On the run . . . It’s been four months since the head of the Institute of Supernatural Research was murdered. But that doesn’t mean June Coffin is out of hiding yet. In a world where being different can get you killed, it’s best to keep a low profile. Especially for a Siren who can control other people with the call of her voice. That goes double if your powers might be inexplicably growing…   On the hunt . . . But June isn’t the only one trying to clear her name. There’s Sam, the charismatic paranormal rights leader, and Micha, the first human on record to go paranormal. All of them must bargain with a mysterious vampire named Occam Reed if they want to stay alive.   Out of time . . . As tensions increase between humans and paranormals, June must decide who to trust. If only she could hear the song inside her heart…

Intense By The Romance Reviews Reviewed by LiaLfor TheRomanceReviews.comOur tattooed, foul-mouthed Siren is back with this great follow-up to The Wicked City. Jane is known for many things but patience is not one of them. She is sick of hiding out. They all are tired of waiting to see what vicious attack will be next. Risks will have to be taken to try to combat the hate and violence that is corrupting the city of Chicago and only some of them will survive. You definitely need to read The Wicked City first before diving into the sequel. Megan Morgan has a lot of new experiences for the team and that doesn't leave a lot of time to catch up on the past. It keeps the pace moving fast even when the action is a little slower this time around.Jane is the Siren with lots of attitude. She hasn't changed much in terms of her attitude but is still dealing with the consequences of her injury. She has even given up cigarettes so you know how bad she really is doing physically, and giving up her addiction does not make her any more pleasant to be around. Everyone might be more in danger from an angry, bored Siren than Robbie. Jane is very worried about those she cares about and that worry is a heavy weight. There is more of an intensity about her in this second book than the first. She has really committed to the mission and it seems like she has accepted that she can't go back and resume her old life as a tattoo artist. She definitely tells less jokes than the first time around.Jane along with Sam, Muse and Micha have been hiding out for months waiting to see what to do next in their battle for the city against Robbie and his followers. Sam is a wanted man and Jane feels like she needs to stay and protect him like he did when she was in need. She is still physically involved with Micha but resists when he is referred to as her boyfriend by Sam. Jane and Sam have a pull towards one another but she is also confused by the nature of his relationship with Muse. It definitely falls under the label of "it's complicated". These attractions among the members of the group keep it interesting. This book introduces the Vampires of the city to the story and they are a big part of the action this time around. The author has an interesting view of vampires and they are definitely not the bright, sparkly type. They are arrogant, drug-addicted and smelly for the most part. One of them takes a big interest in Jane and she really didn't want another admirer or complication. The Vampires may be the only group strong enough to take on Robbie but they are pretty self-focused and not interested in being helpful unless it is in their interests. Some of them have interesting abilities and Jane begins to realize just how much of a threat they may be to her and the city. She also gets some revealing information about her future. It is an intense read with lots of surprises and changes. Jane and the gang face complications in their battle to get the city united against Robbie and the Institute. They are forced to turn to a new group for support but that group is perhaps even more dangerous than their current enemies. Feelings intensify and change for one another and that adds a new level of complexity to their situation. It is a great follow-up to the first book and this series is turning out to be a very intriguing read with lots of surprises to come.Disclaimer: A copy of this book is received from the publisher/author in exchange for an honest review.

I was hoping that I’d like this book just as much as the first one, but I loved this just as much, if not more!June and the gang have been in hiding for the last few months, and it isn’t sitting well with any of them. They want to take action, but with them being in hiding, it makes it hard for them to make any kind of move. Soon though things are starting to go too far, and they have no choice but to go to the Vampires to find some way to make an alliance with them. These vampires…. They are NOTHING like what you’ve read in other books. They are disgusting and apparently do drugs in their spare time (I mean, why not, they can’t die). However after putting June and a few others through a few tests (and also giving up Micha as a prize) they vampires form some kind of alliance with Sam and his followers. However, this story is just beginning.June has a few hard decisions she has to make. The question is, will she be able to survive the aftermath her decisions cause? Not only that, she’s caught the eye of a certain vampire and he’s determined to make her his.Talk about twists and turns! This book is full of them! You think you know where the story is going but oh no, Megan Morgan totally spins it in another direction. I loved every second of it though! She keeps you on your toes, and I can’t wait to see how she twists the story in the next book! I’m hoping that June is able to find a HEA, especially with everything she’s had to go through, but with Megan, it seems you’ll never know for sure. Amazon story Megan! I can’t wait to see what you have in store for June!**ARC was provided through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**

