After his daughter coughed herself to death and his wife left for the city, Frank hid in their house. Even while riots captured the downtown, smoke rose from the neighbourhood, and his water was cut off, he refused to leave. With only a pool in his basement and a huge bag of rice to survive, he is coming apart as rapidly as his society. When he goes down an alley to kill a dying cat and finds a child, Kaela’s need rescues him from the flames that reach out from the increasingly dangerous city. To distract her from the chaos, Frank tells her about an orderly main street, a library and school, stores, and other impossible remnants of their disintegrating society. Although his description sounds more like a myth than reality, on the road they meet others like themselves, dreamers searching for peace and security. Unfortunately, there are also those who repay kindness with malice, and generosity with greed, and Frank and Kaela’s bond is tested in a world without police and the rule of law. Join Frank and Kaela as they negotiate their deteriorating world. With only their dreams of a better life to guide them, and their love to hold them together, they look for a place worthy of a child who has been burned before.

From the Author There are a lot of zombie novels out there. A lot. One of their main features is mass killing. I don't believe that is the first option when society changes, or collapses, or the SHTF. I am more interested in a realistic end of the world scenario. Not Quite Dark is a road novel about a father and a child, and in that way is similar to McCarthy's The Road, but without the crazed cannibals. Instead, it is much closer in theme to Dale Pendell's The Great Bay, a novel about people trying to rebuild a faltering society, which is what we have done since the dawn of time.
About the Author Barry Pomeroy is the author of several novels and almost as many collections of short stories. He received his PhD. from the University of Manitoba in 2000 although he refuses to let that be a limitation. He is an itinerant English professor, boat designer and builder, traveller, carver, sometimes mechanic, carpenter, and web designer.

By Richard Bissell In "Not Quite Dark" a man and a girl he feels responsible for walk across a Post Apocalyptic world in search of a place to call home. But this is not the usual tale filled with flesh eating zombies ans marauding hordes of cannibalistic humans. In this parable we discover that people remain people even after the collapse of government. Yes, there are those who are evil and see the collapse as a chance to do harm, but they are not the norm. Most survivors are shell shocked, trying to understand what has become of their world and attempt to find answers in what no longer makes sense. As the girl and man wander, encountering remnants of the lost world and providing the reader with clues about what destroyed it, this narrative is illuminated by extraordinary tenderness. This man who lost his entire past finds some small sliver of hope for a possible future, personified by a little girl who may hold the key to rebuilding society. The Man's loving efforts to shepherd this girl are made that much more wrenching by the constant search for food, shelter, safety, companionship or hope where people must constantly scavenge simply to subsist. But the book is more radiant than punishing as we see this man embrace faith in the face of no hope whatsoever. Reading Post Apocalyptic literature always begs the question--once our way of life is gone, why would anyone want to survive? "Not Quite Dark" gives us one answer. Because as long as there is love, maybe there is something to live for, and as the narrator shows us at the end, maybe there is a even little bit of hope. I enjoyed this book's writing style immensely, its story simple and told in a manner that came to me clearly, instantly creating depth with a minimum of prose.
