Karen Kondazian's newly revised and edited The Actor's Encyclopedia of Casting Directors, compiles valuable inside information from over 100 premier casting directors, as regards to both Hollywood and New York film, television, theater and commercial auditioning. Bonus conversations included are discussions on film acting, with award-winning directors James Cameron and John Woo - and interviews with renowned acting coaches ‘to the stars,’ Larry Moss, Milton Katselas and Jeff Corey. Great casting directors have the talent to identify which actor will fit that one role, filtering through hundreds of 'potentials,' eventually delivering that actor into the hands of the decision makers. This in-depth book about the casting process informs actors what it’s like to be on the other side of the desk, what each casting director likes, dislikes and is searching for in the audition process. The Actor's Encyclopedia of Casting Directors exists to educate, inspire and empower actors because far too much in this business is out of their control. You have at your fingertips an invaluable resource that serves the actor in any number of ways - one unique example being, it includes a photo of each casting director. (How many actors are in a daze when they walk into the audition room wondering if they are auditioning for the casting director or their assistant - now they will know). Karen Kondazian’s experience as an award-winning actor and author (The Whip, inspired by a true story) and her previous long running column for Backstage, enabled her to ask questions on behalf of actors everywhere. The answers Kondazian has garnered for this book will hopefully give the actor real knowledge and confidence, so that when they walk out of the audition room, they know that they did their best.

About the Author Karen Kondazian's career as an actor, author and producer, started early in life... At the age of eight, Karen was chosen to be one of the infamous children on Art Linkletter's famous Kids Say the Darndest Things. The opportunity to miss school during tapings was all it took for Karen to abandon her life's goal of becoming a CIA spy and focus on acting. She was born in Boston, completing her education at The University of Vienna and The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, after which she began her acting career in New York. Her first professional work was in the Off Broadway, award-winning production of Michael Cacoyannis' The Trojan Women, later winning the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Actress in The Rose Tattoo. Tennessee Williams, after seeing her work, was so impressed that he gave her carte blanche to produce any of his plays in his lifetime. Other award-winning performances include Sweet Bird of Youth (with Ed Harris), Vieux Carre (with Ray Stricklyn) and Maria Callas in Master Class. On television, she has appeared as a series regular lead in CBS's Shannon, and also guest starred in over 50 television shows and films including: James Dean (with James Franco) and Yes Giorgio (with Luciano Pavarotti). She is a lifetime member of the Actors Studio and a member of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. As an author, Kondazian is a multi-award winning novelist. Her debut novel, The Whip, won the USA News Book Award (Best Historical Fiction), Readers Favorite Award (Best Western Fiction), among other awards. The book was also featured on the cover of Publishers Weekly and is a screenplay.

Accurate and Insightful By Thomas Mills - Senior Columnist, Backstage West Newspaper While I'm not in the habit of recomending industry books, I do praise Karen Kondazian's, The Actor's Encyclopedia of Casting Directors. It's a highly practical, intelligently written work that will be an asset to any working actor or newcpmer who hopes to find work. The information dispened in the Q&A format will help you prepare for any auditon wheter it be for the particular casting director profiled or someone else you may be reading for. A quick note; not one day after reading the book I stepped into an elavator and came face to face with one of the casters profiled in the book, I'd actiually read for this person two years before but for the life of me couldn't remember her name. Then, miracle of miracles I somehow saw her face and name from the book, and was quickly able to make a proper introduction. I use the book regularly before auditons to refresh my memory as to what each casting directors' likes and dislikes are.

But after repeating the basics over and over with 100 interviews, there is not alot of depth or additional details. The basic teachings, such as being early to the audition, being prepared, being polite, being a professional, being an enthusiastic auditioner.....well, this is repeated for the 100 interviews. It could have been a much better book, with more details, so 3 stars.

Bingham The role of a casting director is often misunderstood and actors are too often unaware of the pitfalls of auditions. This book is a must-have to help you find your way through. With direct interveiws with over 100 casting directors (mainly LA-based film/TV CDs, but some NY ones also) it gives you direct feedback on what casting directors like to see and don't.One of the best advantages of this book is that you can see what preferences vary among casting directors...and what preferences are universal in the industry. This is an extremely valuable took and one I think should be in everyone's library!
