23 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Very enjoyable epic fantasy By Steve D The Last Whisper of the Gods is a fine novel of epic fantasy. I can happily say that I was compelled to read it within a day, which is one of the highest compliments I can pay to a book. I've ready numerous other stories of this type that failed to grab me and lingered on my nightstand for months. I can also say I'm quite eager for the sequel to see how the story progresses from here.Of course, I had some minor quibbles. For a story who's entire premise is that the gods have left this world, we learn almost nothing about these gods and what their relationship with humanity used to be like. Had we learned something about an interesting pantheon of supernatural beings, their sudden loss might have been more interesting to the reader. There is a fair amount of R-rated language and situations which may bother some readers more than others. Personally, I didn't mind it other than it seemed just a bit gratuitous. Also, don't expect much in the way of humor. The characters are all pretty serious folks who don't seem to have any interest in joking around at all.Having said all that, the author does a lot of things well. The plot has just the right amount of suspense. Mysteries abound, but they don't feel drawn out unnecessarily. The world building (other than the curious lack of explaining the old theology) is quite excellent. Magic initially seems absent for this world, but the reader slowly learns with great interest that this may not be as it initially seems. The characters are presented well, and the reader gradually learns with great enjoyment why the more mysterious characters behave as they do. And while the novel ends on a satisfying note, it will be a rare reader who isn't enormously eager to learn what happens next.
10 of 12 people found the following review helpful. great fantasy world building By Michael Burnyeat Last Whisper of the Gods recalls the era of TOR published books from the 80's and 90's especially. It is, for an avid reader of those types of books myself, a pleasant surprise from many other fantasy titles that are released nowadays. It has a refreshingly unsentimental viewpoint to the world it creates. It feels like a real place, with all the grime and dirt and sweat that that would entail. The world building is more than competently handled- the kingdom's politics and backstabbing could come straight out of a Machiavellian text. Indeed much of the book feels more like a historical piece than a fantasy one. But the fantasy elements are there- boy are they!The basic premise of the book is that the gods have died- leaving a whole world in dismay. Of course it is not at first clear to the inhabitants of this world that the gods have indeed gone. But things start happening- crimes, conspiricies, and extreme changes in weather- that render even the most faithful to doubt.An interesting thing the author does is he parallels the story of the book's protagonist, a common stableboy Sorial, with the exploits of the ruler of the kingdom, Azarak. This contrast between the lowest and the highest serves to give the reader a more in depth look into the setting of the book- we see through both their eyes, and this helps give us a more complete picture of what's happening. It's clever writing.The book seems more aimed for adults but in terms of appropriateness for children, I would say it's good for 14 and up.There is some swearing, but nothing overboard, and the sexual content is treated with dry humoured euphemism for most.The character of Sorial differs from a standard fantasy protagonist in several aspects: he's not smart or talented or even a virgin. But he has some gritty everdayman qualities that make him rather likeable.My one gribe with this book is that it takes a while into it for the plot to really thicken- A third in and still not much had happened. Not that it ever got boring, but I think that some more excitement could've been placed earlier on to serve as a "hook" for readers.But still, this is a very good fantasy story, written with clean and concise prose- it's a pleasure to read.The author, Mr. Berardinelli, is a well-established film critic, with literally thousands of movie reviews on his website. It is a brave act for him to move from the person who gives criticism to the person who may possibly recieve it, but I believe he need not worry overly. There's really not much to criticize about Last Whisper of the Gods.

Camden Wow, so few reviews for such a great work.The 3 sentence summary goes like this: Follow young stable boy from youth to late teen years for more chapters than expected. Falls in love with noble girl for a lot of chapters. Turns out he's a "special one." Yadda, Yadda, Yadda. Really, you already half know the plot because of the genre. The good stuff (and what will persuade you to buy it) is in the telling of the tale, not the book report about it. So let's talk about that.Out of the gate let me get the weaknesses declared for those who only read that part before deciding to go through the rest of the review (I'm guilty there). This book only has two that I noticed. But both would probably be cured with a professional (industry experienced) editor.1 - The semi-regular use of the F word in conversation. I get why it's used. But it isn't required. It takes the book from PG to R when mixed with the occasional gratuitous sex scene. And no, I'm not a prude. Just thinking some of the younger crowd would probably dig this book too.2 - Typos or bad spellcheck suggestions. Sometimes a word is missing or the obviously wrong word is used in a sentence. It's not earth shattering and not rampant. Maybe a dozen times in all 450 pages. I've paid more for worse and been happy enough with it though.Yep, that's my whole list of low points about the book.As for the rest:I found this book when I was looking for something that brings me back to some of the fantasy books from my younger years (great, now I sound old). If you dig those older series where you spend what seems like forever in a story and just get lost in it then this is the one for you. You know the ones I'm talking about. Those epic 600 page monsters you spend the entire weekend reading because they just keep going and going with the good stuff. Yeah, this is one of those.I have to say that I'm actually a little surprised that this is just a trilogy. It reads like a 7-10 book (of the same epic size) series would. The size of the plot the author builds just has that kind of room to grow, and it seems natural to feel that the story would require that much room to be told properly. As much as I dislike being dragged along for 10 bucks a hit for that many books, this one would be worth it.I've been wondering for a while how to best describe the writing style. I suppose the closest I could think of would be Anthony Ryan's "Blood Song." The plot's aren't the same obviously. But their writing style could be called similar. You get description enough to draw a decent, but not overly detailed, picture of the backdrop but the plot is the focus. And it just keep going and going with a steady series of small struggles and triumphs or failures that lead to ever larger struggles. It's well executed and hard to put down once you get on the roller coaster.The main characters are pretty complex. They aren't exclusively evil or good. They all have individual motivations they seem to stick to unless something compelling comes along to change their perspective. Some change more than others. And they all seem to learn from mistakes as well. Everybody who has an accent or manner of speech actually seems to stick with it. And no modern words jumped out at me.The magic is believable and easy to understand, but is not dwelt on in book one (the rabbit hole goes deeper in book two).There are pistols, but thankfully are only one use weapons and rarely ever a story point. Swords and daggers are the tools of war and fighting.The gods' deaths were explained pretty well I thought. They got tired of being for eternity and decided to die. Doesn't really take rocket science to see the logic in it. The minutiae of religion doesn't have an impact on the story so was left out. I am grateful for that myself. The focus of the plot is on the here and (relatively recent) now with only small reliance on ancient history.It still got 5 stars with the two weakness I mentioned above because it totally owned me with a plot that made me remember how great the first few books of the Wheel of Time were. This is not that, but the tale is just as compelling. I genuinely devoured this one just as passionately as I did those. And I thought I was too jaded to feel that again after hundreds of fantasy books.
