Ses Lucani has never known her parents. Powerful leaders in the cold war left over after the gods' imprisonment, Ses's mother and father are now bitter rivals, each pretending their secret daughter doesn't exist. Raised by her grandfather, Ses now lives in the hollowed-out center of the planet and learns to forge wrightings, tools imbued with soul energy and used to maintain the prison of the gods. When terrorists attack the prison on her sixteenth birthday, Ses is forced to flee after the ensuing investigation reveals the secret of her parentage. Suddenly, the very parents who abandoned her may be the only people she can trust. Running from government operatives and fanatic cultists, Ses meets Murien, a boy with fingers in a shadowy network that can lead her to her father. But some secrets are darker than parentage. On her way to find her father, Ses will uncover truths about her family and herself that will shatter her understanding of the world and risk the return of the gods themselves.

By Alyssa Brown Channeling equal parts Neil Gaiman, Terry Prachett, and Suzanne Collins, Greg Little's freshman offering is as smart as it is thrilling. We meet Ses Lucani at the height of her boredom, which quickly changes as the temple alarm sounds. From that point forward, the narrative--and Ses--hurdles forward, bringing with it a compelling sense of immediacy. Ses travels upward, through a gaping wound in the earth, to the eerie yet fascinating cities of Crocodilius, Viperid Mons, and Arach Arbor. As she searches for her mother and father, major power players in rival factions, her encounters are both gripping and heartwarming. (For example, who would ever think that they would develop an attachment to a horse-sized spider?) The story appears to flirt with predictability, yet ultimately twists and turns to arrive at a satisfying conclusion. Unwilling Souls answers just enough questions, while leaving sufficient mysteries so that fans will eagerly await Volume 2.

Fascinating and complex world By Marie Moler Fantastic and very creative world with smiths at the center of the earth, imprisoned gods, and cities built into the skeletons of giant animals, but to me it's first and foremost a mystery. Ses, a 16 year old apprentice smith, uncovers conspiracies, underground resistance fighters, spies, and just how close her world is to collapse. The social and physical order of the world is complex and carefully laid out for the main character and reader and revealed throughout the book. The book is a great introduction to a fascinating world and characters and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Freshman novel written by a to-be-discovered Master Writer By A Customer This book is a mixture of science fiction and fantasy, written with the perfectionist’s eye of a practicing engineer. The author immerses us immediately in an unfamiliar yet believable world, where the usual laws of physics mix with a few new mystical rules. He cleverly builds our understanding of this world through the eyes of the main character, from whose perspective we experience all of the action. She is young and inexperienced but not stupid and certainly not ordinary. As the story begins, her world is suddenly disturbed, and we go on a long road of discovery and adventure and danger with her and the people that she meets along the way. The world itself is fantastic, hinting frequently at amazing characters and events that occurred in the distant past. The action takes place in only a fraction of this world, but that is still enough to awe the heroine (and us vicariously following readers). In the end of this first volume, we find that she has exemplified the strong yet feminine archetype, relying on her own bravery and confidence to succeed.I found it strange that such a great book told through a female’s perspective could be written by a man, but that made me realize that it is not our sex that gives us perspective, but our willingness to think about our world in more than one way. Although the author described this book to me as aimed toward young adults—and certainly that is the demographic from which the main characters are drawn—like the Harry Potter novels from J.K. Rowling, this book challenges and entertains and rewards the adult mind as well. I never found a wasted sentence, nor an extraneous description of any person or place, yet everything was made to come perfectly to life to serve the story. This book is the work of a master writer, who has learned and emulated only the good from the great writers of fantasy and science fiction. This book is suitable for mid-teens and up. I think that girls and women who enjoy a little fantasy, a little science, and a lot of strong can-do femininity will enjoy this book the greatest. Guys should not fear though: this is no “chick book.” There are strong male characters that are integral to the story and to the development of the main female character. There is satisfaction here for everyone.I thoroughly enjoyed this book, highly recommend it, and look forward to the sequels.

