was sufficient faith was not necessary and where faith was necessary there was no criteria to determine truth. Faith allows anyone to believe virtually anything regardless of the evidence. Thereby we get the religious diversity which receives such good treatment by Loftus.The OTF is a clearly articulated and much expanded version of this simple idea. This may seem unfair to Loftus, but it is my interpretation. That's not to say his much expanded articulation of all this is not valuable, because as I indicated it is. He has done an marvelous job in this book of doing just that. That is why in my opinion it merits five stars. I've read a ton of books and this one is definitely now on my favorites list.I do have one hesitation and it is the hesitation I have on almost all comprehensive treatments of what I consider simple ideas. They risk obscuring the forest with all the trees and they provide opponents the opportunity to bark at the the trees. On the comment thread of one opponent's review you see that very accusation of "nit picking". That is true, but it is what one should expect. Loftus, by providing a comprehensive treatment, has provided tons of trees for people who don't agree with his conclusion to use to obscure what is at basis a simple and I think unassailable idea.I could also nitpick a few other things I didn't like about this book, but that would be doing a disservice to the central idea. So, for those of us able to keep our eyes on the main thrust, these kind of comprehensive treatments are valuable.I ask any potential reader to simply read the book. Compare the quality of thought and argument in the book with the quality and thought and argument of the theists you find in the comment threads here. The best advertisement for the skeptical approach is the writing of the skeptics compared with the writing of the believers.The believers don't want you to read it. The skeptics are happy for you to read both sides and make up your own minds.I have given 5 star recommendations to books with which I completely disagree with as far as conclusions, but appreciate the rigor of thought and argument. In this case I appreciate the latter and agree with the conclusions as well. Well done and highly recommended.

Lindsay, Ph.D. There's an obvious problem for every religion in the world today, and a rapidly increasing number of people know about it. Many recognize it, and many ignore it. The fact of the matter is that there are many conflicting world religions at present, and most of them individually claim not only to be true but to be the only truth. John W. Loftus summarizes this problem neatly by pointing out the religious diversity and cultural dependence facets of how religions are accepted and believed throughout the world, and he asks the question of what we can possibly do about it. Each faith claims that it is true and the others are, in varying degrees, mistaken, false, or heretical, and major societal problems erupt as a result. The answer to this question, as given by Loftus here, is the title of this wonderful book: The Outsider Test for Faith. It is a silver bullet argument for understanding how to grapple with the religious diversity of our world and how to answer the central question raised by it: How can we know which religion, if any, is true?Loftus does an excellent job here explaining the Outsider Test for Faith (OTF) for his intended audiences, and he does a similarly excellent job at defending it against the rather outlandish attacks presented to the test itself by religious apologists--notable and not so notable--who expose themselves by arguing against it in the first place! The OTF simply asks us to look at our religiously held beliefs as an outsider would if we want to determine if they are true or not, and yet contemporary apologists (primarily evangelical Christian apologists) rail against this simple, honest request and try to undermine its integrity. Loftus handles these embarrassing objections nicely, showing them far more patience and consideration than many of them deserve.To really make this review helpful, I want to point out that I feel the book really has two intended groups as audiences. First, there are religious believers in some faith traditions, and second there are atheists. Both groups should engage this book, but for very different reasons.For the believers: This book presents itself as a test for determining which religion is true. Specifically, it sets out to engage readers on the question of the distribution of world faiths, asking them to look at their faith as would an outsider. This removes the double standard and allows believers their one shot at strengthening their faith-based claims in an increasingly secular world. Every believer today owes it to himself or herself, as well as to his or her faith community, to engage Loftus's arguments openly and honestly. It is a total game-changer.For the non-believers: This book is well-written; it is passionate; it is important; it is engaging; and it is surprising. It's well worth the relatively short read and a lot of consideration. It's a silver-bullet argument on its central theme: which religion is true? None of them! Get it; read it; and press the OTF out into the world where it can do some good. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in discussions about religious faith.That's it, then: Get it; read it; and press the OTF out into the world where it can do some good!

This is the most well developed book so far. The characters are more developed and multidimensional. The main character, Connor, is a witty, wise-cracking teenager. (Reminds me of Peter Parker's Spiderman) As the author's writing has matured, so has Connor's character.There are so many surprises with twists and turns. In this novel you will get much needed info on the The Battle and first wave of metas. There is also the beginnings of a great back story to the origins of the metabands, Midnight (favorite of mine due to his Batman qualities) and Connor and Derrik's parents who were killed during first wave great battle.Easy, smooth read with wit and humor that makes it that much more enjoyable. Love this series and hoping it goes on for more than 4 or 5 books.

I am already anticipating the 4th. The villains in rise of circle are awesome. They seem undefeatable. I would have loved omni to discover their secret or at least follow midnight through his discovery of their secret. It was a little convenient that midnight happened to know how their powers work and there "isn't time to explain" there were a few times where I felt like I was charged the back story of developments. But I'm willing to move past this because the book was otherwise super fun to read.

By The Book Miner As stated above, if you liked Meta 1 & 2 you'll like Meta 3 as well.No more Lone Ranger for Conner, now he has many, many metas to help him. This happens because Conner starts a new school that is a front for young metas who need training.Complaints, a few, are not as much action as in previous books. Also I feel as if a lot of loose ends are left, well loose. Early conflicts with classmates are never resolved. Editing is shoddy at times.

