About the Author William Makepeace Thackeray was a nineteenth century English novelist who was most famous for his classic novel, Vanity Fair, a satirical portrait of English society. With an early career as a satirist and parodist, Thackeray shared a fondness for roguish characters that is evident in his early works such as Vanity Fair, The Luck of Barry Lyndon, and Catherine, and was ranked second only to Charles Dickens during the height of his career. In his later work, Thackeray transitioned from the satirical tone for which he was known to a more traditional Victorian narrative, the most notable of which is The History of Henry Esmond. Thackeray died in 1863.

The original has rhyming couplets across the page tops, this edition omits them. The original has illustrations by Thackeray, who originally intended to pursue a career as an illustrator, but this edition omits them. It's like printing an Alice in Wonderland without the Tenniel drawings and with none of the songs. This edition is a waste of paper. Shame on Amazon for selling it! Now I have to return to the search for a real printing...

It is excellent reading for long winter evenings and lends itself to reading aloud across age groups. I once owned a hardcover copy with some attractive color plates but unfortunately,my Kindle doesn't support illustrations, so that's something I missed. All in all, a classic worth investing in for your youngsters, but go for the print version so as to enjoy the amazing woodcuts and color plate illustrations.

I first read it as a kid less than 10 and it was as wonderful and meaningful then as it is now.The story of Giglio, Rosalba, Angelica and Bulbo casts a magic spell. Then of course there's Countess Gruffanuff.....The story starts with the birth of these 4 people. The Fairy Blackstick was invited to Giglio and Rosalba's christening and her wonderful-yet startling-gift to each was "a little bit of misfortune". Needless to say, she was barred from attending the christenings of Princess Angelica and Prince Bulbo. The Rose and The Ring are enchanted. If someone wears or carries either, to the rest of the world that individual appears as a most beautiful person. Comedy ensues as The Rose and The Ring change hands.Read carefully-lots of subtle points of laughter such as ..."taking a death warrant from his dressing gown pocket".........(of course we all want to have such things on hand at all times.....)The writing and use of language are superb. This entire story is laced with a very charming and subtle humor-quite droll as Bulbo might say.
