Most of the major cities in the nation have been totally destroyed by riots. Millions upon millions of refugees flee population centers in every direction, desperate to find some safe haven before the first snows of winter. Organized relief efforts are breaking down due to lack of resources, leaving relief workers stranded wherever they've ended up, in the same plight as the refugees around them. Trevor Smith and his cousin Lewis Halsson have lost most of what they'd prepared to weather the disaster, including the shelter they built, and are making for the mountains. There they'll test their skills and ingenuity against far harsher conditions than they'd face in the valley below. Meanwhile their friend Matt Larson and his family, left behind in the small town of Aspen Hill, face their own worries. Thanks to Ferris and his soldiers the town's insufficient food supplies are being shared out to the nearby refugee camp, threatening to leave everyone starving before winter even begins. The gang operating out of the refugee camp is also causing trouble, harboring a deep bitterness for the town that wouldn't let them in. And over all other worries looms the approaching winter that few seem ready for. Those fortunate to survive it must then worry about planting crops and lasting until harvest, with potentially greater problems looming on the horizon.

Ferris the evil fed flees the town while stealing all the remaining food. On BICYCLES! Why don't several hundred townspeople stop him? Because "12 soldiers, all with m-16s SLUNG OVER THEIR BACKS" (Yes, that's a direct quote) keep the townspeople at bay.Later, when Ferris returns with 50 well armed men and several vehicles, one of which has a turret mounted .50 cal, manned by the town's ONLY former policeman (also turned corrupt, of course), the town lets Ferris' convoy approach the town "to talk" because they "hope to avoid violence and bloodshed". And then they let Ferris drive out of a well planned ambush that they had just spent HOURS setting up. This makes perfect sense, especially because the town KNEW he was coming, because the next town over called to say that Ferris and his goons had just robbed all of THEM at gunpoint, but hadn't killed or raped anyone.I read the first one, and let a lot of stupidity and wishful thinking slide by, but this is just ridiculous. I quit in the middle of this book, I'm deleting it as soon as I finish this review. The characters are stupid people that are deserving of death. Example: the town, population 1,200, starving to death, no food, dead of a harsh Utah winter, racked by an influenza outbreak, plagued by bandits, and yet manages to find the energy to BURY every single person that dies. All 550 of them. In frozen, rocky soil. With no machinery, all by hand digging. Yes, that's right, 650 people bury 550 people. While starving. Including burying bandits, rapists, and total strangers. In the town cemetery, right next to their family members, who were killed an raped by said bandits. Because even though they are bandits, they still deserve a proper burial.Stupid.

It is human nature to think that the current situation is what has to be and will not change. Our current situation is particularly perilous with an emboldened Shiite Iran facing off against its Sunni Arab neighbors. A war in the region that shuts off the straits of Hormuz could suddenly cut off a large part of the world's oil. In the US, we cannot build new oil refineries due to obstruction by the environmentalists so the existing ones are just enlarged leading to a concentration vulnerable to terrorist attacks. I hope that the US could recover better than portrayed in the book from attacks but the scenario presented is certainly possible. The book is well written with brisk pace and interesting characters. Unlike many in this genre, the heroes are not super-tough ex-military but ordinary people. One of the 'cousins' is sort of in that mold but he has his vulnerabilities. The characters are so ordinary that they seem too naive and I keep wanting to tell them 'Don't do that!'**** spoiler alert ****As the book closes, the town has survived the first winter but still has to solve the problem of feeding themselves without outside assistance. I will be interested to see how they are able to cope given that their new mayor still has an open doors policy for refugees streaming from the big cities.

By Amazon Customer Excellent book, I never write reviews but feel like this book deserves praise. I read WTSHTF books all the time and this one seemed to give a great perspective on how things would be in a crisis. Really enjoyed it.