I am so, so glad that I didn’t!!! Penelope Wilde is a genius. I mean a true off the IQ chart genius. She listened to her mother growing up and didn’t display her abilities while at school so she was never a target.Then right before her 25th birthday, she gets a visit from her father. A man she had never met. The surprising thing was her father is none other than Sherlock Holmes… Yes, that Sherlock Holmes. The one from the 1880’s. Only he isn’t just that figment of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s imagination. He is a time traveling genius who developed a cure for death. Yes, he is immortal. He isn’t the only one either. It turns out that Watson and Penelope’s mom are immortal. In fact,​ Penelope’s mom has been taking a potion to make herself look older so no questions would be asked. Then Penelope finds out that on her 25th birthday she will become immortal as well.She has to give up everything that she has worked hard for because now that she’s immortal, she’s in danger. Someone wants to get their hands on the serum that makes one immortal and will go to any length to get it.This book was slow to start but it definitely picks up and takes off. I am very intrigued with this storyline and can’t wait to see what the next book brings.If you like time travel, action, and romance, then I recommend this book! Reviewed by Cryssy

I absolutely LOVED the use of the characters and their interactions with one another. I was a little confused at the beginning, but caught on to what was going on quickly. The immortality makes sense with the way it came about, and I found the science behind it to be very interesting. The only thing I didn't like was that it didn't feel long enough. I needed to know more immediately! I'll certainly be keeping a close eye on this series, I can't delve into the next one quick enough!

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. A fantasy epic to remember By Kelly Matthews Yes, it's like 500 pages long, and yes, it took about two chapters to get into it. But, really, it's like three books in one and that makes for a fantastic trilogy.I read CRIMSON over the course of two and a half days and lost quite a bit of sleep to it. The characters are richly written and you understand their internal struggles as well as the external ones. Trevin is a conflicted prince who is a sorcerer and who is too young when he has to take over his kingdom. Add to that the pressure of his grandfather's reign being known as the Golden age and his father's as the Silver. What kind of pressure is that, how can he avoid the curse and live up to the previous generations of his family's rule? Nuevia is his Queen, his sanity and his savior. She is smart, sweet and kind of sassy. But my favorite character was Nils Ramesis, a sailor with a hidden past and something to prove.I hate reviews that give away spoilers, so I can't tell you everything I wish I could. The creatures here are terrifying. Neuvia is kind of like Snow White, friend to the animals. Pig is a creepy little dude. The battles in book three are so well-written you can see them. There are even two endings. I really liked that. Just, Wow! Get it, you will enjoy it.

What makes this novel unique is that this magic, and the protagonist's self doubt, ultimately imperils the character and his kingdom. Meanwhile, brave men and women of the non-magical world take matters into their own hands, doing what they can to save the world. In the end, one is led to consider what is more admirable- mastering magic or mastering human skills.In the book I noticed great care was taken to develop the virtues and vices of this novel's heroes and villains, which made it for me a more rewarding and intellectually stimulating fantasy novel than most I've read.I think readers should give the novel a bit of time - for the first few chapters I was trying to get my bearings in terms of understanding this magical world and its characters. (Incidentally, in my Kindle edition, a map was missing from the front of the book, but was instead on the last page). My favorite characters came into full focus in the second half of the book, where one particular voyage becomes nearly a book within this book.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Unique Adventure By Johnna As the other's have said, this was an epic adventure story with a magical twist. I also found it a little difficult to get into at first, but only because I was trying to figure out the layout and what the deal was with the main character. He was a bit fickle, which drove me crazy, but I had to remember he was a teenager when this epic starts. You know, if kids would just listen to their parents... Anyway, I really liked the people, and the monsters were fantastic and horrifying all at the same time. The flow of the story was really cool, because it changes up, it is almost like little stories tied together in a big story. You don't get bored with it taking place in only one place. (There is even an alternate world) And it was unique, there were so many different ideas and actions, with an overall, tie-it-together love story, that only bordered on sappy :) I really enjoyed it, couldn't stand when I had to put it down. As mentioned before, you can't say too much without giving the story away, and that would be no fun. Give it a go, you won't be sorry.

Great writing in this fast-paced story of adventure and dragons.Under the Ice Blades is a fast-paced read, but it’s not just mindless action. The book has just the right mix of descriptions, action, and character development. The developing romance between Angulus and Kaika is portrayed very well, and it was fun getting in both their heads to experience their conflicted thoughts about each other.It’s a shorter book than the others in the series, but the plot has some nice twists. The writing is really good. I wish that all authors wrote this well.This book is obviously the starting point to more adventures with dragons.As with all of Lindsay Buroker’s books, you really need to read the epilogue. :-)

Let's just say an unexpected and totally wonderful liason forms. Two people who really, really need each other and when they figure it out - wow!!All the characters we have come to know and love and cheer for are in it. Trouble is afoot in a secret weapons development site and much to everyone's consternation, the King himself is going to head the team that goes to check out what's going wrong.Mayhem, magic, dragons and sexual tension abound - just what we love about Lindsay's books. I'd give her books 10 stars if amazon would let me.

I mean c’mon how could you not with dragons, magic, dog fights/fighter pilots, and loveable and funny characters?I was rooting for this pairing to happen while reading the series. Kaika and Angulus, together, are a perfect match. I can't wait until Raptor comes out, though I wonder if it will top the awesomeness that was The Blade's Memory. I have faith that it will be its own brand of awesome despite this. I have yet to meet a Buroker book that I don’t like.
