The Smart Woman's Guide to Planning for Retirement: How to Save for Your Future Today, by Mary Hunt

From Booklist “According to a 2012 survey, 92 percent of women of all ages in the United States don’t feel they know enough to reach their retirement savings goals.” So states columnist Hunt in her “different kind of book,” which eliminates jargon while presenting facts and motivation for women of all ages to manage their future retirement planning. The best way to prepare for retirement is for a woman to take care of herself and her money every day. (Hunt refers to the reader as “you” but considers the reference to be plural, depending on marital status.) She presents six important strategies for her retirement savings plan, which include developing a money management system, building an emergency fund, getting out of debt, maximizing retirement accounts, owning your home outright, and building a personal investment portfolio. Hunt concludes there is more to retirement than just money and emphasizes good health, relationships, and meaningful activities. Important information for a wide range of library patrons, including a valuable glossary of financial terms. --Mary Whaley

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. "Just the facts and motivation you need, in a warm and conversational way" By Mike Piper Admittedly, as a male (and a nonreligious one at that), I'm not exactly a part of this book's target market. Still, given how much I've enjoyed Hunt's writing in other places, I figured I should give this book a go as well. I wasn't disappointed. In the introduction, Mary writes, "I think women need a different kind of book, one without all the jargon, charts, and mind-numbing data, one that simply and honestly cuts through the complicated information that’s out there and provides just the facts and motivation they need in a warm and conversational way— the way we’d chat over coffee about something that is very important to both of us."Mission accomplished. That's exactly what this book is.**The book covers a wide range of topics, from budgeting, to home ownership, to paying down debt, to investing. One of my favorite sections was the chapter on choosing a financial advisor. Hunt gives very helpful warnings about some of the pitfalls you'll want to be sure to avoid.I also especially enjoyed the discussion of paying for your children's education. It's a bit of a "tough love" message, but that's what many people need. Most families simply cannot afford to send each of their children to four (or more!) years of private university education, while still saving sufficiently for retirement.**As a side note, if you're the spreadsheet-loving type who *does* enjoy charts, data, and technical details, I highly recommend a book by another smart woman: Control Your Retirement Destiny by Dana Anspach.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A retirement planning must!! By midlifemusingsmom The Smart Woman's Guide to Planning for Retirement, is a helpful `how to' guide for planning for retirement. The book is based on six strategies for getting on track to a successful financially secure retirement: Develop a money management system Build an emergency fund Get out of debt Maximize your retirement accounts Own you home outright Build your personal investment portfolioMary takes you through all six strategies and shows you how to make the most of each one. I was delighted to find a bunch of NEW information that I didn't know, and some great practical advice on how to get started if you are, ahem, a bit closer to retirement than you'd like. This book will help you get prepared for retirement no matter how old you are, how much money you saved or haven't saved, or if you make very little in way of salary. The six strategies will help you get in the best possible position you can be in for retirement. Although this book is based on the six strategies, there are chapters that cover how much you'll need in retirement, social security, savings accounts with the highest interest amounts and investment strategies that ANYONE can do.A must read for anyone wanting to prepare for retirement!!

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Smart Guide for Smart Women By ruthjoec Unfortunately, this is not the book that is going to tell you how you can live it up today and still manage to have money in the future. It is another one of those control your expenses and save your money books. While aimed at women, it has advice that both men and women should follow. Mary Hunt recommends getting out of debt, saving regularly, buying half the house you can afford and paying the house off early. She recommends maxing out your Roth IRA before putting more money than necessary to gain an employer match in a 401k plan because of the high fees associated with 401k plans. While most of the book will appeal to anyone looking for a basic financial planning information. However, there is one chapter that discusses financial planning in relation to the Bible, particularly as it relates to the parable of the talents. There are also small references to God in other places in the book. If you are looking for a book that honors Christian religious beliefs while discussing financial planning, this may appeal to you.In general the book is short, easy to read, and is written in a conversational style. It manages to convey basic information without assuming the reader is stupid.I'd like to thank the publisher for providing a complimentary review copy. Grade: B."Available November 2013 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group."