An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations, generally referred to by its shortened title The Wealth of Nations, is the magnum opus of the Scottish economist and moral philosopher Adam Smith. First published in 1776, the book offers one of the world's first collected descriptions of what builds nations' wealth and is today a fundamental work in classical economics. By reflecting upon the economics at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the book touches upon such broad topics as the division of labour, productivity, and free markets. In it Smith analyzes the major elements of political economy, from market pricing and the division of labour to monetary, tax, trade and other government policies that affect economic behaviour. Throughout he offers seminal arguments for free trade, free markets and limited government. Criticizing mercantilists who sought to use the state to increase their nations' supply of precious metals, Smith points out that a nation's wealth should be measured by the well-being of its people. Prosperity in turn requires voluntary exchange of goods in a peaceful, well-ordered market. How to establish and maintain such markets? For Smith the answer lay in man's social instincts, which government may encourage by upholding social standards of decency, honesty and virtue, but which government undermines when it unduly interferes with the intrinsically private functions of production and exchange. Social and economic order arise from the natural desires to better one's lot and to gain the praise and avoid the censure of one's neighbours and business associates. Individuals behave decently and honestly because it gives them a clear conscience as well as the good reputation necessary for public approbation and sustained, profitable business relations.

This is Smith's complete and unabridged final version of the Wealth of Nations. It provides footnotes on Smith's wording, the historical context, and the differences between Smith's 5th edition and previous editions. In addition, the margin of the pages contain useful notes which summarize Smith's writing. For the price, this is clearly the superior choice. Now, if you're wondering whether you should undertake such an endeavor, let me just say that Adam Smith was a professor of rhetoric. He explains everything so precisely, yet so comprehensible. Smith's writing is by no means difficult; I actually found it a surprisingly easy read given its antique nature. Once you get through the first chapter, you get quite used to Smith's writing style. If you put adequate time and energy into it, it's not hard at all.

Wight Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations brilliantly analyzes how a nation's living standards can be raised. In large part his wisdom still applies today. To briefly summarize Smith's thinking:1. Standards of living are determined by the productivity of workers.2. Productivity of workers is greatly enhanced by specialization (see the famous example of the pin factory in the first chapter!).3. Greater specialization is possible only if the market size grows. Thus, government laws that prohibit growth of the market hurt specialization, and thereby keep living standards from rising. This is why Smith opposed laws that restricted trade or created monopolies. Smith actively worked to keep Britain from going to war against its American colonies over trade issues. The Wealth of Nations is a political tract designed to sway the British parliament (obviously it failed in that regard).4. Productivity of workers is enhanced by raising their wages.5. Productivity of workers is enhanced by publicly funded education.6. The role of markets is exquisitely analyzed by Smith. Self-interest leads people to carry out private activities that lead to social betterment, as if by an "invisible hand."7. It is a serious misinterpretation of Smith to assert that greed or selfishness is the same as self-interest. Smith labored hard to avoid any such confusion. Please see his other book which addresses this specific issue: The Theory of Moral Sentiments.8. Clearly Smith favored limited government. But Smith was NOT a strict advocate of laissez-faire. He ended his illustrious career as commissioner of customs, a job he took seriously, and which he would not have taken had he not thought this level of intervention in the economy warranted.Read the first three chapters of WN: they contain the essence of the arguments above. Then look in the index to find reference to the "invisible hand" "monopoly" "colonies" and other subjects of interest.Buy the GLASGOW EDITION of the Wealth of Nations. This is the most up-to-date annotated version. It is available (very cheaply) from the Liberty Fund Press in America. If you only want one copy, that is the only one to buy today.

My criticism is with the Great Minds Series edition of the book. The Great Minds Series is an abridged version. Huge chunks have been edited out of the book, yet nowhere do they let you know this before making the purchase. I bought this book specifically because I wanted to cite it, and I can't because the parts I wanted to quote have been edited out.Adam Smith's "Wealth of Nations" is a worthy book for any private library, but purchase an edition other than the one offered by the so-called "Great Minds Series."

Collier's classic is THE guide to direct response copywriting. Right now as I write this, there's a used copy online fo $1,009.95 One friend who's paid five figures to write sales letters says he wouldn't let his copy go for $10,000 if he couldn't get another. It's pretty remarkable that this book is back in print at such a reasonable price. If you intend to make money from your advertising, this is a key book to read, study and master.

This book is simply a tremendous bargain sinceit hasn't been re-published in many years. I have 2 copiesof the original 5th edition on my bookshelf because I neverwanted to lose one. If you study Collier's work you can crankout winning sales letters that bring in the cash anytime youlike.I still personally use many of his sales letters ideas inmy own Internet business day in and day out.

