She was funny and awkward. She was great. Her character really added to the story. I Know this is a book about her and her crazy life but not completely. It's a great book about all of them.Have you listened to any of Madeline Mrozek’s other performances before? How does this one compare?I have never listen to Madeline Mrozek's performances before. I was actually disappointed that she didn't have any more titles that were appealing. SHE IS AMAZING! This book benefited from a talented person like Madeline. The book was strong and original but the narration added the cherry and sprinkles to the top of the cake.If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?I am not good with tag lines. However, if it was made into a movie I would watch it!Any additional comments? The first story was hard to complete. I got better about 3/4 of the way. STICK WITH IT... you will be rewarded with a fantastic and original story. Loved this trilogy and really sad to say good bye.

"Where Goodman's book shines is the foldout maps and diagrams of the voyages and in the journal entries by Hudson and members of his crew ... When the next group of students with an assignment on explorers descends on the library, have this useful and attractive resource on hand." --School Library Journal

Beyond the Sea of Ice: The Voyages of Henry Hudson takes readers into a land of impenetrable fog and crushing ice, a mysterious place where lie the dreams of kings, merchants and learned geographers--a passage to the Orient.

Sailing small wooden boats well above the Arctic Circle, guided by maps and charts that were based on rumor and hope as much as fact, and surrounded by crews that shared neither his belief nor his commitment, Henry Hudson searched again and again for what was not there. In 1611, his mutinous crew set him adrift on the freezing waters of the bay that would one day bear his name.

Beyond the Sea of Ice is the story of Henry Hudson's four harrowing voyages of discovery. Bringing the skills of an experienced novelist, Goodman creates an epic narrative of Henry Hudson's passionate quest. Fernando Rangel's paintings capture the icy beauty of the North Atlantic, the lushness of the new world and the cruelty and death that accompanied a doomed voyage of discovery.

Actual entries from the journals of each voyage bring the reader directly into life at sea in the 17th century, and Mikaya Press' exclusive gatefold Read-Along Map™ allows the reader to read about the explorer's travels while following them on a map at the same time.

Beyond the Sea of Ice: The Voyages of Henry Hudson (Great Explorers), by Joan Goodman

From School Library Journal Grade 4-7-The English explorer who searched in vain for a "speedy" route to China is brought to light. Readers will learn about Hudson the man, some details about each of his four voyages to North America, and what traveling by sea in the 17th century entailed. The prevailing cruelty inflicted on Native Americans may be upsetting to some readers, but Goodman has reported faithfully the encounters of the English with them. In an appended note, she explains that she used the word "Indian" to refer to the people of North America because that is the word the explorer used. Rangel's full-page, sometimes somber paintings are reminiscent of Marcia Sewall's work in the Pilgrims of Plimoth (Atheneum, 1986). Where Goodman's book shines is in the foldout maps and diagrams of the voyages and in the journal entries by Hudson and members of his crews. The endpapers, borders, and details such as the page numbers encapsulated in a rising sun symbol add to the book's visual appeal. When the next group of students with an assignment on explorers descends on the library, have this useful and attractive resource on hand.Mollie Bynum, formerly at Chester Valley Elementary School, Anchorage, AK Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist This attractive volume from the Great Explorers Books series begins with an introduction that sets the stage for the Age of Exploration and Hudson's part in it. A foldout map indicating the routes of Hudson's four voyages of exploration extends beyond the pages, making it accessible to readers as they follow his story through the text. Each chapter focuses on one voyage, including its sponsors, purpose, difficulties (sometimes calamities), and its outcome. Full-page, bordered paintings provide dramatic visions of events, while small ink drawings and maps are also effective. An introduction to Hudson's voyages that will spark readers' interest. 4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Nicely illustrated. Good text, but more advanced than most illustrated books By HeatherHH The main thing that I want to make clear in this review is the target audience. This is a nicely illustrated account of Hudson's voyages, but the fact that it is illustrated may mislead some into thinking it is for younger children. The reading level of this book is middle school; a Flesch-Kincaid grade level based on four paragraphs rated it as a 7th grade reading level. It's a very well-written text, with rich, descriptive language, but it is for more advanced readers. In fact, it is in-depth enough for high school students, as long as they won't be offended by the illustrations. The illustrations make the text more engaging, especially for the visual learner. My 9-year-old reads on a high school level and enjoys non-fiction. He said that he would rate this book as 4 1/2 stars.Elementary children, especially upper elementary students, may be interested in this book as a read-aloud. I read it with my 7 1/2-year-old and 6-year-old in two parts, providing plenty of explanations as we went along. They were able to learn some from it, but it was definitely somewhat over their heads. I'm sure they will get much more from it in a few years, but we were studying the explorers now.The text begins with a few pages of background, explaining the reason for searching for an ocean part to the Far East, the demand for spices, etc. There's a nice map of all of Hudson's Voyages. It folds out, and if left unfolded, it sticks out to the side and is a handy reference as you read through each of Hudson's voyages. Most 2-page spreads have several paragraphs of text and 1 full page color illustration, though some spreads only have a partial page map.I would highly recommend this book for homeschooling families or parents of school children studying the explorers. For independent reading, it's best suited for middle school and high school age. For elementary students, it may be appropriate as a read-aloud.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. As Much A Story of Folly as Exploration By Marco Antonio Abarca Henry Hudson falls into the second rank of great explorers. We know his name today principally because his last name graces the Hudson River and Hudson's Bay. Yet unlike the first tier of great explorers, Henry Hudson never really experienced success. The Northwest passage to Asia was not discovered until the Twentieth Century. Indeed Hudson ended his last expedition abandoned by his crew along the desolate shores of Hudson's Bay. "Beyond the Bay" is as much a story of folly as it is a tale of exploration. The book is well written and gives the reader a good sense of just how large and unknown America was at the time of Hudson's expeditions. Also of note, the author does not sugar coat Hudson's story. He is presented warts and all to young readers. In the final analysis this is a good book about a second tier explorer.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Very High Quality By Lisa Munson Crews This is a well written, engaging and thorough account of Henry Hudson's travels. The art is a good as the writing. We used it to lay the groundwork for our study of the history of Dutch influence on American civics and the colonies in North America. It's definitely worth spending part of your homeschooling budget on this book.