This has been a complex story arc over six books which draws to an epic and fabulous conclusion. And I ask myself how it is that, despite having given us 16 (yep 16) books with Sienna Nealon in them, the writing isn't jaded, and the plot lines fresh. And he still manages to throw in a surprise (or 20) .I sit here, along for the ride, and loving every single minute. This is, I think, the best yet in the series. I don't want to say more for fear of #spoilers. But. In case you didn't already know it, Sienna is a bad ass. BAD ASS I tell you.I received a copy in exchange for an honest review.

Howard There is nothing better than opening your Kindle and finding that your next Robert Crane novel has arrived. You find yourself contemplating taking the day off, so you can answer the questions from the previous book. Vengeful is yet another success in the continuing saga of Sienna, the Girl in the Box and now Out of the Box. Robert Crane does not disappoint as he continues the suspense and excitement of the next installment in The Girl Out of the Box series. As with the earlier installments in this series, you find yourself thinking you know where he is going with the story line when suddenly he hits you out of left field and you can’t help but be impressed. You find yourself both frustrated and enthused with his expertise in storytelling. He truly does think out the box as he directs you exactly where he wants you to be. Well worth the read and leaves you eagerly anticipating and wondering what he might come up with in the next book and counting the days until it is available (February 17th). Just as with his Sanctuary series, his excellence in weaving a compelling story shines through and the reader can only sit back and enjoy the ride.

She enjoyed all of the puppy photographs that went along with the story as well as being able to read it herself. Both short stories had a clear lesson that was easy to follow. There is also a bonus video audiobook that also put a smile on my daughter's face. Francois Bissonnette's book is perfect for beginning readers and story lovers who like animal stories. It's age-appropriate and appealing to the eye. More animal stories please!

Bear and Squirrel Are Friends . . . Yes, Really!, by Deb Pilutti

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—In this gently teasing picture book, Bear and Squirrel are unusual friends who help each other out. Bear shakes trees so that acorns fall down for Squirrel, and Squirrel helps Bear with some household dusting, but they also play games and have fun together. The other bears and squirrels don't get it—the other bears think Squirrel would be a great snack, and Squirrel's friends worry he'll get eaten. After a long winter of hibernation, Bear awakens and sees Squirrel as a cupcake, and tells Squirrel how delicious he looks. After a few ambiguous and terrifying moments where Bear declares that he can't resist, readers learn that Bear has eaten the blueberry pancakes Squirrel has made without saving any. Bear and Squirrel's friendship is sweet and endearing, but their story is also full of humor, such as when Bear uses Squirrel's tail as a feather duster, Bear's dream bubbles show sandwiches and pizza, and he literally sees Squirrel as a cupcake. The clear, simple illustrations are drawn in muted pastels. Children will laugh at the story and perhaps even learn about being a good friend. VERDICT A general purchase for most library collections.—Liz Anderson, D.C. Public Library