Malonson You may think that there is not alot you can learn to improve your marketing from a book that has its beginnings almost 70 years ago, and you would be wrong.Collier lived in a world where words mattered, and in fact (despite what you may think) they still matter.Words are the core essence of your marketing and sales messages, and in fact The Letter Book provides key insights into "Salesmanship In Print".* Gain your prospects attention.* Use facts to distinguish yourself from your competition.* Determine what makes you and your offering unique.* Focus on the prospects needs and desires, not your desire to sell.Direct marketing methods are sorely lacking in the curricula of modern business education, so it is in your interest to educate yourself. The Letter Book is a fantastic place to start.Cheers!

By Unlisted Disclosure: I received a review copy of this product. The Coldwood Codex for 5th edition is an excellent addition of monsters, not only for bringing up the number of available Fey and Undead, but also for being inventive, covering a spectrum of challenge ratings, and presenting everything through amazing illustrations. The monsters in the codex are truly creative, either drawing from lore and myth that have not been explored before, or inventing new concepts that are similarly innovative. From undead druids to dark fey lords, this book does a great job of presenting monsters that feel like monsters; evil and motivated to get in the way of your players. They also benefit from a well developed grasp of the 5th edition system, making full use of the intricate monster creation rules while also presenting unique and interesting abilities that help them stand out even more.Ultimately, I would give this product 5 stars and my stamp of approval. You would be hard pressed not to want to include these monsters in your game, and even a slight reskinning could result in some memorable encounters over a wide range of challenge ratings. If this is the caliber of monster design for Legendary Games, I can only anticipate with eager wonder a more thorough bestiary down the line.

Good zombie story with a twist By Kikigirl Surprisingly good zombie novel.Cons: Despite having 3 authors, the novel is still rife with misused words and grammar. It seems that the authors were both lazy and tried to use words that they didn't know in order to elevate the novel. A basic read through for edit would have caught most of the mistakes. For example, tare was used throughout the book vs. tear. Tare is a weighing system vs. a rip which is what they were trying to say. The mistakes detracted a lot from the story.Pros: Don't expect any groundbreaking ideas about zombies. All the basic tropes are used but excellent story and twist. Good action. Well written with appropriate suspense.I gave this story a five star despite the mistakes because good storytelling deserve endorsement. The story started off with a request from the CDC for virologists at the USAMRID center to check on a long dormant biological weapon created by the US government. Apparently, the CDC annual audit saw that PT-12 has mutated and their antivirus would no longer work.In an ironic twist of fate, through human errors and arrogance, PT-12 was released and Raleigh was exposed to the biological agent. The government responses were typical of what we could expect from our government: spins, lies, fear, ruthlessness and incompetence. The government is a large network of very human people who follow order and are subject to their mistakes and foibles. The novel explored this trajectory well as it follows the Army's response. On a parallel path, we are also introduced to two strangers on a train heading to Raleigh. One of them is a mentally disturbed young man, Richard. He's dependent upon his medication in order retain his grasp on reality. Unfortunately, Richard lost his medication during his rescue from the train. Most of the novel follows Richard as he struggles through an exploding zombie apocalypse to rescue his brother from the Butner Federal Penitentiary. His world is a confusing one as he fought with the voices in head while stumbling through the wreck of Raleigh. The Army in the meantime is trying to find him as he may provide a cure through his immunity. Will Richard reach his brother in time? Is he truly immune? The journey is an enjoyable one as we find out.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. unusual main character By Danielle ATZ As a huge fan of zombie "literature", i am always looking for something that is different from the usual, whether its a different take on how the virus started, or unusual abilities that the zombies posess. This book has a mentally ill main character that is off his meds that hears voices in his head, trying to rescue his brother from prison, instead of the tough guy with knowledge of all kinds of survival tactics that most other books have. Its very well written, & pulls you in from the first pages. I dont want to spoil anything , but the ending will blow your mind! I recommend this to anyone.