It was rather different. I did find the book to be a tad vulgar and have way to much sex and not enough actual story to it. I would have liked the characters to have had more depth to them. To be more complex and with a little less attitude with more to back it up. Ms. Morgan has a nice smooth writing style she just needs to put more into her characters. I did however like them enough to read more about them. At least one more book to see if there is any character growth.*** Received ARC copy of book from NetGally.com and Kensington Books. ****L.

In this tale of kindness and giving, a peddler attempts to sell a fine, handcrafted bed, guaranteed to never squeak, to a little man who has no bed at all. But the peddler's heart is moved by the little man's generosity. When it's time to get back on the road, will the peddler leave behind the perfect gift of gratitude?

The Peddler's Bed, by Lauri Fortino

Review "The Peddler's Bed is a delicious story for children, rich with humor and warm with compassion. A peddler with a fine bed on his cart rode by an old man working in his small garden with his dog, Happy. The man admired the fine bed, which the peddler informed him was for sale. The bed was so sturdily made it would never squeak, the peddler assured the old man. Unfortunately, the old man had not even one penny to give for the fine new bed, though he would have loved to have it. The peddler made him an offer: he could have the bed free if he could find a way to make it squeak by sunset. There followed an amazing series of kindly, sharing actions and events that had the sound of little squeaks always present as the old man proceeded to offer water, a meal, and hospitality to the peddler and his pony. The little old man worked very hard, with well worn, squeaky furniture and tools to make a simple soup supper for the peddler, sharing vegetables from his garden, meat from his larder, and water from his well. The peddler enjoyed every moment of the old man's squeaky, creaky hospitality and kindness. Then he asked if he could rest awhile on the fine bed, which the peddler had gotten down from his wagon to demonstrate. A truly touching ending transpires to this quirky little tale that expresses the core message of kindness and hospitality, sharing what you have with others, no matter how humble or how fine. Splendidly expressive illustrations, lit with clownish joy and humor, enshrine the message of "The Peddler's Bed" for readers of any age."-Midwest Book Review

Who, really, is the peddler in the yellow bow tie?

A little old man is watering his garden when a squeak squeak squeak gets his attention. In the distance on the narrow country road, he sees a peddler driving his cart. The old man's dog, Happy, barks in welcome. The old man notices a beautiful bed on the top of the cart, and the courtly peddler, whose blue tailcoat matches his bowler, is happy to bring it down―but the old man hasn’t any way to pay for it. The peddler makes a bargain: if the old man can make it squeak by the end of the day, it will be his. But the bed is so sturdy it never squeaks, unlike the door of the old man's house, his water pump, a field mouse being chased by Happy, and so on. The old man invites the peddler in for a cup of tea and a bit of conversation, giving the peddler a chance to see the extent of the old man’s humble circumstances. The old man is never able to make the bed squeak, but a little kind trickery from the peddler ensures his peaceful rest. Fortino's subtle story of kindness and courtesy features plenty of read-aloud–friendly repetition and onomatopoeia. Redila's palette has the color and clarity of stained glass, and his figures are slightly exaggerated, suggesting Baum's original Oz.

Lovely. (Picture book. 6-9)

This is the third book I've purchased from them and like Too Many Tables and The Gentleman Bat, The Peddler's Bed did not disappoint. It's a remarkable tale of kindness. I did not expect to tear up at the end. I am very impressed with the publisher's vision for their catalog of stories. I am happy to learn that the illustrator is Filipino like myself who grew up in the Philippines. Please check out all of RGP's titles!

