The visceral curtain of chaos has been lifted from Earth upon the defeat of Demon Lord Ma’al. Dorian Benoit and his allies may have thwarted the Infernal uprising for now, but no one survives an encounter with Hell unscathed. The war has already begun to take its toll on some, while others have had their eyes opened by the trials set before them. Maddening desperation can take hold of even the most resolute mind in times of unrest when ideals are challenged and friendships tested. New allegiances will form where others fall, and old enemies may find themselves fighting on the same side for better or for worse.

Oh my god, this book.Chances are, if you're looking at this listing, you've either already read the other three books in this series (The Immortal Coil, Shadows of Humanity, and Gospel of the Forgotten), or are interested in doing so. This is something intensely recommend! It's gonna be a wild ride, but you're going to love it every step of the way, I can promise you that! The introduction, and inclusion, of some "real" gods was an absolute treat, and a new relationship between certain someones is going to have you on the edge of your seat, biting your nails down to nubs, reading all throughout the night, but leaving you euphoric right up til the very end of the book!

A gripping new installment in the Immortal Coil series By Kele Kravelin The fourth installment in the Immortal Coil series, and also the largest one to date. J. Armand has again surpassed his earlier works and created a book that while over twice as long as the earlier books in the series feels too short as it's very absorbing. It has been a long time since I've read a book where I had sacrificed sleep just to keep reading because I really had to know what happens next. While there's no massive change in his writing style, there are subtle improvements and an overall feel that he's more comfortable in the alternate Earth he's created for Dorian and the other supernatural beings that inhabit it. There's an addition of another major player in this book, in this case another organization, as well as some other important characters including the first appearances of gods in the story. The gradual building of the world and how it works across the books has been a good pacing that doesn't overwrite, and instead enhances, the story with a ton of exposition.Things are detailed as much as needed and when appropriate rather than dumping chapters of backstory on us that do nothing to progress the narrative, a flaw in many sci-fi and fantasy books, shows, and movies. The reader learns about the non-mundane side of the world at the same time and to the same degree as Dorian, the protagonist and from whom's perspective the stories are all written in. This is what drives the story and makes it so enthralling. When Dorian first encounters a new player in the supernatural or even mundane side of things it's truly a revelation and not only gives the reader a new glimpse into the world but can also change the assumptions that we've developed from the previous information given.J. Armand also doesn't shy away from some unpleasant topics. in each book there's been some topics that are unpleasant and exist in the real world. These topics are often glossed over, or ignored, in stories and even reality. Instead of shying away from them he's put them there and in a way that flows with the story. He doesn't make big, preachy monologues about these topics but the characters respond to them much in the way people do in our world, with degrees of outrage to ignoring what is going on. This time though he confronts something that could warrant a trigger warning and he handles it very head on, in the way that Dorian reacts and deals with the topic. To avoid spoilers I won't mention the topic, but be warned that in the story it's confronted head-on without any sort of phrasing to minimize or dismiss the nature and severity of the topic while also not using any shock terminology or explicit details that would only server to sensationalize the events. He has found a good balance in his narrative to evoke the feelings the events should have without sensory overload.Dorian, Noah, and other central characters have grown as well in this book. J. Armand has not falling into the trap of having static characters that never change or adapt to their situation and the major events that shape their lives. Instead the characters do change as events happen to them, sometimes very reluctantly. The core of the characters stays true though so when their outlooks and behaviors do shift it's a natural and organic change and doesn't come across as being out-of-character and done just to drive a plot point. Some revelations seem more shocking then others but they still make sense as they are not Dorian and our window into the world is entirely through his eyes and his knowledge. The only glimpses into the motivations of the characters other than Dorian we get is by what they reveal to him or what he suspects based on his interactions with them. Just as in real life, a person can totally surprise us when our assumptions about them are wrong. At the end of the book I was again left wanting to know what happens next. There was battles fought in the book and while some where won and others lost, the war has barely begun. Dorian and the reader are just starting to get a real idea of the full impact of the coming apocalypse and just how much the world is going to change. There is no averting the war, and win or lose the world will be changed forever. This has made it a much more enjoyable read for me when most stories set in a magic-infused modern Earth setting keep magic to the shadows and the heroes find a way to stop things without the rest of the world learning any of the truth. The events in New York from the first book may have been able to be swept under the carpet but what unfolds in this installment of the series can't, and it firmly shifts us from the Earth we know into the one that J. Armand has created.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. best yet By chris tonga I loved the first three but this one was beyond good. Intense action as well as alot of character progression, especially my favorite one, Noah. I liked that it was more fantasy focused with the arrival of a new faction. An excellent story and iIcan't wait for more.