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. A highly creative zombie tale By Kitty Smith An action packed story with a continually twisting plot, Degeneration is an intense, exciting new spin on a genre that has been done practically to death by lesser storytellers. The attention to accurate detail with regards to the medical aspects of the story was impressive. I liked seeing how the events unfolded, as opposed to the usual stories where you come in after the zombies are already running amok and no one really knows how they came into being. The atypical hero character of Richard was also a welcome surprise.Overall I found Degeneration to be a fantastically narrated, highly creative post-apocalyptic zombie tale that was both exciting and well plotted out. Since my copy was pretty much free from grammatical and editing issues I'm going to say that the problems that seemed to plague it upon it's initial release have since been corrected.

McQuary Because it is so recent, this is a really perfect book to get for your trip to Iceland. i went in the winter, and this told me things that were absolutely vital to my staying there. Little cultural things, as well as newer attractions that have only opened up in the past few years. It was my indispensable guide, and I'm giving it to some friends who are going in a few months. Better than anything else out there because of how recent it is. Great map included, too.

Voltaire's Candide is political satire that has endured for centuries. Required reading in many high school AP courses and college English courses, Candide tells the story of a starry-eyed young man who struggles to reunite with his lost love. Eschewing mysitcal optimism for a more philosophy, Candide and his companions finally retire together, embracing a simple life on a small farm. Particularity of this edition: - Complete work: all the 30 chapters of the story - A table of contents - Annotations from wikipedia.

Candide (Inti Classics): by Voltaire, by Voltaire

Amazon.com Review Political satire doesn't age well, but occasionally a diatribe contains enough art and universal mirth to survive long after its timeliness has passed. Candide is such a book. Penned by that Renaissance man of the Enlightenment, Voltaire, Candide is steeped in the political and philosophical controversies of the 1750s. But for the general reader, the novel's driving principle is clear enough: the idea (endemic in Voltaire's day) that we live in the best of all possible worlds, and apparent folly, misery and strife are actually harbingers of a greater good we cannot perceive, is hogwash.

Telling the tale of the good-natured but star-crossed Candide (think Mr. Magoo armed with deadly force), as he travels the world struggling to be reunited with his love, Lady Cunegonde, the novel smashes such ill-conceived optimism to splinters. Candide's tutor, Dr. Pangloss, is steadfast in his philosophical good cheer, in the face of more and more fantastic misfortune; Candide's other companions always supply good sense in the nick of time. Still, as he demolishes optimism, Voltaire pays tribute to human resilience, and in doing so gives the book a pleasant indomitability common to farce. Says one character, a princess turned one-buttocked hag by unkind Fate: "I have wanted to kill myself a hundred times, but somehow I am still in love with life. This ridiculous weakness is perhaps one of our most melancholy propensities; for is there anything more stupid than to be eager to go on carrying a burden which one would gladly throw away, to loathe one's very being and yet to hold it fast, to fondle the snake that devours us until it has eaten our hearts away?"--Michael Gerber

Review Satirical novel published in 1759 that is the best-known work by Voltaire. It is a savage denunciation of metaphysical optimism--as espoused by the German philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz--that reveals a world of horrors and folly. In this philosophical fantasy, naive Candide sees and suffers such misfortune that he ultimately rejects the philosophy of his tutor Doctor Pangloss, who claims that "all is for the best in this best of all possible worlds." Candide and his companions--Pangloss, his beloved Cunegonde, and his servant Cacambo--display an instinct for survival that provides them hope in an otherwise somber setting. When they all retire together to a simple life on a small farm, they discover that the secret of happiness is "to cultivate one's garden," a practical philosophy that excludes excessive idealism and nebulous metaphysics. -- The Merriam-Webster Encylopedia of Literature