They say the course of true love never runs smooth. That’s nothing a magical cupcake can’t solve. Julie Buttercream. Vanilla. Fondant. Dark chocolate. Brown sugar. Molasses. Baking has always been my true love, but it wasn’t until my mother’s death, and the unexpected inheritance of Serendipity Gardens, that my bliss called me. Bittersweet. But Serendipity Gardens has more to offer than just a potential shopfront. An unusual recipe box left to me by a distant relative might be the key to unlocking my dreams. Too bad the most powerful family in Chancellor has plans that could turn those dreams to ruins—literally. Too bad the son of that powerful family is just the kind of guy I’ve been looking for. Horatio I suppose being heir to the Hunter family’s Blushing Grape Winery should make me happy, but nothing could be further from the truth. With my mother gone, my father has taken me under his wing, and I despise everything about the way he does business. Sour grapes, indeed. Instead of raising money for charitable causes, my true passion, I’m chasing my father’s manifest destiny. Too bad his dream includes paving paradise. Too bad the property owner is the sweetest woman I’ve ever met. The Cupcake Witch is a stand-alone sweet romance and book 2 of The Chancellor Fairy Tales series.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Magic and Happiness! By Becky Stephens, Editor and Reviewer After reading The Cupcake Witch, another magical novella by Poppy Lawless, I am ready to pack up everything and move to Chancellor. In this town lives a mermaid and now we meet a hearth witch, who is the sweetest, loveliest witch to grace the streets of Chancellor. We meet Rayne in this novella, but in 2016, we will learn more about him in The Bee Charmer, the third installment of The Chancellor Fairy Tales, and why his eyes have that special sparkle. Gah, I can't wait!Julie is brave, independent, and has style that is all her own. Horatio says she is gorgeous, as if "she'd stepped out of a Botticelli painting, stopped by Woodstock for a makeover, then landed before me to make me lose what little cool I had managed to acquire over the years." I couldn't describe her any better. And seeing how she affects him still makes me smirk.I think I fell in love with these two characters--individually and as a couple--is because we get to see them through the other's eyes. Now, that's magic, and makes their sweet romance even more perfect. The little Tudor cottage that Julie inherits is as much a character as Julie herself. Seeing it for the first time elicits awe. I felt the magic, even with all the dust, and fell in love with it just as fast as Julie did. Oh, to sit in the Victorian greenhouse sipping tea and admiring the shop would be peaceful and magical. I finished this story feeling content and happy.I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Grab a cupcake, sit back, and enjoy the magic. By Stancie Loved, loved, loved the town, the characters, the story line, a truly heartwarming and enjoyable read. Wanted more, more, more, but in a good way, only because I loved the town and the people in it, and wanted to visit longer, or perhaps move there! It was a joy to read, especially because, as an editor/proofreader, I find so many books that throw me out of the story with errors galore. Not in this case, only, maybe, one, lol.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A sweet magical tale with food and love. By MelHay *This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBoom dot com, at my request.Julie's dad inherited a little cottage, that Julie thinks looks like a witches cottage, in Chancellor. Julie should be heading back to college, but can't bring herself to do so as it's a degree her recently deceased mother wanted her to take. Julie wants to bake. Her dad mentions that Chancellor college has a culinary program. When Julie enters the run down shop and home, Serendipity Gardens, to put it up for sale, she falls in love with the style of the house, and the kitchen. She's found the place she wants to be but another wants the spot for his own use. Mr. Hunter has sent his son on the mission to purchase the property. Horatio finds more than he expected when he meets Julie. This is the first time I've listened to Hollie. She does well of voicing Julie and her pain, and a different tone for her father. Hollie makes all her characters individual. Horatio sounds like a man with a shorter feel to his words and his sister, Viola, has a softer sound. Something I noticed as well, I like that I can't hear her breathing between words. The story is told with a seamless flow and easy to listen to.I had to smile at how Julie and Horatio meet. Innocent yet clumsy. Julie doesn't know it, but her boldness to live life as she wants inspires Horatio do the same. They are both not the person that one of their parents is making them be. They both share in this struggle in their lives. They also share that each have lost a parent to cancer. Though they are still hurting from the lose it's not the complete focus of the story, and I love that. They are working to keep going forward as they remember. We have a few characters that join us in helping them find their selves and connecting Horatio and Julie. Viola, Horatio's sister, is a lovely person. She sees what Horatio is wonderful at, organizing events, and she has great advice for her brother. Viola is so right! But they are suppose to follow the family business. And Horatio realizes it's not what he wants to do. Horatio's dad, Aaron Hunter, is a business jerk. It's all about what he wants and now.The three ladies that were dear friends with Mrs. Aster are a delight! They have the knowing way about them. Reminds me of the good witches. lol. They adopt Julie when they meet and learn who she is. Then, Julie learns who they are. Oh this is so sweet!I adored the movie Simply Irresistible with the delicious food and spark of love with the magic in the food. This book fills that same spot in my heart, not for the stories being similar but for the magic in the food and love. Blended with the Good Witch who finds a new home that accepts her and her apothecary ways.Such a sweet story that I enjoyed. I enjoyed how the writing flowed with the characters. This feels like a lovely series to enjoy as people find themselves and each other, friends or more.