You May Just Be a Dinosaur, by Heather Macht

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 2-This introduction to dinosaurs mixes facts with a bit of silliness. Macht poses fun questions, such as "Do none of the clothes in your closet fit?" and "Do the plates down your back make your shirt and pants split?" Each set of queries ends with a "Fun Fact" sidebar that provides information on a particular dinosaur. Seven species, from T. rex to Microraptor, are covered. The proposed scenarios will generate giggles, and the illustrations have a gentle, cartoonish look. Each sidebar also contains a more realistic, scientific drawing. VERDICT A serviceable option that will appeal to dino-crazy readers.-Laura Stanfield, Campbell County Public Library, Fort Thomas, KYα(c) Copyright 2011. I wasn't sure what to think when I started reading my free advance copy of Risen Gods, the first collaboration between authors J.F. Penn and J. Thorn, but, the time I was one chapter in, I was hooked. As a big fan of J.F. Penn's ARKANE series and someone who's been reading her books since the very beginning, I was a bit skeptical of this seeming change of direction for Ms. Penn, but Risen Gods turned out to be every bit as good as her earlier works, if not better. I've always loved the way Joanna can make a scene come to life in my mind as a reader and this book didn't disappoint. While I'm not as familiar with the works of J. Thorn, Risen Gods was so well written that you'd think they've been working together for years. The story kept me enthralled from digital cover to cover and now I can hardly remember the reasons for my skepticism. Whether you're a fan of either author or not, or whether you've read anything by either author or not, this book will make you want to come back for more. Now if I can only convince my wife we need to take our next vacation in New Zealand!

Great Supernatural thriller set in New Zealand By Godiva 2000 This book is set in New Zealand, and starts with the 2 main characters (Ben & Lucy) being caught in a tsunami which strikes the coast of South Island, causing huge damage to the coast. This tsunami was apparently caused by an underwater earthquake, but as the story unfolds it becomes apparent that there is a more supernatural cause, the ancient gods of the Maori people.Ben, who is a Maori and Lucy, a white New Zealander, are separated and each comes in to possession of an amulet. These amulets need to be bought together and offered as a sacrifice to appease the gods and save the whole of New Zealand. There is a nice symmetry that Ben gets assistance from a white girl called Gina, and Lucy ties up with a Maori called Rangi. Both pairs face edge-of-the-seat adventures as they head north and finally come together for the final push to the place where they must offer the amulets.I have read all of Joanna Penn's books, but am not familiar with J. Thorn's work (yet), so can't comment on how this compares to his other work. But this book certainly won't disappoint Joanna's fans, as it contains her usual mix of great characters, fantastic plot, with the usual dark moments, evocative descriptions of locations and huge amounts of research. I have a working knowledge of Norse and Greek mythology, but didn't realise that the Maori mythology was so rich, it has inspired me to find out more.Overall a great book which I enjoyed so much that I managed to finish it in double quick time, as I found it so difficult to put down. If there is one, very small criticism, it is that the glossary of Maori words is at the back, it would be useful if it was at the front so that it is more obvious.I did receive a free advance copy of this in return for an honest review, but I liked it so much that I bought it anyway!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A fantasy set in New Zealand with Maori gods! Awesome! By Diana in SC I initially bought the ebook, and then I won a free copy of the audiobook from one of the authors in return for an honest review. First, I want to comment on the narration. The narrator did a good, solid performance with really good pacing and excellent pronunciation of unusual Maori words. He has a pleasant, slightly gravelly voice. I have one minor complaint that when he is not doing characters' voices he sometimes sounds a too clinical and slightly monotone as if he is reading the nightly news. He does not attempt any New Zealand accents (he sounds American all the time), but I was fine with that. He is as good at women's voices as he is with men's, and he differentiates various characters' voices well. In addiction, the production was almost always very good. However, once in a while, I can tell there are one-sentence-long sections that I can tell were recorded later in a different location that has an unpleasant echo. This book is an imaginative thrill ride that I loved. It is a natural disaster story mixed with thrilling action and fascinating fantasy based on the religion of the Maori, the native New Zealand culture. If, like me, you love Neil Gaiman's "American Gods", then try this action-packed novella-length story of several people trying to save New Zealand after the sleeping Gods rise up and cause all kinds of natural disasters. There are earthquakes, a tsunami, volcanic eruptions, and storms! It is also a cool travelog of all the most famous places in New Zealand from Auckland all the way to the far northern tip. Unlike crappy action movies, the action in this book makes sense, and the characters' escapes from death sound plausible to me. FYI, there are no sex scenes, but I would rate it PG-13 or R because of some bloody injuries and some occasional chilling violence. Thankfully, there are no love triangles and very little romance. This is a highly enjoyable fantasy novella and audiobook. I have told all of my finds who like fantasy that they really need to try it.

She couldn't wait to get the next book when she was finished with one... Which thrilled me... Because she isn't one to just sit and read unless she really loves the book.. So to find a whole series was great!!