208 of 220 people found the following review helpful. Delicious Irony Amidst Swift-Like Satire By Donald Mitchell Ever since philosophers began thinking about the meaning of life, a favorite question has been "Why do bad things happen to good people?". In Voltaire's day, this issue was primarily pursued either from the perspective of faith (everything that happens is God's will and must be for Divine purpose) or of reason (What do these events mean to you, as you interpret them subjectively?). Infuriated by the reaction by some members of the church to a horrible loss of life from an earthquake in Lisbon, Voltaire wrote this hard-biting satire of the human condition to explore these questions. Before reading further, let me share a word of caution. This book is filled with human atrocities of the most gruesome sort. Anything that you can imagine could occur in war, an Inquisition, or during piracy happens in this book. If you find such matters distressing (as many will, and more should), this book will be unpleasant reading. You should find another book to read. The book begins as Candide is raised in the household of a minor noble family in Westphalia, where he is educated by Dr. Pangloss, a student of metaphysical questions. Pangloss believes that this is the best of all possible worlds and deeply ingrains that view into his pupil. Candide is buoyed by that thought as he encounters many setbacks in the course of the book as he travels through many parts of Europe, Turkey, and South America. All is well for Candide until he falls in love with the Baron's daughter and is caught kissing her hand by the Baron. The Baron immediately kicks Candide out of the castle (literally on the backside), and Candide's wanderings begin. Think of this as being like expulsion from the Garden of Eden for Adam. Soon the penniless Candide finds himself in the Bulgarian army, and receiving lots of beatings while he learns to drill. The story grows more far-fetched with each subsequent incident. To the casual reader, this exaggeration can seem unnecessary and annoying. It will remind you of the most extreme parts of Swift in Gulliver's Travels and Rabelais in Gargantua and Pantagruel. But subtly, Voltaire is using the exaggeration to lure the reader into making complacent judgments about complacency itself that Voltaire wants to challenge. The result is a deliciously ironical work that undermines complacency at a more fundamental level than I have seen done elsewhere. Basically, Candide challenges any view you have about complacency that is defined in terms of the world-view of those who are complacent.Significant changes of circumstances (good and ill) occur to all of the members of the Baron's household over the course of the story. Throughout, there is much comparing of who has had the worst luck, with much feeling sorry for oneself. That is the surface story. Voltaire is, however, a master of misdirection. Beneath the surface, Voltaire has another purpose for the book. He also wants to expose the reader to questioning the many bad habits that people have that make matters worse for everyone. The major themes of these undercurrents are (1) competing rather than to cooperating, (2) employing inhumane means to accomplish worldly (and many spiritual) ends, (3) following expected rules of behavior to show one's superiority over others that harm and degrade others, (4) focusing on money and power rather than creating rich human relationships, (5) hypocritical behavior, and (6) pursuing ends that society approves of rather than ends that please oneself.By the end of the story, the focus shifts again to a totally different question: How can humans achieve happiness? Then, you have to reassess what you thought about the book and what was going on in Voltaire's story. Many readers will choose to reread the book to better capture Voltaire's perspective on that final question, having been surprised by it.Candide is one of my favorite books because it treats important philosophical questions in such an unusual way. Such unaccustomed matching of treatment and subject matters leaves an indelible impression that normal philosophical arguments can never match. Voltaire also has an amazing imagination. Few could concoct such a story (even by using illegal substances to stimulate the subconscious mind). I constantly find myself wondering what he will come up with next. The story is so absurd that it penetrates the consciousness at a very fundamental level, almost like doing improvisation. In so doing, Voltaire taps into that feeling of "what else can happen?" that overcomes us when we are at our most pessimistic. So, gradually you will find yourself identifying with the story -- even though nothing like this could ever happen to you. Like a good horror story, you are also relieved that you can read about others' troubles and can put your own into perspective. This last point is the fundamental humanity of the story. You see what a wonderful thing a kind word, a meal, or a helping hand can be. That will probably inspire you to offer those empathic actions more often. After you have finished Candide, I suggest that you ask yourself where complacency about your life and circumstances is costing you and those you care about the potential for more health, happiness, peace, and prosperity. Then take Voltaire's solution, and look around you for those who enjoy the most of those four wonderful attributes. What do those people think and do differently from you?

Some Candides Are Better Than Others By Bucherwurm No the story doesn't change from edition to edition, but the supplementary material provided does change. Candide isn't just some hectic adventure story. It really fails as literature in this regard, and certainly Voltaire's purpose was not to make you chuckle while you whiled away a few empty hours. He would weep to think that you missed out on what he was really trying to tell you. Rest easy. I am not going to launch into a stuffy monologue on Leibnitz and 18th century French Catholicism, but in essence you should know that this is the essence of the story. The philosopher Leibnitz (who with Isaac Newton independently invented Calculus) explained the existence of evil in the world thusly: God, in his infinite wisdom, thought of all possible worlds that he could create, and he chose this one; therefore this must be the best of all possible worlds. Voltaire was also continually chastising the Catholic Church for it's lack of tolerance of other beliefs, and for its aristocratic pomp.Enter now the Norton Critical Edition of Candide. This book presents the 75 page story along with 130 additional pages of various articles and essays on the times in which it was written; commentary by Voltaire and by his contemporaries; and critiques of the story by modern writers. Sure there are always a few dull, academic essays making their mandatory appearance in a book like this, but my suggestion is just to skip them. After all there are a lot of them to choose from.Learn the story behind the story so to speak. After all it is the background of Candide that makes Candide the forceful satire that it is.