Do you ever feel like you're overwhelmed by the minutiae of life? Does it seem like your to-do list never shortens and you're wasting your time doing the same tasks over and over and not making any headway? Are you trapped in this never-ending cycle with seemingly no way out?

I was trapped, and I found a solution. A few years ago, I decided to hire a virtual assistant and it changed my life. I was able to free up a tremendous amount of time to spend on my passions and my dreams. The minutiae of life? Gone! The feeling that I was trapped in the "to-do list" cycle? Abolished! I did the hard work, found a great virtual assistant, and my experiences (good and bad) formed the basis for this book.

This book will take you through everything you need to know about virtual assistants including:

  • Why you need a virtual assistant
  • What a virtual assistant can do for you, including actual examples of tasks that I and my colleagues have outsourced to virtual assistants
  • Where to find a virtual assistant
  • How to interview a virtual assistant
  • How to best work with a virtual assistant, with tips and guidance from my own personal virtual assistant
  • A list of technological resources to utilize with your virtual assistant (programs, apps, and more)

So many times we talk of better operations and management strategies. But, equally as often, we forget that whenever a task is created, we must always think of whether or not this task could be done more effectively and efficiently by someone else. In many instances, this "someone else" can be a virtual assistant, a professional aide that, due to the technological leaps in the last decade, is now available to even the smallest entrepreneur, solopreneur, and busy professional.

I'm happy to be able to give it a 5 star rating (kind of a rare event sometimes). It covered the topic well, and was well written. It was even very pleasant to read!It gave great advice on how to find and manage your VA. It gave actual examples of free software and systems to work with your VA more productively. After taking you from the hand by explaining what a VA is and can do for you it goes into some detail to explain how you could afford it, or why you would want to work it into your budget. Then it talks in detail about interviewing, screening and hiring your first VA.In conclusion it's a great book and I'll be implementing it's advice in my own businesses.

This book provides a concise and articulate plan on how to utilize VA and the many tools available to optimize one's productivity, while maximizing available time for family and leisure. I'm looking forward to applying what I've learned from this book in 2014. Would recommend this book to colleagues, family and friends interested in developing their professional and personal lives - by helping to secure more of the most precious commodity - Time.

A Straight Forward Guide Anyone Can Put to Use Immediately By Brian Witt The last thing a professional who might be considering a virtual assistant needs is a long drawn out diatribe on the subject. Free Time: Hire a Virtual Assistant and Liberate Your Life is a quick read that cuts through the fluff and gets right to the heart of the matter; why you can benefit from hiring a Virtual Assistant, how best to go about finding a quality one, and what are some proven tools to help. Combined with the author's templates, this book is the proverbial straight line from point A to point B.

