A complex and knowledgeable book with impressive pictures By Stephanie Dekrout This highly-illustrated book presents Bhutan textiles in their diversity: they are clothes and everyday objects, currency and commodity, mark important events as gifts during life, and are testament to the social status of a person. But they are also an integral aspect of religious festivals, dances, and rituals that provide insight into the mystical and religious beliefs of the Bhutanese people, and reflect the concept of gender in Bhutanese society. The book also tells the story of a country that is searching for a sensitive balance between tradition and progress in a globalized world. It's an excellent book, meticulously researched and beautifully illustrated with plenty of great field photographs and rare archival images. A wealth of information is included that has never before been available in one volume. It's magical going through the pages and it's a must for textile artists and bhutan lovers.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Lavishly illustrated and well written, brings Bhutan’s textile traditions to life By Pamela Meyer Bhutan is a country that speaks to both the spirit and the eye, and it is impossible to separate its colorful arts – whether textiles, painting or architecture—from its centuries of tradition, religion, festivals and history. This book is a vivid celebration of Bhutan’s sophisticated textile tradition interwoven with the story of the country itself. It offers a vast treasury of photographs, both modern and from 100 years ago, which, together with the carefully researched text, make it a fine introduction to the newcomer interested in Bhutan , as well as a must-have reference for the scholar’s shelf. Particularly fascinating is how the author shows through her photos the people of today’s Bhutan wearing these garments as they go about their daily lives: dancers at the religious festivals, townspeople, farmers in the fields, and weavers at the loom. A colorful look into the lives of the people of Bhutan, seen through the lens of its superb textile tradition.
