Good zombie story with a twist By Kikigirl Surprisingly good zombie novel.Cons: Despite having 3 authors, the novel is still rife with misused words and grammar. It seems that the authors were both lazy and tried to use words that they didn't know in order to elevate the novel. A basic read through for edit would have caught most of the mistakes. For example, tare was used throughout the book vs. tear. Tare is a weighing system vs. a rip which is what they were trying to say. The mistakes detracted a lot from the story.Pros: Don't expect any groundbreaking ideas about zombies. All the basic tropes are used but excellent story and twist. Good action. Well written with appropriate suspense.I gave this story a five star despite the mistakes because good storytelling deserve endorsement. The story started off with a request from the CDC for virologists at the USAMRID center to check on a long dormant biological weapon created by the US government. Apparently, the CDC annual audit saw that PT-12 has mutated and their antivirus would no longer work.In an ironic twist of fate, through human errors and arrogance, PT-12 was released and Raleigh was exposed to the biological agent. The government responses were typical of what we could expect from our government: spins, lies, fear, ruthlessness and incompetence. The government is a large network of very human people who follow order and are subject to their mistakes and foibles. The novel explored this trajectory well as it follows the Army's response. On a parallel path, we are also introduced to two strangers on a train heading to Raleigh. One of them is a mentally disturbed young man, Richard. He's dependent upon his medication in order retain his grasp on reality. Unfortunately, Richard lost his medication during his rescue from the train. Most of the novel follows Richard as he struggles through an exploding zombie apocalypse to rescue his brother from the Butner Federal Penitentiary. His world is a confusing one as he fought with the voices in head while stumbling through the wreck of Raleigh. The Army in the meantime is trying to find him as he may provide a cure through his immunity. Will Richard reach his brother in time? Is he truly immune? The journey is an enjoyable one as we find out.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. unusual main character By Danielle ATZ As a huge fan of zombie "literature", i am always looking for something that is different from the usual, whether its a different take on how the virus started, or unusual abilities that the zombies posess. This book has a mentally ill main character that is off his meds that hears voices in his head, trying to rescue his brother from prison, instead of the tough guy with knowledge of all kinds of survival tactics that most other books have. Its very well written, & pulls you in from the first pages. I dont want to spoil anything , but the ending will blow your mind! I recommend this to anyone.

A highly creative zombie tale By Kitty Smith An action packed story with a continually twisting plot, Degeneration is an intense, exciting new spin on a genre that has been done practically to death by lesser storytellers. The attention to accurate detail with regards to the medical aspects of the story was impressive. I liked seeing how the events unfolded, as opposed to the usual stories where you come in after the zombies are already running amok and no one really knows how they came into being. The atypical hero character of Richard was also a welcome surprise.Overall I found Degeneration to be a fantastically narrated, highly creative post-apocalyptic zombie tale that was both exciting and well plotted out. Since my copy was pretty much free from grammatical and editing issues I'm going to say that the problems that seemed to plague it upon it's initial release have since been corrected.