By A Customer It is probably fair to say that there is no book that is quite like Voltaire's 'Candide'. This is a venomous satire of the 'Optimistic' philosophy and outlook of enlightenment thinkers such as Leibniz and Alexander Pope. As such, it is served well by the unique combination of repeated brutality and a deft, light touch. If that last comment doesn't make sense, then you'll just have to READ THE BOOK.At a mere 144 pages (in this edition), this is a classic that is a breeze to read. As to the charge that this book is too "violent" or "in bad taste", I would only ask you to remember that Voltaire was furious that learned members of a "civilized" society (like Leibniz, Pope, and even Rousseau)could claim that the apparent senseless violence and mayhem wrought by disasters, war, disease, man's cruelty, etc. was actually only a part of some 'greater good' - after all, God (being perfect) could not 'logically' created anything but the 'best of all possible' universes.Voltaire's touch is so light and understated that I defy anyone to write anything that contains a third of the violence in 'Candide' and still manages to read as breezily and somehow be genuinely funny. But dark satire must be funny - otherwise it lapses into pedantry.Read it - even if you do not like it, I guarantee you that it will disturb you and make you think. And for that, we can thank Voltaire.

English summary: In every group of children there are a few who provoke their caretakers more than others with their great need for movement, with aggression or with isolation behaviour. But how can such children be integrated in nursery school routines? And how can one create the means to allow these children to develop properly without being overwhelmed by the task? The author first describes the various syndromes of children with conspicuous aggressive behaviour, ADHD and Asperger, and then the surroundings necessary for fostering such children. She provides concrete and practical solutions for dealing with such behaviour. Such methods help not only the child in question; an active, concept-driven pedagogical approach will also reduce the work stress of the caretakers who can continue to be successful and enjoy their work.

In this clever picture book, six different shapes attend Shapeston Elementary School along with the children: Triangle, Square, Circle, Rectangle, Rhombus (or ?Diamond? to her friends) and Oval. As the story begins, the big news at school is the upcoming play. Everyone is looking forward to auditioning, especially the shapes. One by one they are introduced, with descriptions of their unique personalities and interests, along with the roles they've played before (Triangle as a tortilla chip, Oval as a skating rink, Diamond as a kite and the like). Happily, after all the wonderful auditions, the drama teacher decides everyone gets to be in the play! This fresh and playful idea for a concept book, written and illustrated by Tania Howells, makes shapes and early geometry fun. Each shape gets its own two-page spread. On the left is a large picture of the shape, with a simple and expressive face and limbs set in a jaunty pose, along with the explanatory text. On the right are boxes containing smaller illustrations of objects made out of the shape. The art, simply drawn in bright, bold colors, is charming and engaging. These spreads could easily work on their own for a lesson on shapes, and the book could be used to spark a variety of ?I spy? activities with young children, in the classroom, in the playground or anywhere out in the world. Also, the ending spread showing the play's performance offers a terrific opportunity to search for the different shapes on the stage.

Starring Shapes!, by Tania Howells

From School Library Journal PreS-Gr 1—Personified shapes and children alike attend Shapeton Elementary School and they are excited about auditions for the upcoming school play Hansel and Gretel. Luckily, this play includes parts for everyone! Each shape (triangle, square, circle, rectangle, rhombus, and oval) is introduced to readers on a spread. One page illustrates the shape in various objects such as kites and baseball fields, while the other describes the different things a shape can be. For instance, "Diamond soars high as a kite, finds her perfect fit in puzzles and dazzles in patterns." The language is a bit confusing at times, as Howells breaks the fourth wall and speaks directly to readers. "Square is a swell guy to be around—but you probably knew that already!" This happens throughout different shape introductions, but not in all of them, and makes the text feel choppy and unrefined. While the childlike Photoshop illustrations are bright and clear, the wavy lines make the book feel rushed and do not work with the text. VERDICT While the Shapeton Elementary's play is a big hit, this picture book misses its mark.—Brooke Newberry, La Crosse Public Library, WI

