Earth Flight, by Janet Edwards

From School Library Journal Gr 8 Up—In this conclusion to the science fiction trilogy about Jarra, a teen whose immune system keeps her from traveling to space, the archaeology and military star is now a celebrity. But increasing prejudices, pressure to solve the mystery of an alien artifact, and her aspirations to travel to other planets motivate Jarra to buck conventions once again. Well-done world-building, an unforgettable protagonist, and an even-paced plot will satisfy sci-fi fans.

Review “This thrilling finale takes the Earth Girl trilogy to astonishing new heights. Edwards never fails to impress and entertain, expanding her brilliantly imagined SF universe while constantly raising the personal stakes for Jarra. I want more!”   —E. C. Myers, author of the Andre Norton Award–winning Fair Coin and The Silence of SixPraise for Earth Girl:"Action, rich archaeological detail and respectfully levelheaded disability portrayal, refreshingly free from symbolism and magical cures, make this stand out." - Kirkus STARRED REVIEW"Tired of bitter, angst-ridden heroines and their associated dark dystopias? Look no further than Edwards' refreshing debut." - Booklist STARRED REVIEW"With a dash of action, sprinkling of romance, some teenage angst and a couple of collapsing skyscrapers, this novel contains everything you could possibly want to grab a teenage reader and keep them utterly enthralled." - Starburst"A break from the norms." - SFX

About the Author Janet Edwards is the author of Earth Girl and Earth Star. As a child in England, she read everything she could get her hands on, including a huge amount of science fiction and fantasy. She studied mathematics at Oxford, and went on to suffer years of writing unbearably complicated technical documents before deciding to write something that was fun for a change. She has a husband, a son, a lot of books, and an aversion to housework.

By Jaylia Earth Flight is the third book in this series featuring Jarra, a feisty, junk food loving, slang savvy, far-in-the-future girl who’s handicapped by having an immune system that won’t allow her to portal off of the home planet, so if you haven’t read the first two books, this isn’t the place to start, but if you’ve enjoyed the others it would be nardle to miss this one because it’s a totally zan conclusion. At least I think it’s the close of a trilogy, but I’d love another book and this one ends with Jarra still having lots left to do. If this is the end I’m going to hate leaving this totally amaz universe behind. In the previous book Jarra and her twoing partner Fian managed to send a message to the alien ship parked just above Earth, which keeps the young couple involved in the government’s first contact project, so now Jarra is juggling military duties, history of early humanity classes, dangerous dig site field work at the ruins of once magnificent Earth cities, and her relationship with Fian, which goes through a lot of changes in the story. One of the things I’ve loved best about this series is how thoroughly Janet Edwards has developed the diverse cultures of the far flung off-Earth settlements, and we learn more them all in this book, especially the somewhat notorious Beta clans since Jarra has discovered she’s one of them. This isn’t a perfectly written series, but it’s “flaws” have actually seemed to enhance my pleasure. There’s info dumping, but it’s fascinating since the future Edwards imagines is so detailed and interesting, and Jarra can be a bit of a Mary Sue (though that’s less in this third book), but she’s utterly charming anyway because she’s so good natured and full of enthusiasm. If you love this series check out Janet Edwards’s website for 8 free prequel stories that further explore all the off-Earth colonies.

I liked the writing style and the story well enough to recommend reading all three in the chronological order: "Earth Girl", "Earth Star" and then "Earth Flight." I never floundered while reading this book, but it would have been better to know how Jarra got where she was at the beginning of the story. The plot is non-stop action with enough relationship scenes to provide for Jarra's growth. The story never feels rushed or pasted together. The internal logic is consistent. Ms. Edwards surprised me when she unveiled the ID of the villains in the last part of the book. I didn't see that coming...Overall, I was happy with the story and the conclusion. Fortunately for Jarra fans, I think Janet Edwards left plenty of room to tell us what happens next.

Wish I would've read the first two By Jennifer Miller Alright, so I must admit that I didn't pay attention enough when I grabbed this to know that it was part of a series. I actually didn't even figure that out until about 20 pages in. Then I started to feel like I was missing something and Wikipedia'd the book. Even with the fact that I missed two books and only read the back cover of those to get the basic story line, this was still a good read.Jarra is an excellent character. Even though she has probably had her history built up a lot in the previous installments, you still get to know her very well here. She is sassy and definitely pushes the limits. Within this, she learns more about her heritage and finds out that she is part of a clan. Along with that discovery, she learns her history and a lot of the Earth's history. I feel like this book gave me a lot of the backstory to world building that Edwards has done. I didn't get a lot of the futuristic impressions that I believe were covered more thoroughly in the other books, but I got a lot of how the earth got there. Honestly, Edwards progression is done very well. The only thing that I think is a drawback is that there are parts where I feel the storyline stops so that Edwards can explain things. I wanted the action to keep going as Jarra discovers instead of kind of a pause to give the information needed to understand what has happened. I also didn't quite know if this was a book that was supposed to wrap things up or leave things open. There are a lot of loose strands, but at the same time I felt like things were being finalized. I guess this may have some added short stories or possibly become a saga instead of a trilogy.