Today’s business world is more cut throat than ever. Leaders who begin with a passion and vision often lose focus. Greed, discouragement and strife set in. A desire for power and money replaces the original heartbeat of the company. As the competition thickens, many leaders find themselves tempted to give up or give in. They attend seminars to get inspired. They read articles and books on how to increase company sales. They scramble to boost employee morale. All the while, they miss the essential ingredient necessary for fulfillment and success – letting God lead the way. After nearly 20 years leading an International Corporation, award-winning author Jason Davis, CEO of One One 7, has observed the ups and downs of the business world on a Global level. He’s seen companies flourish and grow, and he’s seen leaders crumble in the face of pressure and defeat. Business Backwards is not another book on how to grow your business or succeed. It is a book about doing business God’s way. Using Biblical verses and examples, Business Backwards offers ten simple but powerful principles that will transform your life and career. In a get-rich-quick society that thrives on numbers and accolades, ideas like humility, serving, integrity and diligence may seem counter cultural. And that’s just the point. Business done God’s way may not be the popular path, but it wins in the end. Whether you’re a business leader of a Fortune 500 company, the owner of a mom-and-pop shop or an employee desiring to be a leader someday, Business Backwards is the book for you. It will challenge you, inspire you and encourage you to start doing things differently today.

The best thing about Jason Davis is his devotion to the Lord and how approachable he is in every day life. I love to see an imperfect person create perfection and that's what he's done with this book and his business. Jason doesn't give advice unless he's lived it himself and that's so refreshing. The ideas he discusses are implemented throughout his business practices and he offers you an outline to success without the trial and error most people have to suffer through. He truly practices what he preaches and his success is evidence of the wisdom and expertise he is delivering to you on a black and white, backwards platter of excellence in the form of this beautiful book. Do yourself a favor and read something that will transform your life. Business Backwards is amazing!

After reading Jason's first book, "Your Love Pursue's", it was easy to know he was a remarkable individual. Business Backwards once again, confirms this fact. Jason's ability to succeed despite the challenges and adversity he encountered in his own life make him even more admirable. In a complicated world, Jason shows everyone how taking risks with the right intentions, beliefs and ethics can make a difference. Jason has a writing style that captures the readers attention. The quotes Jason references in the book are relatable beyond the business world. Jason is not only a leader in the music industry, he continues to be an example of how we should all live our lives.

I have only actually used one sticker thusly, and I put it on the back of my Surface Pro 3. I have noticed some small "bubbles"/indents/ or such and hopefully this is not a sign of weak adhesive properties. I like my stickers to really STICK! So we shall see in the future if these stickers retain their stickiness.

After his daughter coughed herself to death and his wife left for the city, Frank hid in their house. Even while riots captured the downtown, smoke rose from the neighbourhood, and his water was cut off, he refused to leave. With only a pool in his basement and a huge bag of rice to survive, he is coming apart as rapidly as his society. When he goes down an alley to kill a dying cat and finds a child, Kaela’s need rescues him from the flames that reach out from the increasingly dangerous city. To distract her from the chaos, Frank tells her about an orderly main street, a library and school, stores, and other impossible remnants of their disintegrating society. Although his description sounds more like a myth than reality, on the road they meet others like themselves, dreamers searching for peace and security. Unfortunately, there are also those who repay kindness with malice, and generosity with greed, and Frank and Kaela’s bond is tested in a world without police and the rule of law. Join Frank and Kaela as they negotiate their deteriorating world. With only their dreams of a better life to guide them, and their love to hold them together, they look for a place worthy of a child who has been burned before.

Not Quite Dark: A Post-Apocalyptic Adoption Story, by Barry Pomeroy

From the Author There are a lot of zombie novels out there. A lot. One of their main features is mass killing. I don't believe that is the first option when society changes, or collapses, or the SHTF. I am more interested in a realistic end of the world scenario. Not Quite Dark is a road novel about a father and a child, and in that way is similar to McCarthy's The Road, but without the crazed cannibals. Instead, it is much closer in theme to Dale Pendell's The Great Bay, a novel about people trying to rebuild a faltering society, which is what we have done since the dawn of time.

About the Author Barry Pomeroy is the author of several novels and almost as many collections of short stories. He received his PhD. from the University of Manitoba in 2000 although he refuses to let that be a limitation. He is an itinerant English professor, boat designer and builder, traveller, carver, sometimes mechanic, carpenter, and web designer.