Review They might look very different, but Bear and Squirrel are friends. They both like to gather blueberries and acorns for supper. Bear helps Squirrel build his home in a tree. Squirrel helps Bear keep his den clean (fluffy tails make great dusters). And both of them enjoy playing games. Squirrel's squirrel friends ask Squirrel if he is worried Bear might eat him for a snack. "Don't be silly!" Squirrel scoffs. Bear's friends suggest that Bear might find Squirrel a tasty snack. "That's ridiculous!" Then Bear settles in for a long winter nap, and his friend settles in to wait, knitting a prodigious scarf as he does so. When Bear finally wakes up, they're glad to see each other…but they seem different. Bear looks very toothy, and Squirrel—well, Squirrel looks delicious. To the starved Bear, Squirrel actually looks rather a lot like a cupcake. Bear just can't help himself. There's much chomping and chewing, and Bear apologizes…for eating all the pancakes. Whew. Graphic designer Pilutti presents an unconventional friendship tale in a mix of full-bleed and spot illustrations with a smattering of dialogue bubbles that fit seamlessly into the story. The muted palette and flat, cartoon style work well with the silly, affirmative tale. A nifty, expectation-defying read-aloud. (Kirkus July 15, 2015)Given the title, there’s no chance Bear would ever want to eat Squirrel, right? Just look at the way that Bear shakes acorns out of trees for Squirrel, and how Squirrel lets Bear use his bushy tail for a dust mop. Their friends, however, remain unconvinced. Squirrel’s fellow squirrels are horrified, while Bear’s pals savor fantasies of eating Squirrel in popcorn, in soup, or even in a sundae. Then comes the ultimate test: Bear goes into hibernation (Squirrel patiently knits a scarf that gets longer and longer) and wakes up feeling as hungry as, well, a bear. Can the friendship—and Squirrel—survive? With toylike drawings, sophisticated characterizations, and sly visual jokes, this very funny story tests and tickles readers’ faith in unlikely friendships before ending up right where it should, thanks to a little narrative misdirection and a Squirrel who knows his friend all too well. Yes, Pilutti (Ten Rules of Being a Superhero) is messing with her audience’s minds, but they won’t mind one bit. (Publishers Weekly July 6, 2015)In this gently teasing picture book, Bear and Squirrelare unusual friends who help each other out. The clear, simpleillustrations are drawn in muted pastels. Children will laugh at the story andperhaps even learn about being a good friend. (School Library Journal September 2015)This comical take on an unusual friendship offers lessons in resisting peer pressure and temptation. The story starts by acknowledging that bears will sometimes eat squirrels. But this particular Bear and Squirrel, first shown exchanging a blueberry and an acorn, are friends. They have fun together, chatting on tree trunks or playing hide-and-seek in the forest (though Bear is pretty easy to spot). They help each other out—Squirrel uses his tail to sweep Bear’s den; Bear shakes trees till acorns fall down. But the other bears think Bear is missing out on a tasty snack, and the squirrels think Squirrel is playing around with a killer. The big test comes after Bear wakes up from hibernation and sees Squirrel as a delicious cupcake. Gouache illustrations in gentle colors soften the somewhat scary premise and keep humor at the fore. Readers will love the suspense of the final pages, the resolution of which is a resounding endorsement for friendship through thick and thin (and hunger). (Booklist Online August 31, 2015)

The author uses a rather muted color palette, smart design choices and cartoon-like characters to tell a story that is filled with moments of sly humor. I've been reading this story to various groups of preschoolers all week with great success. The author builds suspense as she leads us through a description of this rather unorthodox friendship, bear's hibernation, and bear's great hunger when he wakes. Will he eat his friend? That's the question that will engage any story time audience, as they can see where this is going from early on. I heard whispered questions as they eagerly waited for me to turn the page. That's great story time stuff! This picture book is wonderfully paced, very well written and filled with enough small details to guarantee lots of requests for repeat reads. No worries, all ends well and the power of friendship is once again reinforced. A surprisingly light and whimsical take on the typical hibernation theme and an enthusiastic recommend.

Dragon treasure that could be anything, should be something treasured by the heart. I don't do reviews that give everything away, because I want you to experience the book for yourself, but it touched something in me, which is what a wonderful book does. I was hooked on this author from the first book of hers I read and I have stalked her since! This, however, drew me in with the friendships that were made and the way the love between two main characters grew. Well crafted, and I wand some seaglass for myself as a treasure now!

Saving the Dragons inside By Kristy Heinicke I received an ARC of 'The Dragons" from the author, in exchange for an honest review.I was excited to start reading 'The Dragons' as I absolutely FLOVE Delphina's "B3" series. 'The Dragons' is book 4 of the "Dynamis in New Orleans" series, a multi author collaboration. I haven't read any of the other books in this series so far, but really got into this story & would love to read them, when I get the time too. 'The Dragons' tells a tale of finding true love and the sacrifice one is prepared to make to keep what you love safe. Adeen grows up knowing her purpose in life, her clan propares her for that, then a after dream she to New Orleans, where she meets some unique paranormals.
