Review Fallen is the first in a series of books written under the title of Allies and Enemies. It is the story of Commander Sela Tyron, who was born and bred solely to become the commander of the regime. She is no ordinary woman as the book describes her "as subtle as a hammer". To her, every problem, however big or small it maybe, is like a nail. And the only thing fit to be done to a nail is to hammer it; and Tyron follows just this ideology while she solves her problems. Although this simplistic and straight forward approach of solving problems does not remain as simple when she is faced with problems more complicated than the ones she is used to. All at the same time, she falls in love with a man who is visibly off-limits considering her position, comes across her son who was forbidden to her long ago and is left alone with her team on an unfamiliar planet inhabited by insurrectionists, who clearly pose an existential threat to her entire team. It is here that the story takes unexpected turns as Sela channelizes her problem solving skills in the face of a more complicated-than-usual situation. This book will definitely fixate the attention of fantasy, action and military science fiction readers who admire strong and deep characters set out on solving vexing crises. Allies and Enemies gives the reader an insightful look into the lives of people on the top that are put on such a high pedestal of purity and perfection that they are expected to let go of the very human needs and desires; justified in themselves but condemned to those at the top. About the Author Amy J. Murphy is the indie author and creator of the science fiction action adventure series, Allies and Enemies. The shady underworld of the grade school essay black market was indie author Amy J. Murphy's introduction to the possibility of writing things for money. Although real life intervened and her career path took a separate (and more honest) direction from this gig, she continued to work on personal writing projects until launching the Allies and Enemies series in 2015. By Lisa Dell Vandever I mention 'surprisingly good' because as a veteran I prefer more realistic and accurate military language and culture. As a female veteran, I seek out military female veteran sci-fi writers, which is a very small community. So, when I ran out of veteran female writers, I started searching for 'civilian' female sci-fi writers.I came across this book and thought I would give it a try. I enjoyed getting to know Sela Tyron and could relate to her discomfort when detached from her military life. Her struggle with duty and need for choice was another theme that resonated with me on multiple levels. So, while Ms. Murphy is not a veteran and has little inside military knowledge, from what I can tell, she is able to capture the essence of a female soldier's life and struggles. The book is very fast-paced and the characters are "perfectly imperfect" in all the right ways. I recommend this book and look forward to reading the next in the series, hopefully soon. So, if you are looking for a good military sci-fi novel, with a strong female lead and without the typical over-sexualized fantasy I find with SOME male writers, definitely give this book a try.

Suspenseful Military SF with strong complex characters By Jeff I was new to Military Science Fiction prior to my delving into Allies and Enemies: Fallen and like an adventure you look back fondly on, I found myself do exactly that days after finishing. The opening chapters fling you into the action and I found my uninitiated self trying to keep my head above water with the new names, lingo and lore. But as in most cases when you're dropped into the action, I was able to find my footing and acclimate as the opening sequence wound down and I could catch my breath. This now gave me the opportunity to take in my surroundings and get some good, hard looks at the characters in Amy J Murphy's debut novel.Complex and engaging, Sela Tyron is all the badass you want her to be with the vulnerabilities that endear her to you. I found myself very drawn to these cold military troops that are actually not that cold at all. Like many leading women, they exhibit a strong exterior and push others away lest they expose the demons hiding inside. Murphy masterfully weaves you through the chinks in Tyron's armor plating and exposes the real emotions beneath. What you find there makes Sela unique among leading heroines. In addition to well-developed characters, the lore supporting the story is well-conceived, plump and juicy with details I hope she explores more deeply in future novels in the series. It is very apparent that much thought and planning went into this lore. It is consistent and believable, its ethos both alien and not. While the novel was a little longer than expected, at 367 pages, it wasn't unnecessary. This book is detail-heavy and I enjoyed soaking up all of these details. While I don't know how many books are in store for this series, I do know that I will be patiently awaiting the next installment. Well done.

Allies and Enemies was well-plotted, had a fantastic setting and brilliantly vibrant characters. The setting was a rich tapestry of lore, tech and legend - the story of the Fates (near the beginning of the book) gives you an insight into the war between the Eugene peoples and the Sceeloid and why Humans were exterminated when found by the Eugene. The main characters, Commander Sela Tyron, Captain Jonvenlash Veradin and his sister Erelah Veradin literally jump from the pages and you can't help wanting things to work out for each. There is plenty of action, drama, romance, tragedy and mystery in this complex, layered story. A highly recommended read from new author Amy Murphy.