By Richard Bissell In "Not Quite Dark" a man and a girl he feels responsible for walk across a Post Apocalyptic world in search of a place to call home. But this is not the usual tale filled with flesh eating zombies ans marauding hordes of cannibalistic humans. In this parable we discover that people remain people even after the collapse of government. Yes, there are those who are evil and see the collapse as a chance to do harm, but they are not the norm. Most survivors are shell shocked, trying to understand what has become of their world and attempt to find answers in what no longer makes sense. As the girl and man wander, encountering remnants of the lost world and providing the reader with clues about what destroyed it, this narrative is illuminated by extraordinary tenderness. This man who lost his entire past finds some small sliver of hope for a possible future, personified by a little girl who may hold the key to rebuilding society. The Man's loving efforts to shepherd this girl are made that much more wrenching by the constant search for food, shelter, safety, companionship or hope where people must constantly scavenge simply to subsist. But the book is more radiant than punishing as we see this man embrace faith in the face of no hope whatsoever. Reading Post Apocalyptic literature always begs the question--once our way of life is gone, why would anyone want to survive? "Not Quite Dark" gives us one answer. Because as long as there is love, maybe there is something to live for, and as the narrator shows us at the end, maybe there is a even little bit of hope. I enjoyed this book's writing style immensely, its story simple and told in a manner that came to me clearly, instantly creating depth with a minimum of prose.

Infiltration: Episode 1 of the MAELSTROM Series, by Jack Kolton

Review Jack Kolton is a Byron for the modern age--with the soul of Bukowski.  Indeed, Death may tremble to take Kolton, but in the meantime we get to leap with him from psychic bomb crater to mental pill box, in epics of soul curdling action perpetrated by characters berserk with every kind of pain.  Just before you think there's no hope, Kolton proves it.  Abrupt, disturbing, elegant, and surgical, in another time, Kolton's writing would've gotten him committed to a state hospital for the criminally insane.  Fortunately, he walks free among us, observing and plotting your next expedition into a lavishly barren world of his own fevered invention.  In the end, it's always up to Kolton whether he brings a reader home again, or dumps him in a dystopian ditch to die alone.  If you like intensity, you'll want to hang with Jack Kolton until your corneas dissolve.  Then suck it up and learn Braille." - Robert Blake Whitehill, Author of the Ben Blackshaw Series

About the Author A native of New Jersey, Jack Kolton brings to bear his 17 years experience in Emergence Medical Services, disaster response, and international relief work, as well as over 10 years of personal finance experience as a broker, trader, and advisor, to craft storylines that speak to the human condition and question our perceptions of ethics and society.  Balancing his Quaker sensibilities and reverence for life with turbulent and often surreal experiences across four continents of conflict, poverty, despair, and hope; Kolton channels his well-honed understanding of culture and politics with his unique insight into the vast range of human capacities for good and evil into heartfelt and insightful prose. His debut screenplay, The Summer Bridge, was recently optioned by Calaveras Media for development into a feature film. Jack currently lives in Brooklyn, NY with his partner with whom he shares a penchant for fine whiskies, ecologically responsible living, and a love of wild, natural places.

Kolton invites you into the hell between his ears via Infiltration: Episode 1 of the Maelstrom Series. Mace, the hero, slashes a bloody path through the ruined neopocalyptic cityscape of New York to rescue his pregnant wife. But officers of the peace have become authors of mayhem. Ordinary citizens are helplessly pulped in sadistic subplots along the way. Avenger, rescuer, Mace is forced to adapt his route and his tactics after every fresh encounter with the mindless anarcho-nihilistic predators roaming the streets and firing down from upper stories of burnt out buildings. Mace’s skills at FIBUA, Fighting in Built Up Areas, are lethal, brutal when necessary. He still has a deep well of compassion, but he uses it sparingly. He invokes his absent wife’s conscience when his own is exhausted into silence. Mace has a bullet or a blade for anyone who dares stand between him and his bride. Hieronymus Bosch could have painted and peopled this cement inferno with imps and demons in human form; Jackson Pollock decorated the walls in blood and brain. Readers must join Mace’s mission with prejudice. Mace is dangerous, but you’d definitely want him on your side. Personally, I can’t wait for the next Maelstrom episode. Simply put, I think this is going to be one hell of a series!Robert Blake Whitehill, Author, The Ben Blackshaw Series, www.robertblakewhitehill.com

Out of the corner of my eye, I catch something moving by the barn.

