Dryden: Selected Poems is drawn from Paul Hammond and David Hopkins's remarkable five-volume The Poems of John Dryden, and includes a generous selection of his most important work. The great satires, MacFlecknoe and Absalom and Achitophel, are included in full, as are his religious poemsReligio Laici and The Hind and the Panther, along with a number of Dryden's translations from Horace, Ovid, Homer, and Chaucer.

Each poem is accompanied by a headnote, which gives details of composition, publication, and reception. The first-rate annotations provide information on matters of interpretation and give details of allusions that might prove baffling to contemporary readers. Some 300 years after his death, Dryden: Selected Poems will enable new generations of readers to discover the poet of whom Eliot wrote: 'we cannot fully enjoy or rightly estimate a hundred years of English poetry unless we fully enjoy Dryden'.

Review

"Drydenian scholarship flourishes, and its crowning glories are the five volumes of the Poems edited by Paul Hammond and David Hopkins … [the footnotes} are a work of great editorial tact, and they not only satiate, but stimulate, one’s curiosity… The           generous paperback selection is therefore particularly welcome."

Matthew Reynolds, London Review of Books, July 2007

“This is an indispensable edition, providing just the resources for fuller understanding of a great genius."

Times Literary Supplement

'These volumes are enormous achievements, full of implication for our understanding of Dryden's poetry, and wonderful examples of the art of scholarly editing."

David Womersley, Notes and Queries.

“The Editorial matter is the best we have, or are likely to have for a long time”.

Claude Rawson, Review of English Studies

From the Back Cover

John Dryden (1631-1700) was the dominant literary figure of his age. His reputation today rests primarily on his poetic output, but he was also a significant literary critic and dramatist. His wide-ranging poetry engages with the turbulent political, religious, and literary life of Restoration England, and also includes a magnificent series of creative translations.  Dryden's influence in his lifetime and in the centuries that followed should not be underestimated and he remains one of the very greatest of the English poets.

Paul Hammond FBA is Professor of Seventeenth-Century English Literature at the University of Leeds. He has published widely on Dryden and other Restoration poets and is the author of, most recently, The Making of Restoration Poetry (2006). The elegance and wit of Dryden in its finest presentation By Michael Birman Elegance and wit are the hallmarks of two of my favorite poets: John Dryden and Alexander Pope. The 17th century Metaphysical Poets (Donne, Herbert, Marvell, Vaughn, Carew, Crashaw and Cowley) had left poetry with a complexity of utterance and an almost dizzying kaleidoscopic imagery. Some sort of reaction to their revolution against the previous Elizabethan generation of courtier and dramatic poets was inevitable. It was Dryden who fired the opening salvo by criticizing Donne for his difficulty and obscurity, asserting that he "affected the metaphysicals". Rejecting their inventive formal structures and eccentric wordplay, Dryden's poetry is lucid and straightforward, crisply adorned in heroic couplets that roll-off the tongue with ease. There is something warmly comforting in his poetic clarity after a bout with Donne or Marvell. That's not to say that he's a simplistic poet, he most definitely is not. Dryden engages his age directly and relishes communication with his readers. This Longman's Annotated Edition of Dryden's poetry is drawn from the five-volume complete edition and contains a fairly generous selection of his most important poems and translations. His great satires Mac Flecknoe and Absalom and Achitophel are here in their full versions as well as his religious poems Religio Laici and The Hind and the Panther. Dryden's hugely influential translations from Horace, Ovid, Homer and Chaucer are also included. Each of the poems is accompanied by an extensive headnote, superb preparation prior to reading a work. The annotation for each poem appears on the same page for easy reference and is exhaustive. Because so much of Dryden's poetry contains allusions to the events of his age, the information in this annotated edition simplifies interpretation and enhances the enjoyment of fully understanding the work of this great 17th century poet. I have several editions of Dryden's poetry in my collection but none approach this one for breadth of selection and depth of analysis. This is the single-volume Dryden edition to own for the broadest possible experience of this great 17th century poet.
