Something is amiss in the capital. Callifax has always been a bastion for Inquisitor Simon Whitlock—the walled city a barrier against the chaos of the magical world. After the physical and emotional pain of his last few mission, safety is all he desires. But a monster is stalking the streets, an abomination far more violent than even the mystical denizens he's thus far encountered. The monster has slain women in Solomon's Way, the nightlife district of the modern capital. Solomon's Way, a part of town Simon and Luthor have frequented all too often. Solomon's Way, where the woman he loves lives and works. Now Inquisitor Whitlock must face a new breed of monster, one that will force the Inquisitor to face his very shortcomings as a friend and a man. Simon has killed a demon, werewolves, and vampires, but some of the most dangerous demons live inside us all. Demons that can't be killed by swords and guns.

Each book has been drastically different and completely unpredictable. He doesn't follow a set template at all; these are not cookie cutter books!Instead of the masterful duo (which now seems to be a trio) leaving on an adventure, they stay in Fairfax and are thrust in the midst of a murder mystery that hits way too close. There was one point in the story where I was about to hurl my kindle across the room in disbelief, but quickly realized that this would just waste precious reading time. Jon looks like a nice guy in his author photo, but don't let this fool you! He has no problem ripping your heart out and destroying your emotions in this book! In fact, you may want to keep a box of tissues nearby for this one. A mix between Frankenstein and Jack the Riper, this story goes where I never thought it would. (Can you tell that I'm still very hung up on the huge curve-ball that he threw?!) This is the first book in the series to end with on a cliffhanger, but I guess the story had to take a break somewhere or he just wanted to prolong the suspenseful agony he left us in. Book four better be getting very close to publication because I can't wait much longer to see if my guess for the mysterious villain is correct and to see justice served.

Smith-Pena I picked up the first volume in this series while searching for an entertaining free read. I was completely hooked after "Wolves of the Northern Rift" and purchased Book 2, "The Blood Thief", soon after. I couldn't wait for Book 3 to come out and I treated myself for Christmas. I was not disappointed! While there are obvious comparisons to Sherlock Holmes and Watson, we find that all of the main characters are contradictory and complex, and yet they fit together seamlessly. The plot moved quickly and somewhat predictably yet held enough surprises, twists and turns that I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book and read it over the course of two nights. Either I have to read more slowly or Jon Messenger needs to write faster! LOLBrief synopsis: Simon, Luthor and Mattie find themselves in the midst of an investigation into a series of odd murders in Solomon's Way, the seedier side of town where Simon's fiance lives and works. Their investigation brings them into political conflict with the local constabulary where they find an unlikely ally and a possible suspect. In the background, Simon is offered a promotion by the King. As the story unfolds we find ourselves wondering where the politics and mayhem will bring the Inquisitor, Luthor and Mattie -- all of whom have secrets to keep. This latest installment brings more depth to the characters and fleshes out a bit more of the world of Callifax and its politics. And now we will have to wait until Book 4 to see how the author will weave all of these threads into concluding this story line. Looking forward to it!

I was happy that it was yet another fantastic book in the Magic and Machinery series, but now I'm anxious for book four. It does end with some unresolved plot lines, (a sort of cliff hanger, if you will) but that just makes me want to read the next book even more. Over 2015, I've read books one through three in this series, and each one is great in its own way.Once more, I'll say I think one of the strongest points in this series is the characters. The first book, The Wolves of the Northern Rift established Simon Whitlock and Luthor Strong as a great team, and this latest installment, The Golem of Solomon's Way is no exception. What I took away from this book is the fact that Luthor is emerging as the voice of reason between him and Simon. That's evident from the way he handled certain developments in the plot, and I find myself liking him more and more in each book that has come out. And Mattie the werewolf? She's a great secondary character, and it's interesting to see her character development. As far as the plot, instead of finding themselves traveling to some remote corner of the kingdom, this book finds the three remaining in the capital city of Callifax, investigating a series of murders in the titular Solomon's Way. In this regard, I found myself thinking of Sherlock Holmes, a comparison I made after reading book one.Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and my rating is 5/5 platypires.
