Every December, The Nutcracker comes to life in theaters all across the United States. But how did this 19th-century Russian ballet become such a big part of the holidays in 21st-century America? Meet William, Harold, and Lew Christensen, three small-town Utah boys who caught the ballet bug in the early 1900s. They performed on vaudeville and took part in the New York City dance scene. Russian immigrants shared the story of The Nutcracker with them, and during World War II, they staged their own Christmastime production in San Francisco. It was America's first full-length version and the beginning of a delightful holiday tradition.

From School Library Journal Gr 2–5—This well-researched history tells how three brothers from a small town in Utah came together to present the first full-length version of The Nutcracker in America. That performance on Christmas Eve, 1944, at the War Memorial Opera House in San Francisco started a holiday tradition that continues to this day in cities across the United States. Gendron's colorful illustrations capture the historical setting and the action and drama onstage and off. Back matter includes a time line with black-and-white photos, a summary of the story line, and suggestions for further reading. VERDICTA terrific choice for fans of The Nutcracker and all things ballet.—Virginia Walter UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies

By Janet Hamilton Summary: Although the Nutcracker ballet seems like a timeless holiday tradition, it’s only been around since the second half of the twentieth century. Three brothers from Utah, Willam, Harold, and Lew Christensen were responsible for bringing the Russian ballet to the U.S. The Christensens came from a dancing family and grew up to become dancers, vaudevillians, and eventually, teachers and producers. During World War II, money and dancers were both in short supply. The brothers were working in San Francisco and needed a hit to keep ballet alive in that city. When Willam heard someone whistling Tschaikovsky on a city street, he was reminded of a production of the Nutcracker he had been involved with years before. The brothers’ low-budget production premiered on Christmas Eve and was a huge hit. Over the next several years, the show spread to other cities across the country, so that by the 1960’s, the Nutcracker tradition had taken hold. Back matter includes notes from the author and illustrator about their research, a timeline, a summary of the story of the Nutrcracker, and suggestions for further reading. Grades 2-5.Pros: I was surprised to learn how recently the Nutcracker came to America. The history was interesting, and the illustrations, inspired by Edgar Degas, capture the grace and beauty of ballet. The conversational tone of the text keeps the story moving along.Cons: Some of the details of the brothers’ lives seemed extraneous to the main story. A little editing would have made this a better read-aloud for younger readers.

By Amaran Does any American child forget the wonder and magic of seeing The Nutcracker for the first time? I was five, and my older sister had taken me to the local university to see a live production. The music! The pageantry! The costumes! The lights! I was completely enthralled! I was in love! This was back in the day of phonographs, and as a follow-up Christmas present, my sister gave me the album and an accompanying book. Here I sit, decades late, and I can see every page of that book and hear every pop and skip of the album. And I've now had the joy of introducing my own two daughters to the Nutcracker and to ballet itself. Because of this love, I was eager to read The Nutcracker Comes to America. I enjoyed learning how these three brothers brought The Nutcracker to America. I've always been interested in vaudeville. The illustrations of the book were sweet and enchanting. I can't wait for my girls to unwrap this book for Christmas this year!

It's very informative while staying on a level that even young children can understand. I believe it would be particularly enjoyed with a viewing of The Nutcracker, but even without that, this is the type of book that can become a Christmas tradition to read for both children and adults alike. This review is unbiased and based upon a copy won through the Goodreads First Reads program.
