[Note: it also comes in blue imitation leather as well as standard paperback and hardback editions for the less pink-enthusiastic among us.] I presented it to my four-year-old daughter, who was thrilled to have her own Bible, and even more excited that it was pink. With the imitation leather cover it looks like a “real” Bible, versus a storybook, which makes her feel all grown up.We’ve been reading this Bible together for a while now, and my daughter recognizes the pictures of Pockets the kangaroo (who appears in the margins with her hands folded in prayer), and tells me that it’s time to pray. Too cute. The prayers are well-written, short and sweet with easy vocabulary and sentence structure. Best of all, they relate the story we just read back to the child’s life. I read a short phrase at a time and my daughter repeats it after me. I think this may be our favorite part of our Bible reading time. For the most part, the hands-on activities included within the story (and marked in the text with a colorful handprint) are pretty simple, fun, and easy to incorporate. We’ll do some and skip others (or save them until the end of the story) depending on my daughter’s level of engagement at the time and what’s involved. Examples include pretending to be animals, rocking like you’re on a boat, identifying/counting things in the illustration, making sound-effects, acting out parts of the story, etc. They’ve been great for keeping my daughter actively involved. This is the first Bible I’ve owned in the New Living Translation. This version does seem easier to read and understand than many other translations, as advertised in the product description. And I love the fact that this is a children’s Bible that goes verse-by-verse using big sections of a standard translation of the Bible to tell the individual stories. That said, it’s not uncommon for us to come across words and phrases in the text that are unfamiliar to my four-year-old, and I find myself pausing to explain or rephrase. I would’ve loved to see simple definitions of some of these words included in the margins alongside the hands-on activities. Not a deal-breaker in my opinion, but maybe something to consider in a future edition?I look forward to continuing to read this Bible with my daughter on a regular basis. And I’m thinking of getting a blue copy of the Hands-On Bible (meant for older kids, ages 6-12) for her big brother. If you’re in the market for a children’s Bible, My First Hands-On Bible could make a great choice.Thank you to Tyndale House for providing a complimentary copy of this Bible for review purposes.

We loved it! It's perfect for the youngest little Bible learners. I'd say 0-3 is probably an ideal age for this Bible, overall(even though 3-6 is the recommended age). When I saw that there was an imitation leather version of it, I thought it would be perfect for my Bumblebee to use. While we tried the blue colored one, because my home is filled with little boys, there's also a pink one for the little girls out there(even if I prefer the blue one, either way). ;)This Bible uses real verses to tell a Bible event, from a New Living Translation standpoint. It doesn't use every verse, though. For example, within the chapter about the history of Joseph and his brothers, one part shows that verses 26, 27, 28, 29, and 30 are used from Genesis 37, and then it skips to verse 36. It also doesn't cover every event within the Bible. The Old Testament has 39 events covered, and the New Testament has 46 events covered. The great thing about this particular Bible is that it gives the parent directions that would appeal to a little one while reading it. It might tell you to count an object within a picture with your little one, or act like an animal that is being discussed, maybe by making that animal noise, or actually acting like one. It might tell you to march around the room, getting your little one to follow you. Everything is simple, and doesn't require buying tons of things, but it gives young children a visual lesson to go with the Bible history lesson. There's also plenty of sweet pictures that can teach little ones when they're looking through the book by themselves. Also, at the end of each chapter, there's extras, like songs, questions, and activities. In the chapter about Jericho's Falling Walls(Joshua 6), the book suggests you build a wall with your child with blocks, and then march around it 7 times, letting your child knock it down after the 7th time around. It also suggests that you show your child how to make a horn by cupping their hands over their mouth and blowing. Each time that week they see something amazing that God has done, the child could blow on their horn. It's a really sweet book, and has tons of potential for making precious Bible related memories with small children, and I definitely recommend it.*I was provided a review copy, in exchange for my honest opinion.

It doesn't just tell the Bible story, it has the actual Bible verses. There are lots of little extras that make this great for the young ones. So first you have the Bible story with real Bible verses. There are little hand prints that tell the children to do something - "Shout as loudly as you can for Jesus." There is a short prayer at the end of each passage. The "lets talk" section gets the child thinking and answering questions "Tell me a time when someone hurt your feelings" There are activities all throughout that are very age appropriate. "Put a flashlight under your chin to make your face glow. Talk about why you think Jesus glowed." And "The Jesus connection - this is how the story relates to Jesus and our lives "Jesus stopped the storm and took away the disciples' fears. Jesus can take away your fears too." There are even suggestions of things for parents to do "Get out some oil and rub a little on your child's hand. Remind them how the Samaritan used olive oil to help soothe the man's wounds."I am so thrilled with the thought of using this with my future grandchildren. This is definitely a Bible that you will use with your child, not just something for them to use on their own. This is a teaching tool, the best kind! Each passage is short and easy for them to understand. There are tons of really cute colorful pictures to keep their interest. The activities are easy and quick so they won't loose interest or think they are too hard. Even the prayers are short, easy to understand and to the point.I can honestly say that everything about this is perfect and age appropriate. Even the cover - imitation leather (mine is pink) is bright, soft, and beautiful.Thank you Tyndale House Publishers for sending me this beautiful Bible for my honest review!