Cute book better suited for K-1 By Sunshine on a Rainy Day SUMMARY: The shapes at Shapeston Elementary School are very excited about the upcoming auditions for the school play. The story lists many of the roles each shape has played in the past such as the triangle as a flag and the square as a postage stamp. Everyone gets a part in the play and they all get a chance to be a star.ILLUSTRATIONS: The illustrations were digitally rendered. They are very colorful and cute, but have an underdeveloped feel.THE GOOD: The concept as a whole was good. The shapes are getting ready to audition and are explaining their previous experience in different roles. Many of th pictures are appealing to the youngest crowd.THE NOT AS GOOD: The paragraphs explaining each shape's roles are far too long for preschool age. It would have been better to break the paragraphs up and put short sentences under the pictures of the different roles of each shape. This would require a different and more pleasing layout. Some of the vocabulary was also too mature for preschoolers. On one page, there is even a combination of verb tenses in the same paragraph. Ouch!AGE RECOMMENDATION: K-1NOTE: I was given a free ARC copy from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All of my reviews are 100% honest based on preset criteria.

A Cute Shape Book with a Story By Grateful Grandma In this cute picture book, Shapeston Elementary School is hosting a play and all the students want to audition for a part, especially the Shapes. Each shape gets an opportunity in the book to tell about its attributes accompanied by a set of pictures showing them in a particular "role". Of course, all the students and shapes get an opportunity to appear in the play. As the book is read, children will get a chance to see the various shapes as they are used and seen regularly. The illustrations are bright, colourful and very kid-friendly. The shapes highlighted are triangle, square, circle, rectangle, rhombus and oval. An educational book that is fun for children. A definite to use in a Math class while learning about shapes.Lots of follow up opportunities after the story is read. Thanks to Netgalley and Kids Can Press for the opportunity to read and review this book.

By Lance Leighnor Jessica Keller is quickly becoming one of my favorite space heroines - right up there with Honor Harrington and Kris Longknife. This book has a little bit of everything - backroom dirty politics, space action and fighting against near impossible odds. I've enjoyed these stories they've developed and they're an easy enjoyable read. One somewhat valid criticism of David Weber is that the details at times overwhelm the story, which doesn't happen here. There's just enough detail for you to know how the universe is ordered and more in moving the plot along. In this story, Jessica is back for another tiff with the Red Admiral and he's coming loaded for bear. As usual, Jessica is horribly out-gunned but also as usual, she has a whole lot of mischief on her side. Yeoman Kermode is on center stage in this book and gets a bit of growing up as well. The fight takes place at Ballard which ties together "The Story Road" with Jessica's chronicles. This time Jessica is fighting to protect Suvi, the last of the immortal AI's (hence the title) that the Red Admiral has come to exterminate. And by the way, he wants Jessica's head too - seems he's a bit upset at being played twice now.I've enjoyed all three of these books and look forward to where Blaze Ward takes the story next.

White I just love this series and would love for it to continue. Who do I like most? Hard to tell but Moirrey sure tops the list most of the time. This book is tight and well written. The characters are well developed and the battle scenes are terrific It is hard to say great things about the book without giving something away so just understand that this book is well worth your money and your time.

Haeckler MacDonald wrote this over a century ago, and the language is hard on under-educated kids, but the adventure, the unexpected twists in the plot, and the moral lessons make this one of my absolute favorite books, even if the language is a bit hard to get through.MacDonald's adventure fantasy stories were the inspiration for Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, and his daughter was even the inspiration for "Alice in Wonderland" - an impressive bit of literary history to take in!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. another great book from GM By classiclover I love all of George Macdonald's books, including the unspoken sermons. This book tells a story about a boy named Clare. How I grew to love him as I read along. He seems to be the model of what the Lord is referring to when He says that we must become like little children to enter the kingdom of God. I was so moved and challenged. I also like the spiritual insights and truths the author put in throughout the story. I'll miss the animals --Nimrod, Abdiel, Pummy, and Panther.

