The Image of Leadership is the result of Sylvie di Giusto's journey through two career paths: one in the field of human resources, the other as a professional image consultant. The title reflects the reality that true leadership manifests itself in ways that are both seen and unseen.
This book will take you step by step through the development of your professional imprint. The focus will be on all of those things that people perceive about you, with an emphasis on your appearance and your image. By all means, it's not a how-to book, because there simply is no one-size-fits-all formula for a look of leadership. Instead this book provides you with a deep understanding of the most important concepts to achieve your image of leadership. Because:
- You have to create your own professional imprint, which is true to your personality and which works for the duration of your long career.
- You have to appear confident, authentic, professional, and respectful to be perceived as a leader - no matter your height, weight, color, age, or gender.
- You have to look like a leader long before you are one.
- You have only seven seconds to create an imprint of leadership.
- You have to show people your leadership every day, consistently.
- You and only you can choose to present yourself as a leader or not.
This book is written to be entertaining for leaders at all levels. You'll encounter hard data drawn from Sylvie's research, and she shares countless stories from her 20 years of experience in corporations around the world while proving her theories with people who are currently in the public eye. There is no other book that encourages you to learn about your image from famous politicians, CEOs, and pop stars at the same time.

I generally skip many pages in self-help books because the writer thinks I need to listen to their sales patter. I already bought your book, isn't that enough? There is a gentle suggestion at the end of the book which doesn't make you feel the least bit annoyed. In fact I am considering the pitch....- Amazingly candid anecdotes from professional experience that will leave you either cringing or nodding your head in recognition of the point she's making.- Very specific recommendations about what to do. The chapters don't just leave a general guidance note. For instance, on bespoke tailoring she talks about exactly what matters in a tailored suit and how to deal with budgetary concerns etc.- It is probably the most widest in scope. It's not just your physicality that's the issue here. The writer discusses things such as media portrayals, social media use and confirmation bias. A very 21st century outlook.- The book covers research materials for each topic. I prefer it when I get presented with some data for claims made in books! What I didn't like (or what I thought was missing):- It lacks a contents page, with the chapter headings. It was particularly a problem for me because I bought the Kindle version, I guess. I prefer to be able to flip back and forth between chapters when I am reading non-fiction to keep track of points I think are aligned together.- It leaves it up to the reader to summarize an action plan. I feel like this could have been done relatively easily given how many practical suggestions are made in the book. But these are really nitpicky points. I think it was a pretty good read, packing in lots of valuable action points that I am trying to incorporate into my daily life.I outlined the chapters because I usually find that helps me a lot in deciding whether or not to buy a self-help book. However, in this instance, there are many subheadings within each chapter that breaks down to anecdotes and very specific action points, so it may not be exactly helpful.Chapter 1: The 7 second ruleChapter 2: Your professional imprintChapter 3: Leaders look confidentChapter 4: Leaders look authenticChapter 5: Leaders look professionalChapter 6: Leaders look respectfulChapter 7: Leaders look controlledChapter 8: The challenges of female and male leadersChapter 9: Leaders lead by exampleChapter 10: Moving forward

But I couldn’t because I wasn’t done with it. I’m still not. Oh, I have read it through but I am by no means finished with it. This is a book to be read and then re-read in small chunks, thought about and applied. The Image of Leadership by Sylvie DiGuisto is a full-on, practical, straightforward reference manual for anyone serious about being and being perceived as, a leader.Ms. DiGuisto doesn’t pull any punches in her opinions or advice…like the executive leaders she has advised. That by itself was refreshing. There are simply too many valuable points to even begin to try and list. I could mention +1/-1, or the various “challenges” she outlines (we all know them by their dress and behavior) or the appearance of your desk, car and yes, family.I think this book should be handed out to anyone who is entering the workforce, even in those industries regarded as “casual dress”. Perhaps especially for those in “casual dress” because you can really mess up in a casually dressed environment and completely undermine your leadership imprint. If you are unsure about whether you should buy this book or not think of it this way: what if the person you are competing with did buy and read it? Ignore this absolute gem at your career peril.

By Michael L Robertson I don't exactly have a shelf full of books on image and style. I'm an aging, overweight Texas guy who is lucky to show up with all my buttons buttoned and my hair somewhat combed. But once I met Sylvie di Giusto, I wanted to see what she had to say on the subject of image, because she's about the coolest-looking person I've ever met. To my delight, her book is not a mostly-for-women-but-here's-a-bit-for-the-men presentation, but an immensely readable, instantly applicable guide to making the most of your personal image...EVEN IF you're an aging, overweight guy.Sylvie names the names and tells the stories of people we all know about, and she points out with clarity what they get right and what they get wrong. It is jarring to know that a potential employer might pass on hiring you just because of your tie or your shoes, but that is a real possibility today. Sylvie's guidelines helped me to assess my wardrobe and see what items made the right impression and which ones just say, "I have given up on society."You'll enjoy this book; it's a quick read, but packed with useful insight and ideas that you can use right away, wrapped in fascinating personal stories. I loved it!
