Trapped within the dead city of Marandur, Master Mechanic Mari and Mage Alain must escape both merciless barbarians and the pitiless Imperial Legion. Beyond those dangers lie the mightiest and most unforgiving powers in the world of Dematr: the Great Guilds that rule the world with iron fists.
Mari's Mechanics Guild and Alain's Mage Guild have always been enemies, but they are united in wanting to kill their rogue members before Mari can fulfill the ancient prophecy of being the one who will finally overthrow their power. Mari and Alain must risk those dangers because halfway across their world lies a place where truth has long been hidden. A place that could explain why their world's history begins abruptly, with no hints of what came before. A place where they might learn how the Mechanics Guild came to control all technology and how the Mages manage to alter reality temporarily. A place that might tell them how to achieve a task that appears to be impossible.
Never before have a Mage and a Mechanic worked together, and their combined talents offer their only hope. But she and Alain must first survive the deadly and implacable Assassins of Altis.

Lets say, in this one he really ratchets up the action, drama, and power to 11. The adventures in this new world have been enjoyable from book one, but book 3 really lays down some great moments. I can't recommend it enough. Everything is starting to really hit a good pace.In this book Mages, mechanics, and commoners alike rally to our heroes aid, and try to kill them. Split loyalties in all faction really help to ratchet the tension up a notch. The mysteries revealed in this book make it well worth the purchase and listen. The narrator does an okay job, he's not bad by any stretch of the imagination, his voices could use a little more refinement, but he delivers a solid performance that enhances the audio. My only wish is they'd give these books a little star Wars treatment and toss in some production FX.I whole heartedly give Jack Campbell's latest 5 enthusiastic stars. Well done sir.
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. but once it moves past that it is great. Easily the best in the series so far By Johnathon Part three in the series. Has a bit of out of plAce recap at the start, but once it moves past that it is great. Easily the best in the series so far. We finally get answers about the world that seem to open almost endless possibilities for the series.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. This series gets better and better By Mrs. Shiva I fell in love with this series at page 1 and it's only gotten better with each installment. The premise is interesting, the story moves quickly, the characters are totally likeable, three-dimensional and constantly evolving -- what else could a reader want? Books 2 and 3 have introduced some pretty interesting supporting characters who I can't wait to meet again, and the ante keeps getting higher with each pursuit and hair-raising escape. One of the things I really like about this series is while the society as a whole is teetering on the edge of chaos and ruin, it still functions. There are hints of the coming collapse, but there's an aura of hopefulness that collapse can be avoided -- if the heroes can succeed. I can hardly wait for book 4.
