2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great read! By JJ Doug Kelly's storytelling gets better and better. Across the Lake had me at Chapter One. In one fell asteroid-crushing swoop, the earth is plunged to its near-beginnings, and almost everything and everyone is lost. How fragile our planet really is. How easily thousands of years of human progress might be swept away, leaving the few who survive to begin again. Doug Kelly creates a vivid picture of such a world in this fascinating tale of struggle and hope. Congratulations to Kelly on another great book!

A young man's adventure in a post-apocalyptic Louisiana By Carl Allen Doug Kelly's previous books were outstanding examples of the post-apocalyptic survival genre. This book represents a departure in that it takes place far in the future, after an asteroid causes tsunamis, earthquakes, weather changes, and volcanic eruptions. How far in the future is not specified, but Americans are called "the Ancients" and are almost forgotten. Most of the world's population died after the asteroid hit, and technology is gone. Over the years, those who remain develop into four distinct groups: 1. clansmen who live in villages, with several villages under the control of a warlord; 2. hill people, who are shepherds and trade with the clans; 3. nomads who travel through the forests, preying on travelers, and sometimes attacking hill people and clan villages; 4. cannibals, who live in the swamps, killing any human they find for food.The main character is Aton, a young man who is in love with his warlord's daughter, but is framed for murder and forced to flee. He seeks to become a warrior and gain honor and fortune so that he can return to his home and exact revenge on the men who ruined his life. The adventures he encounters are varied and exciting. He crosses Lake Ponchartrain (which is MUCH larger than it is now, due to the asteroid strike) sailing in a small homemade boat, and encounters several situations that challenge him in various ways.The only thing I noticed that could be called a negative was Kelly's tendency to be overly descriptive of the scenery that Aton travels through. Kelly's wordiness in that regard reminded me of James Fennimore Cooper's verbosity. However, some people may enjoy that, and I will say that Kelly paints some beautiful word pictures that give the reader a vivid mental idea of what Aton experienced.Overall, the book is worth a read, and definitely worth the price. I look forward to seeing what happens to Aton in the sequel.

It began with the impact event, described the decline of civilization, then how nature reclaimed the landscape. After many generations, humans formed distinct communities and lifestyles, often clashing with one another.Aton Matin, the clan leader’s only son, was a hot-tempered young man. He had eyes full of romance for his warlord’s oldest daughter, Esina Regalyon, but her father, Olar, had nothing but contempt for Aton, who was the only man she loved. Under the warlord’s watchful eyes, Aton and Esina were star-crossed lovers. Against his father’s advice, Aton devised a secret plan to build a boat and sail across the gigantic lake that bordered his clan’s territory. In a distant and unfamiliar region on the other side of the lake, he desired to prove his bravery and find manhood in battle while serving under a cruel warlord from the merchant city of Acadia. He planned to come back home as an accomplished warrior, a hero, and rich with the spoils of war, but soon after he finished the boat, a series of unexpected events caused him to flee for his life. He escaped in his vessel and sailed across the enormous lake.This book was an interesting glimpse at a possible post-apocalyptic scenario for Earth and humans. I highly recommend this book.
