"People don't want to be managed, they want to be led."

Within the first few pages of this book, you’ll realize something with new clarity: managers are a dime a dozen. Most people know or can learn how to manage. But leaders? They’re something special—and what they contribute to an organization is what sets it apart from the competition.

Effective leaders make the difference between an organization that succeeds and one that stagnates. Effective leaders make solid decisions, but they take it a step further—they bring the guidance, vision, creativity, and motivation necessary to powerfully execute the decisions. They influence behavior, shape goals, and encourage the best. An influential leader’s footprint is forever engraved on a successful organization’s heart.

The good news is that you can also learn to be the kind of leader who makes a difference. And this book—written by one of the best—will teach you how.

Great Advice, Occasionally Bizarre Methods By Talia Wong Arthur Coombs gives a very personal account of his experience with leadership: its failures and successes, in the work place and at home, as an observer and as a practitioner. The guidance he gives may not necessarily be new to those who've attended leadership conferences or workshops, but he manages to present his advice in a new and refreshing way by incorporating leadership skills in his own book - he is vulnerable, honest and openly discusses the challenges he has faced on his journey. There were only two complaints I had for this read, the first being to over-use of cliched leader examples, such as Abraham Lincoln and Ghandi. We've heard their stories of leadership since middle school, and, frankly, just hearing the names in the context of a leadership book warrants a mild eye roll. The second complaint is perhaps the inevitable result of writing about a subject like leadership, but there are moments in the book where Coombs comes across as incredibly arrogant and overconfident in his leadership style. Statements about people gushing to him about his lectures are plentiful, and one story about having employees crack eggs over his head to demonstrate his ownership of his own mistakes...well that's just excessive and made one of his employees painfully uncomfortable. In summary, a good book with great advice and sharp observation of what makes a leader - just be ready for the occasional raised eyebrow at some of the self-praise and unconventional tactics.

Some people are great leaders, some are outstanding managers, and few excel at both. But don't be fooled, "Don't Just Manage--Lead," is not your average leadership book. Art Coombs doesn't use graphs and visuals, or facts and statistics to define the qualities of a leader and/or manager. Instead, he uses engaging real-life examples of both. Nor does Coombs only highlight his and others' accomplishments and successes, he discusses mistakes and major failures, even his own.The book is chunked into what Coombs calls the "five main tasks of leaders." He defines each one, which he follows with funny (and sometimes embarrassing) examples of how to accomplish (or, in some cases, fail at) each of those tasks.I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, and I gave this book five "gold" stars. Why? First... Coombs' writing is witty. I picked this book up, and I couldn't put it down. From the Introduction he had captured my attention, warmed my heart, and inspired and motivated me to start my own journey to leadership. And I found myself sharing some of the points that Coombs made. Second... some of his personal stories, like the one about "wam" meals (no, I didn't misspell that) and a mean-as-sin 'coon dog, made me pause and THINK! I connected with the "lessons" both emotionally and mentally. Third... Coombs' message isn't just for the business world, but each and everyone of the principles of leadership, as outlined in this book, do translate to every area of our lives. Coombs' "Don't Just Manage--Lead" truly is "a book with a difference."

The other books mentioned leadership but this is focused on the topic. The author has experience in the success and failures in the journey to becoming a good leader. He talks about other successes too which is good. There are two kinds of people: those who don’t want to hear from the person of their successes because it sounds like bragging and that the author is avoiding some of his or her failures. Some prefer to hear cold hard facts about others which is accommodated in this book as Mr. Coombs talked about the successful leadership of people like Steve Jobs and Abraham Lincoln. Meanwhile others like the first-hand experience. This includes both, the first hand and the others. In this book, the author is willing to explain his failures. The book is divided into the overall body of the five main tasks of leaders. In each section, Arthur, the author, defines each task, describes the points of succeeding, and gives good and bad examples. If you are looking for a book to help yourself, self-help, become a better leader rather than just staying where you are at, then this is a good book to help you get to the next step. By this I do not just mean if you are in business but it can really relate to many areas in life. Therefore, although I would obviously recommend the book to anyone in the business world trying to move up or in charge of others, I wouldn’t limit on who could benefit from this book!I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
