About the Author Andrew Dickson White (1832-1918) did more than any other American to impress upon late nineteenth- and twentieth century thought the idea that science and religion are enemies locked in combat on an almost military scale. In 1849, he entered Geneva College and later enrolled in Yale. After graduating, White joined the University of Michigan as a lecturer in history. He returned to New York and won election to the state senate. Finally, White went on to become the first president and cofounder of Cornell University. He also is the author of books, including Seven Great Statesmen in the Warfare of Humanity with Unreason and a 1906 autobiography.

It is one of the best purchases I ever made. The sound advice, and the wonderful stories illustrating the value of thrift are so helpful, and I return to them again and again. The consumerist, material world that we live in makes it difficult to keep living a thrifty lifestyle. It seems that we are constantly swimming upstream in our efforts to live below our means in a society that does not value frugality, thrift, saving, or denying ourselves in any way. This book is a wise antidote to all the salespeople, the marketers, the advertising literally everywhere trying to entice you to spend your money rather than save it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in saving money, getting out of debt, and becoming a finer person.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Originally Published in 1875, But Reads Like Today By James East Though by Samuel Smiles published this book in 1875, much to my surprise it read very contemporary. Reading this book reminds me of Mark Twain in that 'History does not repeat, but it sure rhymes.' The struggles that folks had in England in the 1840s to 1870s sure ring true of human struggles of today. Other surprising takeaways is the author quotes like Benjamin Franklin and David Hume as acquaintances.Of course the thrust of the book is to abstain from debt like the plague, but it is more than that - it is a treatise on a way of life to avoid potentially struggles. Many folded ears on the pages of quotes, but a few as follows will give you a taste: "The secret of all success is to know how to deny yourself", "Disorderly persons are rarely rich; and orderly persons are rarely poor", "Give a man money without working for it, and he will soon claim it as a right." One can not have a book on thrift without tossing in a Cicero quote, "In the family, as in the State, the best source of wealth is Economy."I own an original 1875 copy, but would recommend this book for the larger type. It is also available on Kindle which I also own and is very good.