When I look, it disappears. Wait. There it is again, at the cornfield.

Some movement, some thing.

Mom and I have been on the run for years. Every time he catches up with us, we move to a new place and start over.

But this place is different.

This place is full of secrets. And they won't leave me alone.

The Dogs, by Allan Stratton

From School Library Journal Gr 7–10—Cameron and his mother have been on the run from Cameron's father for years. His mother's terror is palpable, but Cameron doesn't quite remember what his dad did to cause all this fear. That's not to say that the teen isn't haunted—when their latest move lands them in a creepy old farmhouse, Cameron's nightmares, irritable behavior, and his burgeoning friendship with a dead child who used to live on the farm point to either a sensitivity to the supernatural or a descent into mental illness. As the protagonist becomes more interested in the property's grisly past, he turns a blind eye to the terror and trauma of his own past, to a dangerous end. Cameron's earnest, straightforward narration takes some of the energy out of what should be, detail by detail, a satisfying horror story. It's only through Cameron's chilling phone conversations with his estranged father that readers will get that electric charge. The tone and structure of the novel indicate a younger readership, but the specifics of the story are fairly grim. VERDICT Psychological family horror for those not quite ready for Daniel Kraus's Scowler (Delacorte, 2013).—Beth McIntyre, Madison Public Library, WI

Review "A real page-turner... [The "Dogs"] stayed with me for days, author Allan Stratton having created an unsettled aura the likes of which Alfred Hitchcock and Stephen King routinely built into their work, too... Stratton's depiction of setting and characters is masterful, and his ability to create tension and keep readers on edge is equally strong." - Montreal Gazette

Is Cameron sinking into madness or are his worse fears true?Readers will be mesmerized by Stratton’s engaging writing style. This spine-chilling, young adult thriller will keep readers guessing until the very last page.Librarians will find this murder mystery to be particularly appealing to teens who enjoy secrets, ghosts, and creepy settings. This is a ghost story that has some creepiness, but is one of those that you feel good about when everything is finally revealed.Cameron and his mom move around a lot. They are always running from Cameron's dad who seems to not be a nice guy. This final move brings them to the old farmhouse that seems like it needs to be demolished by the way Cameron describes it. Needless to say he's not happy at having to leave his friends behind this last time and has a hard time making friends at the new school. One of the boys he talks to says the place is haunted, a man was killed there by his own guard dogs.Cameron starts seeing things, first just movements here and there. But then, he sees a little boy and starts talking to him. In between thinking he is losing his mind, Cameron starts on a search for the people that used to live there. He gets some information from their landlord that lives on the farm next door. He gets more information in different places. But when he starts acting strange his mom and her new boyfriend wonder if something is happening to him. After reading it, I feel that this novel will appeal to the younger YA crowd than to the older crowd based on its content. I enjoyed the story and I liked how the author told the story. As you move through the novel, the author releases the details slowly and adds them to the storyline, there are no big dumps of information and all the information is pertinent to the novel. As the main character starts to unravel or clarify the information on the mystery he was solving, the author does a fantastic job explaining how everything fits together. I always find it frustrating when I’m reading a novel and as the mystery is getting solved, the author is not clear how the pieces fit together. For a YA novel, Allan Stratton could not have done a better job on making this clearer for his readers. I didn’t find the book as thrilling or as riveting as I expected it to be but the paranormal aspect of the book was wonderful. I am used to the creeper aspect of paranormal activity than the mysterious side which I feel this novel undertook so I feel this toned the novel down in intensity for me. For Cameron sees Jacky, he calls to him and sometimes he answers and other times, he doesn’t but Jacky is a part of Cameron’s life now. Cameron’s dad, he’s not a part of Cameron’s life and that is a choice that Cameron’s mom made as she moves Cameron and herself around, for she fears that he is there….somewhere out there watching and he will be back. The farmhouse seems like a nice place to settle down for a while, it’s remote and yet it’s close to a city. The house has a history and Cameron; he’s bound and determined to find out what it is before he becomes a part of it.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Bo still has her sharp, witty bite! By LauraBC One of my favourite urban fantasy authors, Helen Harper continues to offer enthralling, creative, and smart mysteries. I enjoy reading bad-a$$ Bo and her take-charge attitude even when her life is full of challenges--becoming a vampire, 'employed' (aka threatened) by a kakos demon, her father in a coma, having left the New Order (triber detective agency), avoiding the loss of a friend, and her romance forcibly on hold, she still manages to stay independent, unaffected, and her witty dry humor as she helps others. A vigilante of the night--whether you want her 'helping' or not--with a strong attitude and with dry, witty comebacks that have a 'sharp bite' so to speak. The tension between Bo and the other characters are a large part of this one reminding us that Bo can be ruthless but underneath it she is still (barely) hanging onto her morals and humanity, with the plot remaining exciting though fairly even paced until that crazy, tortuous, suprising (and somewhat enraging) cliffhanger of an ending, for which I'm still somewhat upset with Ms Harper. The writing is a beautiful balance between vividly detailed and blase brush-offs that are quintessentially Bo (she only notes things she finds important, so those are the things we read about). There is a bit more romance in this one--thank goodness for more Michael--and more interaction with 'friends' that give a social warmth to uplift and offset all the cold death and horror Bo faces. Another great book that left me both in dire need for more while fearful of what next Bo will be put through!