It is a comfort to read something written in a good style. This is a book suitable for children with some potent messages for adults as well. After an unsure start, eventually I read it twice!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This is something intensely recommend! It's gonna be a wild ride By Brandon Oh my god, this book. This book, oh my god. Oh my god, this book.Chances are, if you're looking at this listing, you've either already read the other three books in this series (The Immortal Coil, Shadows of Humanity, and Gospel of the Forgotten), or are interested in doing so. This is something intensely recommend! It's gonna be a wild ride, but you're going to love it every step of the way, I can promise you that! The introduction, and inclusion, of some "real" gods was an absolute treat, and a new relationship between certain someones is going to have you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails down to nubs, reading all throughout the night, but leaving you euphoric right up til the very end of the book!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A gripping new installment in the Immortal Coil series By Kele Kravelin The fourth installment in the Immortal Coil series, and also the largest one to date. J. Armand has again surpassed his earlier works and created a book that while over twice as long as the earlier books in the series feels too short as it's very absorbing. It has been a long time since I've read a book where I had sacrificed sleep just to keep reading because I really had to know what happens next. While there's no massive change in his writing style, there are subtle improvements and an overall feel that he's more comfortable in the alternate Earth he's created for Dorian and the other supernatural beings that inhabit it. There's an addition of another major player in this book, in this case another organization, as well as some other important characters including the first appearances of gods in the story. The gradual building of the world and how it works across the books has been a good pacing that doesn't overwrite, and instead enhances, the story with a ton of exposition.Things are detailed as much as needed and when appropriate rather than dumping chapters of backstory on us that do nothing to progress the narrative, a flaw in many sci-fi and fantasy books, shows, and movies. The reader learns about the non-mundane side of the world at the same time and to the same degree as Dorian, the protagonist and from whom's perspective the stories are all written in. This is what drives the story and makes it so enthralling. When Dorian first encounters a new player in the supernatural or even mundane side of things it's truly a revelation and not only gives the reader a new glimpse into the world but can also change the assumptions that we've developed from the previous information given.J. Armand also doesn't shy away from some unpleasant topics. in each book there's been some topics that are unpleasant and exist in the real world. These topics are often glossed over, or ignored, in stories and even reality. Instead of shying away from them he's put them there and in a way that flows with the story. He doesn't make big, preachy monologues about these topics but the characters respond to them much in the way people do in our world, with degrees of outrage to ignoring what is going on. This time though he confronts something that could warrant a trigger warning and he handles it very head on, in the way that Dorian reacts and deals with the topic. To avoid spoilers I won't mention the topic, but be warned that in the story it's confronted head-on without any sort of phrasing to minimize or dismiss the nature and severity of the topic while also not using any shock terminology or explicit details that would only server to sensationalize the events. He has found a good balance in his narrative to evoke the feelings the events should have without sensory overload.Dorian, Noah, and other central characters have grown as well in this book. J. Armand has not falling into the trap of having static characters that never change or adapt to their situation and the major events that shape their lives. Instead the characters do change as events happen to them, sometimes very reluctantly. The core of the characters stays true though so when their outlooks and behaviors do shift it's a natural and organic change and doesn't come across as being out-of-character and done just to drive a plot point. Some revelations seem more shocking then others but they still make sense as they are not Dorian and our window into the world is entirely through his eyes and his knowledge. The only glimpses into the motivations of the characters other than Dorian we get is by what they reveal to him or what he suspects based on his interactions with them. Just as in real life, a person can totally surprise us when our assumptions about them are wrong. At the end of the book I was again left wanting to know what happens next. There was battles fought in the book and while some where won and others lost, the war has barely begun. Dorian and the reader are just starting to get a real idea of the full impact of the coming apocalypse and just how much the world is going to change. There is no averting the war, and win or lose the world will be changed forever. This has made it a much more enjoyable read for me when most stories set in a magic-infused modern Earth setting keep magic to the shadows and the heroes find a way to stop things without the rest of the world learning any of the truth. The events in New York from the first book may have been able to be swept under the carpet but what unfolds in this installment of the series can't, and it firmly shifts us from the Earth we know into the one that J. Armand has created.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. best yet By chris tonga I loved the first three but this one was beyond good. Intense action as well as alot of character progression, especially my favorite one, Noah. I liked that it was more fantasy focused with the arrival of a new faction. An excellent story and iIcan't wait for more.