X has warned her, if anyone learns of his place, his identity, they must die. Bo may be isolated from her friends, but they don't make it easy to stay that way. They keep doing dangerous things like walking in her apartment ---X's apartment. She's kept busy trying not to let them get themselves killed as much as she is the Vigilante. Where before she was a Red Angel who saved lives, she's more Angel of Death here.I would read anything with Bo Blackman in it. Unfortunately, this lovely book is the last of the currently available ones. MORE BO, PLEASE!

It is a well written urban fantasy and extremely fast paced. Bo Blackman P.P.I. has left her group and has gone solo because she feels responsible for the death of two beloved friends. In this book Bo Vampire P.I. is trying to find a missing girl who is the daughter of a rail man Bo befriends. The infighting among vampire families is still out of control. There are rules to the number of each family and one family decides to buck the system. A really fast paced read. Enjoy.

Not Another Superhero is a fun, fast-paced mystery romance that always leaves you wanting more. You’ll fall in love with Samantha Addison, a smart, snarky journalist turned puff-piece editor who’s hiding from the injuries of her past.

Starting with a harrowing scene in which Samantha is attacked by a mugger in an alley, our heroine’s razor-sharp sarcasm flies off the pages. You’ll discover that her wit is what keeps her going when this near-death experience turns out to be just the beginning of an all-out attack.

But who’s behind it?

Strangely, Samantha can’t remember how she managed to survive that initial brutal assault. Weirder still, a hooded man always appears and saves her just in the nick of time.

And why has Trevor Maessen, her former editor during her beat reporter days, picked this moment to show up after leaving her during a traumatic episode seven years earlier?

Amid all of this turmoil, the stoic Jackson Christy might be Samantha’s saving grace—or not.

Twists and turns, along with plenty of action, wit, and romance, make Not Another Superhero an irresistible chick-lit concoction you can’t put down!

By Amazon Customer The main character in the book, Samantha Addison, is just living life until one night, everything changes, and it’s never the same. This book kept me on the edge of my seat, it kept me guessing. I also loved Samantha’s personality; funny, no-nonsense and believable. My only problem with the book is that it ENDED! I must have more! This is the first non-fiction book I’ve read in 10 years and I absolutely cannot wait for another from this author. And although the book has ended, I have a feeling there is way more to this story. I need to understand why, how and what’s next. This book made me laugh out loud and kept me flying through the pages.Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mystery, romance and living on the edge. This book was well worth my Saturday.
